NEW CONTAINERIZATION FACILITIES FOR BARBOUR’S CUT
\ r • ih 7
New Highways Provide
Barbour’s Cut Access
The need for Khproved high-
ways in the Bajrsbore area was
widerscored last year, when
The Houston Port Authority an-
nounced plans {or a multi-mil-
lion dollar port facility at Bar-
baur's Cut.
After more than a year of
preparation and planning,
wort on the facility got under-
way in September, when a
1672,856 contract was let to At-
lantic Gulf and Pacific Co. for
Phase I dredging of a triangu-
lar area a: the entrance of Bar-
bour’s Cut. Contract for four
mooring dolphins and a T-
shaped pier followed in Octo-
ber, going to Ausco Inc. of
Hows ton, low bidder at $S47,S0Ql
Completion of Phase I will
enable the facility to serve
LASH (Lighter Aboard Ship)
vessels. LASH ships are'large
ships which carry barges in-
side and can launch these bar-
ges through an opening in the
rear of the “mother” vessel.
LASH vessels require only
mooring dolphins. After the
barges are La inched they will
be taken by tugs to their desti-
nations.
The first LASH vessel is
scheduled to arrive at the Bar-
bour's Cut terminal in March
of 1972
Dredging of the turning basin
and the construction of whar-
ves at the terminal will come in
later phases of development.
Total cost of the Barbour’s Cut
facility when fully developed
was estimated at $100 million
when (he project was announ-
ced in August 1970.
The eompiez is being built to
handle the new designs id con-
tainer ships, as well as the
huge new vessels which carry
lighters, or barges
It wil cover more than 600
acres, with a 40-foot-deep sea
cfaanneL a 1,600 foot turning
basin aad berths for 20 ships.
, It is a long range plan with
ultimate completion by 1990.
In announcing the new faci-
lity, Fentress jlracewell,
chairman of the Houston Port
Commission declared, “The
new port facility has distinct
advantages over any other
such facility announced or
“Planned by any other Gulf
port."
Development of the Mor-
—--------s—
gap’s Point area that was
visualized by Capt. C. A. Bar-
bour over 40 years ago will be a
dream come true to many La
Porte kid Bayshore residents
who have stood on the sidelines
for over a half century while
the Port ot^ Houston went by
them.
A combination of two factors
— ships that are too big to use
the narrow Houston Ship Chan-
nel and prior development of
the turning basin area — re-
sulted in the long range plan-
ning of the port commission for
facilities to serve the naviga-
tion world in the future. \
There was only one
develop the portion of the
that has the geographical
vantage aid which had begged
for development through the
years.
