The Baytown Family YMCA
kicked off its 2016 fundraising
campaign Tuesday with a goal to
raise $75,000 this year. The orga-
nization also honored David and
Donna Mohlman with the group’s
first-ever Community Caring
Award.
Baytown Mayor Stephen Don-
Carlos presented the award.
David Mohlman recently stepped
down as executive director of the
United Way of Greater Baytown
and Chambers County after serv-
ing at its executive director for 14
years.
While he is best known in the
community for his years of service
through United Way, he said he got
his start in local community service
at the Baytown Family YMCA.
“As a single adult returning to
Baytown in the mid-1980s starting
work as a reporter at The Baytown
Sun, one of the things I was look-
ing for was an opportunity to serve
the community in a meaningful
way. I found it at Baytown family
YMCA.”
He soon began to coach a teen
basketball team and serve on the
ber to collect up to $2,000 and
$5,000 in a case involving mur-

Mont Belvieu Police Chief Virgil
Blasdel provided city council with a ra-
cial profiling report, indicating that the
police stopped more than 3,000 people
last year with 174 being arrested.
“In regards to the report and arrests
made for 2015 on traffic stops, the
number of arrests made during traffic
stops varies from year to year, depend-
ing on the violations found during the
stop and the type of violations discov-
ered,” said Blasdel. “Also, on many
traffic stops the officers discover per-
sons with open warrants and placed into
custody on those warrants. Our traffic
enforcement has increased dramatical-
ly over the last several years due to the
large increase in construction traffic
within the City of Mont Belvieu. At the
beginning of 2015 with the assistance
of the city’s administration and City
Council, I created a Traffic Enforce-
ment Unit within the department. This
new unit is dedicated to traffic enforce-
ment on a daily basis and we have seen
a drop in the traffic accidents since that
time.” i
According to the report, a total of
2,269 whites, ?00 Hispanics, 259
blacks, 11 Asians, 11 Middle Eastern-
ers and four Native Americans were
stopped in 2015. There was a total of
1,987 males and 1,067 females.
The reasons for the traffic stops were
2,554 for moving violations, 406 for
vehicle traffic violations, 64 for a vio-
lation of the law other than traffic and
30 for pre-existing knowledge such as
having an outstanding warrant.
A search was conducted in 141 of
the traffic stops. The reasons for the
searches vary from five consent search-
es, two where the contraband/evidence
was in plain sight, seven with probable
cause, 64 inventory searches performed
when the vehicle was towed and 63 that
resulted in an arrest. Contraband was
discovered in 10 of the searches. The
