Kort Worth. Texaa Dec. β.—An ef-
fort to burn the city hall and police
station was spoiled by the police ear-
ly this morning when they diaeovered
the'cell in which James Smith was
confined aflame and part of the cell-
ing burned. Tbia cell is directly un-
der the city waterworks office. Im-
mediately* following the discovery of
the flames the five policemen who
were on duty huddled the prisoners
Into the chief of police's office and
fought the fire until It was estln-
gulxhed. Smith who started the
blase made hla escape but the oth-
ers remained.
