been a hard week. After defeating
Orange Grove 15-3, 15-6, the J.V.
Lady Pirates were eliminated from
the tournament by Agua Dulce 6-15,
10-15. Earlier in the week Mathis lost
their opening district game to In-
gleside 15-13, 9-15, 1-15. They also
lost to Sinton 12-15, 2-15 to fall to 0-2
in district and 3-7 on the year. “We
still aren’t playing up to our
capabilities. We’re still losing to
teams we should be beating,” said
J.V. coach Barbara Garcia.

Roman, and Deborah Stewart. Mrs.
Darlene Laughridge is the team
mother.
Coaching the Goalbusters, ages 9-
12 years, are Mario Torres, Greg
Sanchez, and Donna Crow. Team
mother is Maggie Gonzales.
The games scheduled for Saturday
are as followed: Looseshoes verses
Gremlins at 11:40 until 12:40; Buc-
caneers verses Small Fries at 11:40
until 12:40 and Goalbusters verses
Cyclones at 12:20 until 1:40.
“If we can get over the hump,
hopefully things will fall into place.
We’re hoping we can gel (offensive-
ly) pretty soon,” adds Holbrook.
The probable starting 11 for the
Pirates on offense will be Arnold
Watts (180, Sr.) at tight end; Mario
Rosales (150, Sr.) and Jesse Gon-
zalez (170, Jr.) at tackles; Robert
Avalos (180, Sr.) and Fidel Flores
(150, Jr.) at guards, Johnny Paiz
(160, Sr.) at center, Tivo DeLeon
(130, Jr.) at split end, J.J. Gonzales
(150, Jr.) at quarterback, Warren
Rabb (160, Jr.) at fullback, Tony
Flores (150, Jr.) at wingback and
Pedro Moreno (150, Jr.) at running
back.
Defensively, the Mathis starters
will include linemen Jesse Coronado
(160, Sr.) at nose guard, John
DeLeon and Rene Rodriguez (160,
Sr.) at defensive ends, Erasmo
Huerta (160, Sr.) and Arnold Watts
at outside linebackers, Joe Leija
(160, Sr.) and Luis Flores (160, Jr.)
at inside linebackers, Mario Alonzo
(150, Sr.) and Tivo DeLeon at cor-
nerbacks, Ricky Espinoza (140, Sr.)
at strong safety and Andy Hicks
(150, Sr.) at free safety.

giving up 400 yards of total offense in
each of their first two games. In the
meantime, the offense has yet to find
the end zone.
Holbrook, acknowledging the
defense has played well although
giving up the big play, explained,
“we play a pursuit-type defense,
which causes us to over run from
time to time.”
Experience and mental
preparedness can straighten that
problem out, but the cure will not
come overnight. The Pirates will
need all the game experience they
can accummulate by the time
district play opens Sept. 28.
While the Vaqueros are not over-
powering in any area, they are not to
be taken lightly. But, if the Pirates
can indeed, balance their passing at-
tack with a little ground game this
week, they should find themselves in
the win column. If not, it could be a
long season.

After taking possession the next
couple of times the Pirates struck on

the kick failed making the score 14-
