I have heard others rhv that pau-
I" γΙκιιι in not alto* ι her confined to
Ih.. Pliure led class but on the con-

recruits from the unlettered. They
say every time you start a voiing
man or young woman out tralued to
become a victor in the battle of life
you reduce pauperism and cut down
the expense of government.
.Some one has even said that a
government whose people are educa-
ted are liberty loving patriotic and
law abiding while an Ignorant peo-
ple are either the slaves of a few
leading spirits or rebellious and al-
ways engaged In civil strife and re-
bellion against authority.
It has been intimated that the
man or woman who reads and thinks
Is more cheerful and less selfish tlutn
those whose field of observation Is
confined to the narrow precincts of
home and self.
Some one has been mean enough
to assert that mutt Is an animal and
that mental development Is the best
method of getting his baser Instincts
tinder subjection.
It Is α concensus of opinion among
α great many that α large number
of our citizens are too poor tit pay
for the education of their children
anil It seems that the majority of
the people of Texas have thought It
for the better Interests of the stale
lo furnish free tuition a great many
men of means scenting cheerfully to
contribute their quota of the ex-
pense.
Brother Douglas 1 have tulked
over your letter with several and
the above Is about what they tell me.
Τ thought I had them when I told
them you said the free school sys-
tem originated In Yankeedom but
several of them snld they were wear-
ing Boston made shoes and darned
if they were going barefooted be-
cause shoes did not originate In Tex-
as There Is nothing original In what
I have said here but II is only glean-
ings from others ι do not know
which Is right you or they.
