Police dispute mother’s claim of excessive force
STAFF REPORTS
sunnews@baytownsun.com
Baytown police are disput-
ing claims made by a woman in
a KPRC television report this
week that officers used excessive
force against her 13-year-oid
son during an arrest in the early
morning hours June 20.
Lt. Eric Freed of the Baytown
Police Department said that,
about 1:15 a.m. that day, police
received a call from a resident in
the Ginger Creek Estates neigh-
borhood reporting that a white
Ford Taurus driven by a His-
panic male had just dropped off
two other Hispanic males, who
were approaching vehicles on
the street, looking into them and
pulling door handles.
Freed said that, before the call,
police had told officers to be on
the lookout for a white Ford Tau-
rus containing three Hispanic
males that was suspected of being
involved in previous vehicle bur-
glaries.
When an officer arrived, Freed
said, he spotted two males in the
5100 block of Cinnamon Street,
wearing all black clothing and
black socks with no shoes.
When the officer approached,
one of the subjects got away,
Freed said. The officer tried to
handcuff the one who remained,
but the suspect pulled away and
fled, running about 20 feet before
being caught again.
When he kept struggling, Freed

■ No charges filed after
participants decline
to pursue the matter
STAFF REPORTS
sunnews@baytownsun.com
An altercation Tuesday between a truck
driver and two people in a car ended in
minor violence but no charges after none
of the participants wanted to pursue the
matter.
Police said that apparently the people
in the car, a 64-year-old San Antonio man
and his 43-year-old daughter, believed
that their car was almost hit by a truck
driven by a 45-year-old Houston man
near Interstate 10 and Thompson Road.
The pair followed the truck to a truck
stop at the intersection.
They told police they did so to get iden-
tification information to file a complaint.
Witnesses said that the father ap-
proached the truck driver aggressively
and appeared to want a fight.
The daughter, witnesses told police, ap-
proached the truck driver and stuck her
cell phone in his face to take a picture.
The driver pushed her arm away and

► BEAUTIFICATION OF BAYTOWN
Project changes Hutto Boulevard into a park

JL V .La glimpse of what park im-
provements can do for a city.
Once a stark median and county drain-
age ditch in the middle of four busy lanes,
the city of Baytown’s Hutto Boulevard
park project is a prime example of how
greenery can really spruce things up.
“We still have a little bit of signage and
landscaping to do and a few trash cans
to install but it’s pretty much complete,”
said Parks and Recreation Director Scott
Johnson.
“It’s changed that whole street into a
park and went from a boring drive to a
really nice walking trail,” Johnson said.
“It gives you the feel of a park and people
have a place to go; it’s lighted and every-
one seems to like it.”
The $500,000 project was started in
November and will be completed in ear-
ly July. It extends the length of Hutto
Boulevard, and ends of begins (depend-
ing on which way you’re driving) at the
