Tragic end to SWAT standoff
BY ELESKA AUBESPIN
eleska.aubespin@baytownsun.com
A 50-year-old Baytown man re-
portedly took his own life Monday
after an hours-long standoff with
Baytown police.
Police said Charles Lassiter appar-
ently shot himself.
No one else was harmed during the
incident.
Lassiter's body was discovered
dead in the bedroom of his home in
the 5000 block of Pepper Mill Ave-
nue, hours after police called their
SWAT team to the property and tried
every tactic possible to flush the man
out without injury to himself or oth-
ers.
Police originally got the call after 1
p.m. after a woman and her daughter
ran out of Lassiter's home because

Two seniors at Chinqua-

Highlands are changed cit-
izens, thanks to an up-close
and personal experience
with American democracy
during a recent trip to Wash-
ington, D.C.
Jessica Bernal and Rah-
saan King were among 18
seniors at the prep school
who participated in the
weeklong Close Up pro-
gram. a national program
that provides high school
students with a nonstop, in-
teractive look at democracy
inaction.
While this is often a
life-changing week for any-
one who attends, the timing
of this year's scheduled trip
left an indelible mark on
17-year-old King, who as-
pires to be a future presiden-
tial candidate.

■ Pair remains hospitalized
following Saturday accident
BY MARK FLEMING
mark.fleming@baytownsun.com
Two contractors injured in an accident at
ExxonMobil’s Baytown Refinery remained
hospitalized Tuesday, recov ering from their
injuries.
Steve Stewart, vice president and busi-
ness unit manager with Savage Services,
which employs the men, said the two men
“are being treated at the hospital now and
hopefully treatments will get those guys
back to good health."
He said his company is working with
ExxonMobil to determine the cause of Sat-
urday's accident, which happened about 10
a.m.
Stewart said the company is a long-term
embedded contractor that regularly oper-
ates the unit that was involved in the acci-
dent.
The unit was dow n for a "mini-shutdown”
at the time of the accident, Stewart said.
Connie Tilton, ExxonMobil spokeswom-
an, said Monday that she did not yet have
information about the cause of the accident.
“We regret that we had two contractors
injured at the refinery on Saturday." she
said. "The incident is under investigation.
Beyond this, 1 do not have any further in-
formation."
Stewart said that Savage Services is a
contractor for ExxonMobil that operates
. cutting and material handling of petroleum
coke at the refinery.
Petroleum coke is a byproduct of oil re-
fining that looks much like coal and is sold
as either a fuel or as a raw material.
