I I don't care to publish The day I
I was there my boy was with me. He
is eight years old and can talk and
can tell all the family secrets and
take* great pleasure In unloading on
me. When we left home that morn-
ing I told him that we would get
chicken for dinner and that he
should have the gi/.zard and liver
too. He clapped tils hands and says
"Bully whoppee you are a fine old
daddy." Well we didn't get any din-
ner but got a good wet drink out oi
a well. About 2 o'clock I says. "Son
I don't like chicken anyway do
you?" "No daddy" ho says "but I
think a piece of raw dog would RO
pretty well to me right now." and
he put his hand on his little stom-
ach. 1 then drove into Red Oak and
got him a dinner at th ; store. George
Ligon can catch on as quick as any-
body so he got the boy back in the
bank and the little scamp told it all
and even put the flourishes on.
Pretty soon Will Rockett came and
there I was. They told it and retold
it. and the mischief of it all was "it
I was so." It didn't take me long to
! get a plenty'of such medicine as that
so 1 started for home. When I got
there the boy's mother and sister
asked him about his big dinner and
I he repated his pyrotechnics with ex-

ι me yet but the boy says chicken is
all right but the promise of chicken
is not worth going after.

ies in the republic and has perhaps
j '.ο 000 Inhabitants or more It Is
I eautlfullv located with mountains
on ever* side although tht- city it-
self is lu a valley of considerable
area Th·· el· vatlon of Durango Is
about 7000 feet above si a level
and has the finest climate I have
ever known. The temperature In
summer rarely gets above To degrees
Fahrenheit and in winter is never
below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The
nights In summer are always cool
enough for heavy cover as the mer-
cury falls after sundown.
As to health. there ian be no
healthier place anywhere The peo-
ple are simple in their habits cloth-
ing and living and .ill <efm perfectly
happy and contented Th>· buildings
here are of ι he ancient Mexican
type largely and some houses of
note in this city are said to be over
ΠΟΑ years old and still intact al-
though built of mud or adobe. Such
a thins as a fire in the houses to
keep warm is practically unknown
and houses are built without any
place for a stove or fire except per-
haps. the kitchen llurango has no
fire department and I am told that
nothing in the way of a house burn-
ing has occurred in this city of 60- I
000 inhabitants for a hundred years
anil perhaps longer for no one here
can remember longer than that.
There is no waterworks or sewer-
age system here but there is a street
car system. The street car track
runs along one side of the street '
near the sidewalk and is a narrow
I guage. The cars are pulled by mules
ι one mule to the car. and like every-
1 thing else here has plenty of time
I to make the trips. The driver is arm-
ed with a horn which he blows mak-
ing a hideous sound when he ap-
proaches a crossing street.
Two evenings of each week the
