The captain reported that as he
steamed past Dauphin island on his
way m .Mobile a message was sent him
through the megaphone stating that
there are 300 people on the island
who are suffering for supplies. A re-
lief exf'ilition will be sent to them.
The w ::ona reports that Horn island
lighthouse is totally destroyed and
that the keeper Charles Johnson and
his family lost. This was before the
arrival of the Winona. However the
body of Johnson was found in the
sea ar.d was brought to this city for
burial Nearly every aid to naviga
tion between Mobile and Gulfport has
been destroyed and Round island light
Is the only one on that portion of five
coast which now burns at night. The
quarantine station on Ship island was
damaged to the extent of but
no lives were lost.. Captain Hanks re
potts that there are wrecked vessels
all aloiiLr the east end of Cat Island on
Ship Island on Horn island on Petit
Bols island and Dauphin Island.
