ed Into free feeding of children and
lieu medical inspection leading lo
free treatment and the latest devel-
opment «an that school authorities
«ere responsible for accidents to
tiie children ο;i the playgrounds. It
might also be Imagined from pres-
ent day legislation that God gave
children to th? state 'jr municipality!
in· lead of to the parents.
At tile 'same lime there was helj'
a conference of the National Keder-j
ation of Christian Workers Among!
! I'oor Children f.t which the speaker j
strongly deprecated the surrender of;
children to the street instead of keep-
ing them at home. No training
ground not even the school he urg-
ed could take the place of homo
and no other influence could com-
pensate for lack of parental control.
Although these two utterances and
the two gatherings at which tlvy
were made were entirely separa'ej
and distinct there was a markodl
parallelism of thought and convie-1
l'on ou l hi s mutter and Ihe utter-
ances were correct and deserve·'.
and would be so in New Vork as
well as in London. It is disheati-
eniug too. that to an alarming; ex-
tent parental control of children has
been relaxed il' not altogether aban-
! ionel. and responsibility not only
; or technical Instruction hut for
j moral culture and general discipline
! has been shifted from the home to
j ;lu' school. A New Jersey socialist
j recently secured some notoriety by
j heriliiiK his young children in a
j building of their own where they
might live as they pleaaed and grow
up as they pleased without parental
aid control or overflight. Some New
Jersey (omuiuuities loft It to the
suffrage* of small children to do-
clde whether or not there should be
fireworks on the Fourth of July.
These tricks and capers were minor
systems of an evil which Is attaining
ominous proportions and the effects
of which are seen with Increasii"»;
frequency in Juvenile and adoles-
cent vice and crime.
Tin· laws of nature are not to be
discarded with Impunity and there
ts probably none of thent more lm
perntive or more Inexorable In Its
exaction of penalties for I(s violation
than that which prescribes parental
dire for and control of I their chil-
dren and dutiful subjection of chil-
dren to their parents so satisfac-

has yet been found and fit may well
tie believed that any attempt to ab-
rogate that law whether in îavor
of commune or school la sure to re-
sult in disgust.—New Yjork Tribune.
