LEE COLLEGE DAY
WHAT: An opportunity for
students and parent to
learn about transferring
to four-year college
WHO: College students
and parents
WHEN: 9:30 a.m.-12:30
, p.m. today
WHERE: Lee College
Student Center
ical Branch Galveston,
and the University of St.
Thomas, among others.
This is the 12th consec-
utive year the Counseling
Center has hosted the
event.
“In previous years,
this event was geared
toward Lee College stu-
dents,” explained Dp.
Rosemary Coffman,
Lee College associate
dean of student affairs.
“However, given the
rising costs of many
four-year colleges and
universities, we felt it
was important to open
this event to the com-
munity at large, to help
high school students,
parents, and teachers un-
derstand the cost savings
associated with begin-
ning one’s education at a
community college.”
According to Dr. Coff-
man, tuition and fees for
an in-district student en-
rolled in 12-credit hours
average $759 per semes-
ter or $1,518 per year.
In comparison, average
costs for in-resident tui-
tion at public, four-year
institutions in Texas are
estimated at $7,411, ac-
cording to the non-profit
College for All Texans.
“In addition to the fi-
nancial savings, studies
have also shown that
students who begin at a
community college and
transfer to a four-year
school graduate at sim-
ilar rates and maintain
similar grade-point-av-
erages as students who
began their academic
careers at four-year in-
stitutions,” Dr. Coffman
continued. “And be-
cause the core curricu-
lum in Texas is designed
to transfer to any public,
four-year institution in
the state, credits earned
at Lee College will not
go to waste.”
