For the last 25 years, Baytown
Habitat for Humanity has helped
change the lives of families. On
Oct. 6, it will celebrate that fact.
Habitat for Humanity will host
its “Opening Doors” anniversa-
ry celebration at Yepez Vineyard,
12739 Tri City Beach Road, where
they will recognize volunteers and
families that have been a part of
the process.
“Baytown Habitat is completely
volunteer driven and we want to
honor those people,” said Sandy
Denson, resource development
director. “Businesses and indus-
try are amazing here. We have so
many industries here that are re-
ally generous for this community
work and individual businesses
too. It takes everyone pulling to-
gether to make this happen.”
Pete Alfaro, longtime former
mayor of Baytown, will serve as
the master of ceremonies. Alfaro,
a former Habitat board member,
serves on the Habitat for Humani-
ty family selection committee.
“Habitat for Humanity has
helped a lot of people,” said Alfa-
“ “Habitat for Humanity has pro-
vided a very, very important and
extremely beneficial service to this
community. A lot of families have
gotten back on their feet by having
their own home, so it’s been a good
organization. We look forward to
the celebration and hopefully we
have a good turnout.”
Music, wine, and a buffet catered
by Executive Catering will be fea-
tured at the celebration, along with
testimonials from Habitat families.
Skyline Band, a nine-piece ensem-
ble that covers hits from the ‘60s,
‘70s and ‘80s, will perform.
Habitat for Humanity will also

recognize community volunteers
and sponsors.
“We’re working to honor those
volunteers who have made signif-
icant contributions throughout the
years,” said Denson. “And we’re
going to be honoring the original
board members that really were
the ground-breakers for us. We
have a lot of sponsors that have
been with us for years and years
and we just want to highlight those
people in the community that have
done all of this for us.”
Since 1990, Habitat for Human-
ity has completed 39 homes in the
Baytown area, which, for each
home, takes approximately 9,000
hours of labor to complete. During
construction, anywhere from 10 to
20 volunteers are on site helping.
“To be able to build a house, it
takes us about a year working two
half-days a week, which is pretty
amazing,” said Denson.
Along with volunteers, the fu-
ture homeowners are required to
complete 500 hours of “sweat eq-
uity” before they are able to pur-
chase the home.
Individual tickets for the anni-
versary celebration cost $25 and
sponsorship levels are available.
