Elise Guidroz turned
100 years old Feb. 27.
Only about 1 in 4,400
Americans lives to be
100.
Why she was able to
reach such a milestone
was a matter of discussion
at a celebration for her at
Highland House Assisted
Living Facility Saturday.
Good genes was one of
the reasons.
Guidroz’s uncle, Gui
Cousin, lived to be 104.
Her two grandmothers
each lived to be 99 years
old.

grandmother, died at age

BIBLE VERSE
Have not I commanded
you? Be strong and coura-
geous. Do not be terrified;
do not be discouraged, for
the Lord your God will be
with you wherever you go.
—Joshua 1:9
Wewer, 71, said
Wewer’s grandmother
had two aunts who never
married and lived to be
104 and 107 years old, re-
spectively.
“We’re talking about
the days before there was
a Louisiana Purchase,”
Wewer said. “Those were
also the days that nobody
lived to be 100, but like I
said, there are good genes
in our family.”
She came here from the
; Carolinas,” said Jose Ar-
nold Paz, 71, Guidroz’s
adopted son. He traveled
from Jackson, Miss, to
celebrate the occasion. “I
love my mother. We love
] her. She means so much
to us.”
Food was mentioned as
; another possibility for her
| long life. Guidroz knew
I something about cooking
| Cajun and Creole food in
New Orleans, where she
lived a lot of her adult
life.
Guidroz has called the
Highland House home
since 2007.
“She really likes resid-
ing here with us. She es-
pecially enjoys the food,”
the facility’s co-director
John Kelly said. “She is
always commenting on
how good the food is.”
Elise met her husband,
Henry F. Guidroz, Jr., at
an employment agency
in New Orleans. They
married six months later
on June 18, 1938. Henry
son, Jose Arnold Paz.
passed away in Decem-
ber 1999 after 61 years of
marriage.
Elise studied photogra-
phy at Tulane Universi-
ty in the 1950s and was
a Girl Scout leader for
many years.
“Her attitude in life and
her way of seeing things
has always been posi-
tive,” Paz said. “When my
family came to the Unit-
ed States when 1 was 9,
we lived next door to the
Guidroz family. Eventual-
ly I came to be in the care
of these folks. They took
me under their wings.”
Guidroz was bom on
Feb. 27, 1914 in Laurel,
Miss.
As a teenager during
the Great Depression,
Guidroz was a popular
student at New Orleans’
St. Mary’s Dominican
High School, an all female
school founded in 1860.
“I attended every re-
union,” she said until her
husband’s death.
“The nuns had given
her a good grounding in
her faith, which has al-
ways been a great source
of solace and joy to her,”
Wewer said.
Guidroz also studied
millinery in Houston in
the 1960s and made many
hats. She sold some but “it
was mostly a hobby.”
Guidroz said she was
pleased that people came
to celebrate with her.
“I think it’s great to
make something out of
all of this. It’s all going
smoothly,” she said.

City council begins annexation
of land for retail development
Baytown City Council
has started the process to
annex 28 acres of vacant
land south of Interstate 10
that will be used for retail
development.
The property sits west
of Garth Road between
Hunt and Archer roads
and is south of Academy
Sports + Outdoors.
“The front part is al-
ready in the city but this
is just the portion being
annexed,” said Baytown
City Manager Bob Leiper.
The total development
is 35 acres and will even-
tually house 3,000-square-
feet of new retail.
In March, Baytown City
Council is expected to get
details of a proposed 380
agreement for the project,
which allows the city to
provide assistance to help
spur economic develop-
ment.
