—
Congressman Jack Beall has
served his first term in congress
and is now at home to enjoy a vaca-
tion. He was delayed several days
in leaving Washington after con-
gress adjourned on account of the
illness of his little son. After spend-
ing a few days at home resting Mr.
Beall will make a tour of the fifth
congressional district for the pur-
pose of meeting his friends and in-
cidentally pressing his claims ti/r
re-election.
While it has been generally yon-
ceded that Congressman Beall v/ould

representative of the fifth ΛΪstrict
Jie first definite announcement to
r°Lat effect yas made by Jj/m yester-
av afternoon In an i'iierview with
"reporter for thl^-jraper. When
seen by the reporter Mr. Beall was
at his office where he had gone to
look over his mail which had ac-
cumulated in the time between the
adjournment of congress and his ar-
rival home. After discussing the
political situation a f*>w minutes the
reporter propounded the following
query to Congressman Beall:
"It has been generally assumed
that you will be a candidate for con-
gress again this year. Am 1 author-
ized to so announce?"
"Yes you may do so. The first
session of a member in congress is
largely a course of training by
which he prepares himself to serve
his people to better advantage in the
future. I'nder the system prevail-
ing in the House it is not possible
for a new member to secure assign-
ment to the more important commit-
tees. He must begin at the foot of
the class and 'spell up.' i have in-
troduced a number of measures that
1 hope to secure action upon in-
cluding a bill prohibiting dealing in
'futures' in agricultural products
one to refund the cotton tax col-
lected from the South and one regu-
iatinir the jurisdiction of Federal
conrts. "

"It ie^becauae it ia believed that

ii* Considered by many the most
available man for the nomination.
That he ia a clean man both Jn hi
private and public life no man can
deny; that he is able is everywhere
admitted ; that he haa always aup-
ported the regular democratic ticket
both state and national and that he
^is an orthodox democrat reared
under the tatelaKe of Samuel J.
Tilden who would fill the presiden-
tial office with dignity and honor
can scarcely be diaputed now.
"I hope that the issue can be de-
termined in Texas in fairness and
good humor. It ia useless for dem-
crats to become embittered because
I of political differences. Obedience
to the will of the people is the very
essence of democratic faith When
that will is expressed at St. Louis it
ought to end all controversy among
démocrate. I am very much grat-
ified to observe the announcement
from Mr. Hearet that he will abide
the result of the St. Louie conven-
tion. 1 expected this of him be-
cause the verv loyal and valuable
support he rendered the party in
the past campaigns has shown fliht
he is the right kind of a democrat.
"I have been a very ardent ad-
mirer of Mr. Bryan. 1 consider
him as the equal of any man who
has been upon the stage of Amer-
ican politics for a generation past.
1 honor and respect him too much
to believe that he will refuse to
obey the expressed will of the party
that hae| so signally honored him.
Kcr the past three year· he has
scourged the 'reor)iani/.ers' too
mercilessly fur him now regardless
of what the result may be at the
convention to become himself a
'disorganizer.' "
