► FATHER’S DAY HOMICIDE
Son murdered while trying to protect mother
BY ELESKA AUBESPIH
eleska.aubespin@baytownsun.com
A 16-year-old boy was
murdered on Father's Day
while trying to protect his
mother during a knife attack
by her ex-boyfriend. .
On Monday, Baytown res-
ident Dene McCarter, 43,»
was charged with murder in *
connection with Prezton Ed-
wards’ death and remained at
the Harris County Jail on a
$50,000 bond.
Baytown police said the
double stabbing happened
about 9 p.m, Sunday at Bay
Harbor Apartments, 2500
East James Avenue.
At the scene police found
the body of Edwards, of
Baytown, who authorities
believe was stabbed in the
throat by McCarter during the
altercation.
The boy's mother had also
been stabbed and was flown
to a Flouston hospital by Life
Flight. She remained in sta-
ble condition on Monday.
According to an initial in-
vestigation, police detectives
determined that McCarter,
the mother’s ex-boyfriend,
was at the home earlier in the
day arguing with her.
McCarter allegedly re-
turned later that night, en-
tered the home and confront-
ed the mother in a bedroom
before pulling out a kitchen
knife and stabbing her, police

ExxonMobil
advances city
$1.3 million
■ Money will pay for six new police
officers, vehicles and other expenses
BY ELESKA AUBESPIN
eleska.aubespin@baytownsun.com
ExxonMobil. Corpora-
tion is a good neighbor to
Baytown and to show it,
will advance the city $1.3
million to fund six addi-
tional police officers, po-
lice vehicles and other as-
sociated expenses.
On top of that, Exxon-
Mobil will only require the
city to pay back 80 percent
of the loan.
“ExxonMobil is ad-
vancing us $1.3 million
and getting paid back
$ 1,040,000 with no inter-
est," said Baytown City
Manager Bob Leiper. "I’ll
make that deal any day."
During its public meet-
ing Thursday, the Baytown
City Council unanimously
approved an amendment
to the Industrial, District
Agreement with Exxon-
Mobil that allows the cor-
poration to provide the
advance funding over a
three-year period.
Under the amendment,
the parties agree that in
addition to its IDA pay-
ment, ExxonMobil will
make payments to the city
of Baytown in the amount
of $300,000 in December
2013, $500,000 in Decem-
ber 2014, and $500,000 in
December 2015.
The city, upon request,
will also provide Exxon-
Mobil documentation that
the funds it has provided
have been spent for police
officers, and the equipment
and expenses related to
their duties.
Lastly, under the agree-
ment, the city will credit
a portion of the advanced
monies against future in-
dustrial district payments
that ExxonMobil may owe
the city.
In other words, when
ExxonMobil makes an
IDA payment in Decem-
ber 2016, the city will
credit it $240,000, which
is 80 percent of what the
corporation advanced the
city in 2013, Leiper said.
The city also pays back
only $400,000 in Decem-
ber 2017, and another
$400,000 in December
2018.
“This will certainly help
us get what we need for the
police department,” said
Baytown Mayor Stephen
DonCarlos.
Since its initial IDA
agreement, ExxonMobil
has announced that it has
plans for a possible petro-
chemical expansion proj-

Mosquitoes return for summer
STAFF REPORTS
sunnews@baytownsun.com
Summer means barbecues, boating,
beaches and something far less enjoyable:
the return of mosquitoes.
Harris County Public Health and Envi-
ronmental Services confirmed this week
that it has trapped its first mosquito of
the season that tests positive for the West
Nile Virus, a mosquito-borne disease that
usually shows no symptoms or very mild
symptoms, but can rarely become very se-
rious or even fatal.
The mosquito was found in one of the
county's traps in the Atascocita area,
northwest of Crosby.
This is the first confirmed mosquito
