In Baytown, Sterling Mu-
nicipal Library provides
space for the AARP pro-
gram from noon to 4 p.m.
on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Two other locations sup-
ported by local volunteers
are at Stratford Library in
Highlands, from 11 a.m. to
3 p.m. Tuesdays, and at the
North Channel Branch of
Harris County Public Li-
brary, from noon to 4 p.m.
on Thursdays.
In the first two hours on
Tuesday at Sterling library,
12 AARP volunteers helped
more than 40 folks with
their taxes.
“Most of these volunteers
do it because they want to
help people,” said Robert
Mullens, a District 40 tax-
aide volunteer leader who
coordinates the Baytown
site and two other locations.
“Plus, this provides men-
tal stimulation,” Mullens
said. “Did you know there
are 70,000-plus pages of tax
code?”
Mullens said all volun-
teers are required to com-
plete IRS training and pass
tests each year in order
to help with tax prepara-
tion. And when they are
stumped, they can ask other
AARP volunteers for help,
or look up the answer.
“It really is a lot of fun
because you are meeting in-
teresting people,” Mullens
said.
In 2013, the Baytown site
alone completed 900 tax
returns and garnered about
$1.3 million in refunds.
It was a productive day
for Baytown resident Anna
Balentine, 22. She arrived
at Sterling library around 11
a.m. Tuesday and had filed
her income tax return by 1
p.m.
t in E
and Thursdays th
Taxpayers should bring the following items
them:
1 Social security cards for yourself and all
dependents
* A copy of last year’s tax return
’ W-2 forms from each employer
' Unemployment compensation statements
1SSA-1099 form if you were paid Social Security
benefits
* All 1099 forms (1099-INT, 1099-DIV, etc.)
* 1099R forms if you received a pension or annuity
► All forms indicating federal income tax paid
* Child care provider information
* Receipts or cancelled checks if itemizing
deductions
' Some type of picture ID
“This is my third year
of coming here for help,”
Balentine said. “It’s help-
ful, free, convenient and the
wait isn’t that long. There
are a lot of volunteers here
helping people all at once.”
Thomas Powell knows
numbers. He taught ac-
counting and business law
at Lee College for 32 years
before retiring. Now he vol-
unteers for the AARP tax-
aide program and has done
so for the past five years.
“I enjoy being busy,”
Powell said while taking
a brief break at Sterling li-
brary Tuesday.
“Many people know ab-
solutely nothing about fil-'
ing their income tax,” Pow-
ell said. “For example, I had
a Lee College student come
in here and had no idea how
to start the process. But
once I helped him to get it
done, he was tickled pink.”
In 2013, more than 2,100
AARP Foundation Tax-
Aide volunteers helped.
161,000 Texans file their
tax returns.
Nationwide, 35,000 vol-
unteers worked at 6,000
sites and provided 2.6 mil-
lion people with free tax
help. Taxpayers who used
the program received $1.3
billion in income tax re-
funds - including $105
million to Texan taxpayers
- and more than $244 mil-
lion in Earned Income Tax
Credits.
“Every year, thousands of
Texans help their neighbors
navigate filing their income
taxes, which is admittedly
one of the most complicat-
ed processes we have to go
through each year as Amer-
icans,” said Ron Craig, the
volunteer leader who coor-
dinates AARP Foundation
Tax-Aide throughout Texas.
