Man dies in
Banana Bend
boating crash
BY MATT HOLLIS
matt.hollis@baytownsun.com
No charges have been
filed in the case involving
the death of a 21-year-old
man on Sunday at Banana
Bend Marina near High-
lands, according to the
Harris County Sheriff’s
Office.
Authorities s^id that
around 11:30 a.m. Sun-
day, a man who was op-
erating a jet ski struck
two men that were being
pulled in an inner tube.
Two other people on an-
other jet ski weit pulling
the men in the inner tube
when they were struck by
the fifth man, whose jet
ski was either turned off
or stalled.
The fifth man apparent-
ly tried to avoid hitting
the two in the inner tube,
but was unable to steer the
craft away from them, hit-
ting them straight on. One
man came up from the
water, but the 21-year-old
slipped out of his lifejack-
et and disappeared under
the water. Harris County
Marine and Boat Rescue
recovered his body about
an hour and a half later.
“It is unknown at this
time if the DA is accept-
ing any charges at this
time,” said Tebben Lew-
is of the Harris County
Sheriffs Office.
So far, there is no indi-
cation that alcohol played
any role in the tragedy;
however, the incident is
still under investigation.
Authorities have not re-
leased the victim’s name
yet.
Texas GOPers aim to close
‘bypass’ for teen abortions
AUSTIN, Texas (AP)
— Texas, like many oth-
er conservative states, has
strived to make it difficult
for women to have abor-
tions. Recent state laws
have forced dozens of clin-
ics to close and left some
regions without a place for
women to go.
But Texas has one op-
tion that makes abortions
relatively accessible, and
that between 300 and 500
pregnant teenagers use ev-
ery year, Instead of seek-
ing parental consent to ter-
minate a pregnancy, girls
younger than 18 can ask
a court for approval under
legal conditions less strin-
gent than in other states.
About 20 percent of the
abortions performed on
minors in Texas in 2013
came through this court
process, about double the
proportion elsewhere.
Soon, though, the so-
called “judicial bypass”
may become less accom-
modating.
Conservatives are tar-
geting the teenage cases
as part of their legisla-
tive assault on abortion.
Bills would make it hard-
er for girls to prove they
shouldn’t have to seek
. parental permission and
more difficult for courts to
give approval.
Under state law, a young
woman can apply for legal
approval at a courthouse.
She has to prove to a judge
that she is mature enough
to make the decision, or
that telling her parents
would lead to physical,
sexual or emotional abuse,
or that consulting them
would otherwise not be in
her best interest.
