Watershed group seeks comments
BY MATT HOLLIS

It was 70 years ago on
August 15, 1945, that
World War II effectively
ended with the surrender
of Japan to the Allies.
Earthman Memory
Gardens Cemetery took
time to remember this
historic event Sunday by
celebrating the 70th an-
niversary of V-J Day, or
Victory over Japan Day,
with the Spirit of ’45
Ceremony.
They celebrated the
anniversary by honor-
ing veterans with guest
speakers and prayer.
Thomas Wright, funer-
al home general manger,
made the opening re-
marks. Mayor Pro Tern
and veteran Brandon
Capetillo read a procla-
mation from the City of
Baytown.
Kevin Trailer, Baytown
assistant city manager
and veteran, also spoke.
He gave a speech about
his time in the military as
well as how important it
is for young people to un-
derstand and get behind
our military today. He
also spoke about how in
WWII, the soldiers faced
a different kind of ene-
my than we face today.
Their battles were mostly
boots on the ground and
some hand-to-hand com-
bat and now a lot of our
battle is fought through
computer servers and
staving off cyber-attacks.
He thanked the men that
The Cedar Bayou Wa-
tershed Partnership has
released the Draft Cedar
Bayou Watershed Pro-
tection Plan for public
comment. It is available
online at www.cedarbay-
ouwatershed.com. Com-
ments will be taken from
through September 5.
The Partnership, facili-
tated by the Houston-Gal-
veston Area Council
and the Texas State Soil
and Water Conservation
Board, consists of a vari-
ety of local stakeholders
from across the Cedar
Bayou watershed. Part-
nership efforts focus on
developing the WPP as
a roadmap to address the
water quality issues in
Cedar Bayou which affect
public health, the local
economy and the envi-
ronment. The Draft WPP
will serve as a roadmap
to guide voluntary efforts
for decades to come.
Cedar Bayou has been
identified by the Texas
Commission on Environ-
mental Quality as failing
to meet state water quality
standards. One of the pri-
mary impairments is ele-
vated levels of bacteria.
