After these ceremonies tlie naval au»
thorities turned lue party over to :
Lieutenant Colonel liaiiey of the Porto
Rico provisional regiment and h's
staff. A lar;e crowd had gathered
outside the naval station having wait-
ed many hours to see Secretary Root
and the houses in the vicinity were
filled with spectators Secretary Root
drove in the executive carriage to the
palace escorted by the regiment. .Mrs 1
Root the secretary's son and daughter
and the higher military authorities ·
came in other carriages. T.ie secre-
tary reviewed the police from the bal-
cony of the palce.
A number of prominent citizens were
awaiting the secretary in Governor
Winthrop's office. After an exchange
of greetings Secretary Root spoke of
the relief work he directed in Porto
Rico as secretary of war after the hur-
ricane of 1899. The talk then turned
to coffee planting.
Referring to the Panamerlcan con-
gress Mr. Root expressed the opinion
that the next congress would be held
in the Argentine Republic and added
that if such a congress were ever held
in American territory Porto Rico would
be the most suitable place.

wife of a Kingfisher county farmer
was fatally injured and her daughter
was seriously hurt by a hao boar
which had broken out of the pen. The
women while the men were in a field

end collision between two (eight
trains on the Western and Atlantic
which Is leased by the Nashville.
Chattagooga and St. Louis railway

lives were lost and four others were
slightly injured. The engineer of the
southbound train failed to take the
switch at Klug's bridge and crashed
Into the northbound train which was

Hancock murderer of Professor Jesse
Troutman. and who figured in a sensn
tional trial for the crime at the last
term of the cidcuit court committed
suicide in his cell in the Escambia
county jail Sunday night by taking an
ounce of carbolic acid.
Hancock made his escape from jail
May i). and had just been recaptured
at Kansas City. Mo. Sheriff Haley re-
turned here with him last Friday. He
I left a note in which he said he was go-
injg where he would receive a just
trial where only the truth was told
and where he would not be tried by the
prejudice of the people.
