The Mathis Pirates will invade
San Diego Friday night, hoping to
deal the Vaqueros their third con-
secutive defeat of the season and
break into the win column for the
first time themselves.
After close losses to seasoned
teams the first two weeks of the
season, Coach Mike Holbrook is
“still optimistic...because we’re still
in the ball games.”
It took a 25-yard touchdown run in
the last minute to give Riviera its 21-
13 margin last week. Opening weak,
it was a strong second half that kept
the Pirates in the game.
This week, according to Holbrook,
practice sessions will be devoted to
the running game, in hopes of balan-
cing the offensive attack.
The passing game has been a plea-
sant surprise from game one, com-
ing along much faster than ex-
pected. In fact, all four Pirate TDs
this season have been products of
the forward pass.
San Diego, winless last season and
1-9 in 1982, has several returning
starters with good credentials, in-
cluding two-year lettermen JJ Bar-
rera and Adrian Perez, at quarter-
back and fullback, respectively.
The Vaquero defense has been a
great source of their undoing this
year, with several two-way players,

Mathis came out playing strong
defense last Friday against the
Riviera Seahawks in the first half.
The Seahawks gave the Pirate of-
fense good field position on several
occasions, but the Pirate offense
was only able to capitalize one time.
The defense held Riviera on its first
couple of possessions and forced
them to punt. Then they recovered a
fumble on the Seahawk 40 yard line.
Mathis took advantage of this by

The Mathis Lady Pirates traveled
to the Riviera Volleyball Tourna-
ment Saturday and returned with a
second place trophy.
The Mathis team defeated Orange
Grove 15-2, 15-5 and Agua Dulce 15-
13,15-9 to reach the final game.
The Woodsboro Eaglettes put a
stop to the Mathis team 15-12, 15-10
to capture the tournament title.
Mathis Coach Rick Perry had the
following comments. “We didn’t
really play very well and it was very
disappointing not to win after
reaching the finals. We just didn’t
play with very much enthusiasm or
intensity.”
Mathis entered the tournament at
4-4 on the year with a district record
of 1-1. In district play Mathis
defeated Ingleside 15-11, 15-7 with

some strong spiking and serving.
Poor serving and inconsistent spik-
ing left the Lady Pirates on the short
end of a 9-15, 6-15 match against Sin-
ton. Mathis faces Taft and Aransas

taking the ball down to the one foot
line on a 16 yard pass to Frankie
Morales, but the Riviera defense
rose to the task and stopped Mathis
four times from the 1.
In the second quarter, the Pirate
defense continued their dominance
with fine play from Luis Flores, Joe
Leija, Rene Rodriguez, John
DeLeon, Erasmo Huerta and Arnold
Watts.
The Mathis offense then moved
the ball down to the Seahawk 37 yard
line on a 29 yard pass to Frankie
Morales, but stalled out at that
point. On 4th and 10, Mathis’ J.J.
Gonzales attempted a 42 yard field
goal but was barely off to the left.

fense hit Arnold Watts on the next
play for a 19 yard TD reception and
kicked the extra point for a 7-0
halftime lead.
After the second half kick off
lightning struck again when the
Seahawk runner scampered 62
yards for the tying touchdown. The
Pirates still could not generate any
consistant offense and had to punt
their next two possessions.
Meanwhile Riviera began to grind
out yardage wearing down the
Pirate defense. On the Seahawk
third possession of the second half
they went 32 yards and scored on a

Stay alert and stay clear—
AVOID POWER LINES
Putting up the antenna for your TV
set or for the base station of your
CB radio can be dangerous unless
you take certain precautions.
Plan the project carefully if you in-
stall the antenna yourself. First,
know where all the power lines
are—then stay well away from
them. Any contact between a
power line and you or your antenna
can be serious.
Make sure you locate your antenna
(including the supporting mast and
guy wires) at least one and a half
times its total height from all power
lines. For example, an antenna 30
feet high should be 45 feet away
from power lines in all directions.

A'
Don’t use a ladder near power
lines —during an antenna installa-
tion or while performing any other
task. The danger from using a
metal ladder is obvious. But a
wooden ladder can conduct elec-
tricity, too, if it’s damp or if it has
dirt or paint on it.
Electricity brings a more comfor-
table life to all of us, but it must be
treated cautiously. Stay alert—and
stay clear of power lines!
