The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots are qui-
etly putting together one of their best basketball
seasons in the school’s brief history.
But head coach Duane Fikac, who just
watched his team take third place in the Gulf
Coast Classic, knows that pre-district wins are
nice, but district wins are what counts.
“It all starts now,” said Fikac, who will, take
his club over to Robert E. Lee to meet the
Ganders in both teams’ District 24-4A.opener at
7:30 p.m. today. “And this is a great game to
start with.”
GCM enters tonight’s cross-town rivalry with
an 11-9 record. It has played some of the top 4A
and 5A teams in the Houston area, including
Nederland. Oak Ridge, Deer Park and C.E.
King.
The Patriots are led by the dynamic duo of
DeAndre Durden and Curtis Granberry, who
also were the two leaders on the football team.
The two guards are both averaging in double
figures. Durden also is. one of the best defend-
ers on the team.
Post player Julian Powell (6-foot-6) also has
shown signs of developing into one of the best
post players in the area. He can shoot the 3-
pointer, score off the dribble'and is working
diligently on developing a low-post game.
Tyrone Massicott and Demitrius Dolphus
also have scored in double digits several times
this season.
The Ganders, meanwhile, enter the' league
. opener only 743, but they should receive quite
a boost from the return of guard Josh Zellars.
Zellars has missed the first six weeks of the
season with a knee injury he suffered near the
end of the football season. He and Jamari
Gilbert will form one of the best backcourts in
District 24-4A, -
Richard Echeverria also is a deadly 3-point
shooter, while Kaleb Hockless and Louis
Fernandez are capable of putting up double fig-
ures and Denny Braxton (6-4) can be a load
under the boards.
Lee went 2-3 in the Gulf Coast Classic.

Lady Eagles seek sole possession of 1st
BY TODD HVEEM
sports@baytownsun.com
ATASCOCITA' The
Barbers Hill Lady Eagles
and Summer Creek Lady
Bulldogs come into today's
4 p.m. clash with undefeated
District 19-4A records.
But there are a couple of
factors that could weigh
heavily into which teams
walks out of Summer Creek
High School with sole pos-
session of first place in the
girls’ basketball race.
No. I, the game is at
Summer Creek. The Lady
Bulldogs, who are 12-4
overall and 5-0 in the league,
have lost only one game at
home all year that coming
to Class 5A power Spring.
The Lady Bulldogs’ other
losses have come against 5A
powers Klein Collins.
Cypress Ranch and Port
Arthur Memorial.
The loss to Port Arthur
Memorial is the most
intriguing. And. it leads to
factor No. 2.
Summer Creek, which
probably has the most athlet-
ic team in 19-4A, lost to the
state’s 12th-ranked Lady
Titans 60-43 in the YMBL
tournament on Nov. 30.
Barbers Hill, which is
ranked No. 9 in Class 4A,
knocked off Port Arthur
Memorial 4442 to win its
own Gulf.Coast Classic on
Saturday, the game went
down to the wire before the
. Lady Titans missed a pair of
free throws in the final two
seconds that probably would
have sent the contest into
overtime.
The Lady Eagles, despite
losing college stars Shannon
Evans (Faulkner University)
and Kendall Shaw
(Vanderbilt), and head coach
Kit Martin (Mansfield
Timberview), have showed
the world they are out to
defend their Region 1II4A
title of a year ago.
Senior shooting guard
Makenzi May, who w*as
named the Most Valuable
Player of the Gulf Coast
Classic, has recaptured her
shooting eye after coming
out late due to the state vol-
leyball playoffs.
May, who is averaging
more than 15 points per
game, dropped in 17 points
in the win over Port Arthur
Memorial. She is a definite
college prospect.
Kaylee Kana and Kimi
Carter, who also was an all-
tournament selection, also
are having excellent seasons
forTri Danley’s crew, which
comes into the contest 184
overall and 6-0 in district
play.
The Lady Eagles’ last dis-
trict win was a 5747 victory
DISTRICT 19-4A
.over Dayton, which also
came into the contest unde-
feated. That game, however,
was played at Barbers Hill,
meaning the Lady Eagles
will have to go to Dayton in
the second half of the district
race.
Danley said the confer-
ence race should come
down to Dayton. Summer
Creek and Barbers Hill.
“Right now, that is the
way it looks,” Danley said
before the Gulf Coast
Classic. “But you never
know. There are some other
teams in the league who are
capable of making a run (at
the playoffs)."
Barbers Hill will return
home to host New Canev at
2 p.m. Friday.
In other games today.
Goose Creek Memorial,
which won the bronze
bracket championship in the
Gulf Coast Classic, will
travel to meet Pearland
Dawson at 7:30 p.m. GCM,
which comes into the game
14-6 overall and 4-0 in
District 24-4A play, is led by
the scoring of Faith Cook
and Meagan Perry. Pearland
Dawson also is 4-0 in the
league: Crosby also will
travel to meet Humble at
7:30 p.m. today. -
On Thursday, Ross S.
Sterling (4-16 overall and 0-
2 in District 21-5A play) will
travel to meet Deer Park at 7
p.m. Deer Park also is 0-2 in
21-5A play. Robert E. Lee
(5-11 overall and 0-4 in
District 24-4A) will host
Galena Park in its next game
at 2 p.m. Friday.
