THE LONE STAR LUTHERAN
Sideline Slants
By WALTER BALDERACH
This week the major leagues
embarked upon their 60th odd
year of competition. At this junc-
ture I would like to step out on
the limb and make some rather
shaky predictions.
It seems as though Yogi will
have little trouble in his man-
agerial debut. The Yankees are
top-heavy favorites to win their
fifth American League flag in a
row, and their 15th in the last 17
seasons.
In the National League it looks
like the off-season trades have
adequately strengthened the San
Francisco Giants so that they will
win the pennant. Mays, Cepeda,
Me Covey and Marichal will be too
much for the Dodgers this season.
The Houston Colts will surprise
a lot of people this season through
the acquisition of veterans Eddie
Basko and Nellie Fox. At least
they will not be giving up many
inns with that sloppy play up the
middle of last season.
top.
If everyone will get out to the
game and support the ’Dogs things
: could change. A win tonight over
St. Ed’s will throw us right back
into title contention.
Once again back to Kenny
Voges—he seems to be the one
most worthy of talking about this
year—Kenny needs at least 60
times at bat t,o be recognized by
the NAIA. At this point he has
37 times at bat . . . There are
only ten more games. Pitchers
just dc not give him the oppor-
tunity to hit.
‘Dogs Chase Rattlers
in Conference Race
As the season heads down the
homestretch, the Bulldogs face the
difficult task of trying to over-
haul the St. Mary’s Rattlers in
the conference race. The Rattlers
are currently 3-1 in conference
play, while the Bulldogs stand
1-1.
TLC footballers have been ^or the season, the Bulldogs
working out daily under Coach 5re 6-8 with 10 games remaining

terial on hand, Coach Westergard
wants to take full opportunity to
prepare his cagers for the long
season ahead.
TLC’ers can look forward to
some fine track entertainment
coming up in the near future with
the Bulldog Relays and the Big
State Conference meet coming up
soon.
Speaking of jinxs, the Yankees
have never won a pennant in a
year ending with a “4.” So all you
Yankee haters take heart for this
year the whammy is out on the
Yankees.
Along the line of jinxs, it seems
ns though the Bulldogs always
seem to be near the top in con-
ference play, but the Rattlers
somehow manage to come out on
The hurlers have a combined
run average of 3.61. During the
season they have allowed 115 hits
and 49 earned runs.
The defense for the Bulldogs
has been somewhat leaky as they
have allowed the opponents to
score 30 unearned runs. This fact
alone accounts for some of the
close defeats.
Conference play continues to-
night for the ’Dogs as they en-
tertain the St. Edward’s Hilltop-
pers at Fairgrounds Park. Game
time is 7:30. Probable pitcher for
the Bulldogs will be Tommy
Wimp, who went the entire 11
innings last Saturday night to de-
feat Southwestern University.
TLC Clips SWT
Wednesday afternoon the girl’s
tennis team defeated Southwest
Texas State College 3-2. The uut-
come was in doubt until the final
set of the second doubles match.
In the singles matches, Bar-
bara Buck lost to a former TLC
student, Martha Arnecke 6-4, 6-3.
Kathy Graeber defeated Ruby
Hamilton 6-2, 6-0, Ingrid Konig
lost 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles action Connie Gagne
and Kathy Boemer won 6-3, 6-4.
Barbara Buck and Kathy Graeber
decided the match with a 6-4, 3-6,
6-4 victory.-
Today and tomorrow the girls;
will compete in the Texas Inter-
collegiate tournament in Austin.
! The final two matches are slated
! for April 21 and 28 against Tarle-
]don State College.
Participants in the state tour-
| cement this weekend will be
Ingrid Konig in singles, and
Boemer-Gagne and Graeber-Buek
in doubles matches.
Nepers Rip Pirates
The boys tennis team, which I
has been winning a lot more j
matches than predicted, will host
the Saint Edward’s Hilltoppers
Friday afternoon and then Texas
Wesleyan College Saturday.
Last Saturday the Bulldog net- j
tors trimmed the Southwestern |
team by a 6-2 margin, thus aveng-
ing a 5-3 setback handed them
earlier at Georgetown.
The highlight of the day. was
a stirring comeback by Dan Peter-
son, who was down 5-1, and came
back to win 7-5. His victim was
Bill Watts in the deciding-singles
match.
Saint Edward’s is the confer-
ence favorite this year, and beasts
one of its finest teams in history.
It will be the first meeting of the
season for the two teams.
Two weeks ago the Bulldogs
defeated Texas Wesleyan in Fort
Worth, 15-0. The record in con-j
ference play is now 2-1 for TLC.

Rice Stops 'Dogs
For the second time in as many pecking away at Edmund Kuem-
oncounters, the Rice Owls picked ! pel, the Bulldog hurler, did
off the Bulldogs 4-1 last Tuesday Owls manage to attain and
afternoon in Houston. Only after secure a lead.
Golfers Host SWT
Last Thursday the TLC golfers
engaged the Southwest Texas
State Bobcats in San Marcos. The
Bulldogs met defeat by seven
strokes. Low man for TLC was
David Hilsberg with an even par
70. Next in line was D. K. Kunkel
with a 77.
Tuesday afternoon the Bulldogs
defeated Trinity University of
San Antonio. This was the second
victory over Trinity this year for
the Bulldogs.
Tomorrow the Bulldogs will host
the Southwest Texas team in a
return engagement at Stareke
Park. The first meeting between
these two teams was the only-
dual meet which the Bulldogs
have lost.
In the near future the Bulldogs
will encounter all members of
the Big State Conference. TLC will
host the conference on May 2. Tex-
as Wesleyan is the pre-tourna-
ment favorite this year. Lefty
Stackhouse is quite confident that
TLC will make ,a creditible
allowing against these teams.
A sidelight to the golfing issue
at TLC is the fact that two stu-
dents of this school have qualified
for the preliminary rounds for
competition in the Texas Open.
The two lads are Craig Raymond
and John Neese, who will com-
pete for the ten amateur spots
in the open to be reeled off at Oak
Hills Country Club in San Antonio
later this month.
By virtue of hits from Gene
Fleiqing and Joel Tigett, the
Seguin flash, plus an error and
a sacrifice fly, the Owls finally-
scored in the sixth stanza. Usefd^
tut unneeded, insurance tallies in
the seventh and eighth capped the
scoring for the Owls who had
literally bombed the TLC men in
their initial encounter in Seguin.
Although the Bulldogs scored
! initially in the fifth when Billy1
Russell tripled in Ellwood Her-
mansen, who had singled, they
failed to augment their skimpy
lead. After losing it in the sixth,
they were limited to three scat-
tered singles by Owl hurler Wayne.'
McClelland in the closing inning
The story of the game seems
, to lie in the fact that though the
I Bulldogs cut-hit their opponents
9-8, it is obvious that once again
they failed to come up with the
inning as nine Bulldogs were left
stranded on the base paths. >
This disease has plagued them
in several contests thus far, but
j ns the crucial contest with St.
Edward’s is played tonight, the
charges of Buzzy Keller hope to
come alive in pursuit of victor^

If you’re “working your way”, it’s tough — not enough
hours in the day. If someone else is footing the bills,
they cared enough to start saving a long time ago. And
now is the perfect time for you to start saying — for your
own retirement, or to provide a college education for
the children you will have some day. Hates for your
