Post 323 Ladies Auxiliary sends 10 locals to Girls State

American Legion Auxil-
iary Post 323 sent 10 local
girls to the 2013 session of
Bluebonnet Girls State.
Each year more than 500
girls from across Texas
gather at Texas Lutheran
University to form a myth-
ical 51st state. They orga-
nize their own city, county
■ and state governments.
They choose their own
officials in accordance
with regular election pro-
cedures.
They introduce and de-
bate their own bills in
legislature. In short, they
learn by doing.
Girls State is often re-
membered by participants
as one of the most import-
ant and impressive experi-
ences of their high school
years.
The ALA is only able to
continue this tradition be-
cause of continued finan-
cial support of the Evening
Pilot Club, Robert E. Lee,
Ross S. Sterling, Goose
Creek Memorial and Bar-
bers Hill high schools, as
well as Baytown Christian
Academy.
Hannah Blanscet
Hannah Blanscet, the
daughter of David and
Karlene Bema, is 'a ju-
nior at Baytown Christian
Academy and has had
many academic achieve-
ments throughout her edu-
cational career.
She has been accepted
into the National Honor
Society as the secretary, as
well as the National Soci-
ety of High School Schol-
ars. She has been the secre-
tary of her school’s student
council for the 2012-2013
school year and the 2013-
2014 school year.
Blanscet has been at-
tending Baytown Christian
Academy for 13 years and
this year plans to start a
school-wide Bible study
for those at her school who
don’t go to church. Blan-
scet has been a part of the
high-school choir for three
years and has attended
a prestigious choir com-
petition called “Heritage
Festivals” three times. She
helped found and was in
the Chess Club at Baytow n
Christian Academy. She
has been a part of Key Club
and helped volunteer with
her chok at “ExxonMobil
Day.” Blanscet is also a
tennis player for Baytown
Christian Academy and re-
ceived the most improved
player award for the 2012-
2013 season. She also has
been a piano student at
Dencie Lee’s School of
Performing Arts for 10
years. She was a member
of Theater Under the Stars
for three yeas and partici-
pated in a summer perfor-
mance of Disney’s Camp
Rock at Miller Outdoor
Theater. Blanscet main-
tains a high GPA and after
college hopes to study at
LeToumeau University to
major in counseling psy-
chology or education.
Shania Perez
Shania Perez, daughter
of Israel and Bernice Pe-
rez, is an honor student at
Baytown Christian Acai
emy with a GPA of 3.,
She is aiyjfficer at the Key
Club in herxhoolymd
president of the National
Hoifor Society. She has
ay athletic accomplish-
ments in volleyball, bas-
ketball and swimming. She
has helped with many Key
Club events for the city of
Baytown, such as Gator
Ride, Police Appreciation
Day, Earth Day, and Trick-
or-Treat for UNICEF.
Perez is at the top of her
class and has been taking
dual credit classes and AP
classes to get ahead in her
studies. She wants to earn
a degree in engineering.
She comes from a multi-
cultural family: Her father
being from Mexico and her
mother from Colombia.
She is able to bring these
two cultures together and
is able to teach others of
them, as well as learn from
other types of cultures and
languages. Her main goal
in life is to become a bea-

as the lead in the school
play, “South Pacific ”
Outside of school, Saveli
spends time with family
and friends. She studies
piano and can often be
found perfecting a newly
learned melody. She en-
joys being out in nature,
playing tennis, and hiking.
She persistently encour-
ages those around her to
make healthy choices and
maintain active lifestyles.
Saveli would like to thank
her parents and family for
their love and support.
Also, she would like to
thank her teachers and
faculty at BCA, who have
invested their time to care
for and teach the students
of Baytown. She is excit-
ed for this opportunity to
meet new people and be
exposed to different view-
points.
Arvn Clift
Aryn Clift, daughter
of Scot and Angie Clift,
is currently a junior at
Goose Creek Memorial
High School where she is
an honor roll student and
in the top 5 percent of her
class,
She has been a cheer-
leader for her school for
three years and has been
selected as the varsity
co-captain for the 2013-
2014 school year. She is
a member of ASL Club,

She is a
junior and
currently
in the top
10 per-
cent of
her class
while tak-
ing mul-
tiple AP
courses. For the past three
years. Smith has been very
involved in the school
choir. Her sophomore year
and junior year, she was in
the elite Show Choir and
an officer of the choir. This
past year Smith was one
of the coaches for an Up-
ward cheerleading team:
the practices started in De-
cember and the games ran
through February.
Smith also volunteers
at various functions with
her church, Second Bap-
tist Baytown, including
volunteering at the local
homeless shelter. Her oth-
er volunteer work is with
her choir.
In December the Show-
Choir toured around
Baytown singing at vari-
ous locations. Her hobbies
include singing, spending
time with her little sister,
reading, yoga and travel-
ing. Smith plans to attend
Texas A&M University in
College Station in the fall
of 2014 where she plans to
major in English and be-
come a high school teacher
'after graduation.
Han Bui
Han Bui is currently a
junior at Robert E. Lee
High School. She partici-
pates in the Interact Club,
Mu Alpha Theta, Student
Council, College Forward,
and Key Club. She has

Patriot Ambassadors, and
recently has been accepted
into the PALS program.
Clift is also a member of
the varsity choir, serving

During her years as a choir
member, she was voted by
her peers as the most im-
proved, most hardworking
and best student in her
voice part. Clift’s volun-

Bui is currently in the top
ten of her class and will be-
come the 2013-2014 Key
Club president and senior
class president. She plans
to attend the University of
Texas at Austin and major
in biology. She credits all
of her success to God and

Kursten Jaime
Kursten Jaime is the
daughter of Mark and Pa-
tricia Jaime and is a ju-
nior at Robert E. Lee High
School. Memberships in-
clude the Interact Club, the
National Honor Society,
and Mu Alpha Theta. Jai-
me received the American
Legion School award and
placed ninth in the History
Nationals in 2010.
Jaime’s athletic accom-
plishments in softball
include 2013/2012 All
District First Team and Ac-
ademic All District. Team
awards include Defen-
sive Player of the Year in
2013/2011 and Offensive
Player of the Year in 2012.
Upon graduation Jaime
plans to attend the Uni-
versity of Texas at Tyler to
major in education special-
izing in mathematics.
Taylor Kurbad
Taylor Kurbad is the
daughter of Heidi Kur-.
bad and granddaughter
of Ginny Kurbad, both
of Baytown. Kurbad is
currently a junior at Ross
S. Sterling High School
where she is. in AP class-
es and involved in many
clubs and activities.
Kurbad currently serves
as vice president of the ju-
nior class and will serve as
the student body president
for- the 2013-2014 school
year.
She is also a . proud
four-year member of the
Sterling Stars Drill Team
where she has been named
Sterling Stars social offi-
cer and secretary for her
upcoming senior year.
She was also named Miss
Congeniality at this year’s
Sterling Stars end-of-year
luncheon.
Kurbad also partici-
pates in PALS, Key Club,
Student Council, and the
Student Christian Union.
Kurbad plans on attending
Texas Lutheran University
or Baylor College where
she plans to study psychol-
ogy. Kurbad said that all
of her accomplishments
would not be possible
without her Lord and the
support of' her family and
friends.
Keller Thomas
Keller Thomas, daugh-
ter of Stephen and Sheri
Thomas, is a junior at Ross
S. Sterling High School.
She is in the top 5 percent
of her class and is enrolled
in all advanced placement
and dual credit classes.
Thomas plans to serve
as a walk-on member of
Student Council next year,
along with serving as pres-
ident of the National Hon-
or Society. Last summer,
she traveled to Austria,
France, Switzerland and
Italy as a student ambassa-
dor with People to People
International.
Thomas participated in
Key Club her freshman
and sophomore years and
served our community as a
PAL (Peer Assisted Lead-
er) this year and will con-
tinue to do so her senior
year. Additionally, Thomas
is a member of the RSS
girls’ golf team and is ac-
tive in her youth group at
Missouri Street Church of
Christ.
Her hobbies include
traveling, skiing, baking,
and shopping. Thomas
plans to attend Baylor Uni-
versity to study business
law upon completing her
high school career.
Brittney Boyd
Brittney Boyd is a ju-
nior at Barbers Hill High
School and is a second-
year member of the Na-
tional Honor Society. She
is the 16-year-old daughter
of Marshall and Tiffanie
Boyd and the granddaugh-
ter of Gene and Carole
Boyd and Ronald E. Means
and late Janith Means.
Boyd is involved in the
Barbers Hill FFA chapter
where she currently serves
as the student advisor and
the Area IX Association
second vice president. The
Area IX Association is one
of the largest areas in Tex-
as represented by 94 chap-
ters with over 8,500 FFA
members.
Boyd is also involved in
the Barbers Hill 4-H Club
where she has served as
president and is currently
the vice president for the
2013-2014 year.
Being involved in both
4-H and FFA, Boyd began
showing lambs at the age
of 4 and now exhibits cat-
tle, pigs, and goats as well.
Boyd has won close to 95
belt buckles and 16 grand
or reserve grand champion
banners on the local, state
and national levels. She ac-
tively participates in U.M.
ARMY (United Methodist
Action Reach-Out Mission
by Youth) at Cedar Bayou
Grace United Methodist
Church.
Boyd plans to attend
Texas A&M University in
College Station where she
will study animal science
and pharmaceuticals in the
fall of 2014.
