Chris Presley looks over property he is preparing to develop on Texas Avenue.
■ Entrepreneur cleared
for first new private
construction on Texas
Avenue in 40 years

Chris Presley isn’t new to building renova-
tion.
The Baytown real estate entrepreneur is
responsible for cosmetic or structural repairs
on two Texas Avenue buildings, and he com-
pletely renovated an empty, shutdown boat
business into upscale living space known as
The Avenue Lofts in Baytown’s old down-
town.
Now, with the excitement of a child on
Christmas morning, Presley stands on an
empty lot at 650 West Texas Avenue and
explains his latest project - a 1’,650-square-
foot commercial development and related
parking area.
What’s different about this venture is that
Presley is building the development from the
ground up. It is the first time a private
investor has constructed a new building in
old downtown in decades, at least 40 years.
Lee College did construct its new perform-
ing arts centerjn downtown but the college
is a public institution, and the city of
Baytown is constructing an emergency oper-
ations building on Main Street.
Presley hopes that although the commer-
cial building will be small, it will be worth
its weight in gold - and in luring new devel-

Manuel Galvan uses a hose to suck up the water left after heavy rains fell through Baytown prior to the second day of the
annual Chili When It's Chilly outside of San Jacinto Mall on Saturday afternoon. Galvan, who entered the food competition
through the name, Grillen-N-Chillen, is assisted by Jose Valdez (sweeping) and Raul Reyna. This is the fourth year that the
men have entered the food contest, cooking chili, brisket, ribs and other foods.

One of the anchors of Baytown’s old downtown
business community will be leaving the area soon,
but the owner say ’s she’s not going out of business
-just moving to greener pastures.
Maria Zoes, owner of Trattoria Italia, said the
business is not closing, but the building is for sale.
Once the building is sold, she plans to move
Trattoria Italia to a new location. She doesn’t have
a new location yet, she said, but is looking closer to
Interstate 10 where there is greater traffic and visi-
bility.
Trattoria Italia is currently at 104 N, Main Street,
just north of Texas Avenue.
“I’ve always been a hundred-percent supporter of
the revitalization of this area, but seeing that every-
thing’s being moved north, I guess I’m going to
have to follow suit. I just can’t sit here and wait for
people to come over here when everything’s hap-
pening down at the mall and the city’s pushing

It’s a scene that is happening across
the country: organizations for military
veterans and their families are closing
down due to a lack of participation.
The Disabled American Veterans
Auxiliary (DAVA) Unit 126 in Baytown
could be a casualty as well, said Jerry E.
Buchan, a disabled veteran who served
in the U.S. Marine Corps.
“We are trying to get people involved
in the DAVA in order to keep it from
going under and it’s not working,” said
Buchan, a Baytown resident who is also
the commander of the DAVA Unit 126.
“All of the veterans organizations are
having the same problems because peo-
ple won’t come out and support us.”
In one last ditch effort to keep the
DAVA operating, Buchan is inviting the
public to an auxiliary meeting at 6:30
p.m. Monday at the VFW Hall, 8204 N.
Main.
To avoid an 18-month suspension and
possible disbandment; it would only take
five people to show up and become
members of the DAVA, an auxiliary
branch of the Disabled American
Veterans (DAV) Chapter 126 in
Baytown.
The auxiliary, Buchan explained,
