Dewhurst, Patrick in runoff results for candidates with local ties

AUSTIN - Texas Republicans picked
the state’s attorney general in the fight to
succeed longtime Gov. Rick Perry, while
a rising Democratic star coasted to her
party’s nomination Tuesday night during
the nation’s first statewide primary.
Warnings about Democrat Wendy Da-
vis’ star-making run for Texas governor
threatening two decades of Republican
dominance dealt complacent conserva-
tives a new reason to vote. So did a rare
opportunity to select an entirely new sta-
ble of leaders after 14 years under Perry.
Perry’s decision to not seek re-election
launched a stampede of 26 Republican
candidates vying for six of Texas’ top of-
fices. Among them was George P. Bush,
the 37-year-old nephew of former Presi-
dent George W. Bush and son of former
Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who easily won
the nomination for land commissioner in
his political debut.
In the first primary since Ted Cruz bar-
reled into the U.S. Senate in 2012 and
yanked Republicans nationwide further
right, Texas candidates willingly went
along.

Several candidates with close local ties
were among the many people running for
office in statewide or regional races. Here’s
how some of them were looking at about 10
p.m. Some races were still too close to call.
U.S. Senate
Dwayne Stovall lived the first 10 years of
his life in Baytown and now lives in Liberty
County. He looked to be running third in the
race, which was dominated by incumbent
John Cornyn.
U.S. House of Representatives
Pat Kasprzak has called Crosby home for
33 years. She was not among the frontrun-
ners in the crowded field of 12 Republican
candidates.
Texas Attorney General
Barry Smitherman is a Highlands native
and 1976 graduate of Ross S. Sterling High
School. He conceded the race about 10 p.m.,
with voting numbers showing him with too
few votes to reach the runoff in the three-
way race.
Texas House District 129
Brent Perry grew up in the area and grad-
uated from Robert E. Lee High School. By
10 p.m., he was running third in the race, but
with enough votes still out that it was un-
clear if he could gain enough ground to get

Couple to file formal complaint against BPD

A Houston couple said they plan
to file a formal complaint against
the Baytown Police Department
after officers used Tasers to sub-
due them outside of a children’s
party.
Jodi White, 32, and her hus-
band Christopher White, 37, were
arrested Sunday after police re-
sponded to a disturbance at JB’s
Reception Hall at 4219 W. Baker
Road in Baytown. They were both
charged with disorderly conduct.
The Whites were attending a
birthday party for their 1-year-old
Baytown husband and wife were subdued
by Taser outside nephew’s birthday party
nephew when
police deployed
Tasers during a
disturbance be-
tween adults.
Jodi White said
the stun gun left
marks on her legs
and back.
As of Tuesday,
Baytown police could not confirm
whether a formal complaint was
received but a spokesman said the
case was referred to internal af-
JODI WHITE
fairs.
In a press state-
ment, police said
officers were
called at about 3
p.m. when some-
one reported that
unwanted guests
refused to leave
the reception hall.
While officers
were there, adults began to argue
and police ended the party for
safety reasons because children
CHRISTOPHER
WHITE
were in attendance.
“While in the parking lot a guest
began to curse at police and creat-
ed a disturbance in the presence of
several children,” the BPD state-
ment said. “An officer warned the
female guest and told her to leave
but she kept cursing and refused to
leave.”
The woman, who was Jodi
White, admits she shouted an in-
sult to police officers. But because
police had blocked the reception. .:
hall parking lot, she could not leave
like she was told to do. White said
in a television news report.
A Gentry- Junior School
student was charged with
assault after he allegedly in-
jured two classmates in what
police say w as an attempt to
recruit gang members.
At least one of the stu-
dents received an injury that
involved red swelling to the
right side of his neck, police
said.
Police add that the injured
student went to the school
nurse for treatment and she
brought it to the attention of
the assistant principal. Then
the assistant principal told
fpolice the teen may be in-'
volved or associated with a
street gang and the assaults
could have been gang relat-
ed.
The boy allegedly assault-
ed the other boys on two
separate occasions at the
Archer Road campus last
week, police said.
Each of the boys involved
are 13 years old.
School district officials
are aware of the incident.
“The incident was inves-
tigated and the student in-
volved is being disciplined
in accordance with the. Dis-
trict’s Student Code of Con-
duct,” said Kathy Clausen,
director of communications.

Cedar Bayou, 146 construction
making way for larger cargo
BY MARK FLEMING
mark.fleming@baytownsun.com
A project to clear land along Cedar Bayou
just northeast of the Highway 146 bridge is
not a sign of new construction - at least at that
location.
Baytown city officials contacted about the
construction work said they had been getting
questions about the earthmoving activity at
the site, but that the property owner said the
work is just a matter of clearing out decades
of accumulated debris and leveling out the
property.
The location, which is as far upstream as
most vessels can travel on Cedar Bayou, is of-
ten used to offload large pressure vessels used
in construction projects in the Mont Belvieu
area.
Chambers County Commissioner Rusty
Senac, whose precinct includes the area, said
the cleanup and leveling is in preparation for
even larger vessels. “They’re talking about
moving some very large vessels - larger than
they have in the past.”
He said another change that is being made
to accommodate the oversized vessels is that
utility lines crossing the roadway are being
raised to provide higher clearance along a
route down FM 565 to FM 3180, then on 3180
to Mont Belvieu.
“In the past they’ve actually had to go
through and lift lines in different areas to al-
low vessels to pass,” Senac said.
