Cattle Chatter
We had a sale of 509 cattle and
250 hogs at our sale Monday Prices
3E6oked steady to strong with last
week. Prices on good and choice
yearlings and butcher calves sell-
ing !$31 to $35. Medium to, good kinds
$30 to $33, and common butchers
$28 to $31. Butcher cows $22 to $27
and canner sand cutters $15 to $21.
None selling under $15.
(Bulls steady. Heavy bulls $27 to
$30.60, and light weight ones $22 to
$25.
Good quality stocker calves selling
from $31 to $37. None of the good
kind was offered on our market.
Cows and calves selling from $175
to $300, depending on the grade.
Top hogs were selling $19 to $22.-
One group top feeder shoats for
$30.25,.
We had one of the nicest sales
we shave had in weeks.
We understand the rollback OPS
order of April 30, rolls back prices
10 per cent. That’s bad enough, in
itself, but two more reductions are
coming. One is scheduled for 4 1-2
p~r cent August 1 and another of
t 1-2 per cent October 1.
This order is just about the most
ir wbrkable, unfair thing ever dream-
ed' up even in Washington. It’s hurt-
ir? all the way up, from the cattle
powers to the consumers—and it’s
fr'ng to hurt plenty more, both in
F'"rd cash and in other ways, like
co using disrespect for law and order.
Ve’re going to have to do some-
th’ng about this order, and do it
flr'.'ck, or a lot of folks in the catttle
t’-.iness are just going to have to
fi’d some other business or go fish-
in
STRAWBERRIES WITH SUGAR
TOLLEGE STATION — Freeze
ro ne of those lusciuos red . straw-
berries. You can freez some of them
wnolte, others sliced, some crushed,
pu-eed, or made into sparkling
jure.
Meona Cox, foods and nutrition
specialist for the Texas Extension
Service, recommends packing them
in sugar for best results.
•■‘tart with the firm, red-ripe straw-
berries, sort and wash a few at a
fir re, so you can work with them
r"itly. Drain in a colander and then
bull for this saves the juice.
Then, Miss Cox says slice the ber-
ries, sprinkle with sugar, using 3-4
era to 4 cups of sliced berries. To
tw the juice, turn the fruit over
over using a big spoon.
Tack the berries in moisture-vap-
or proof containers, allowing room
to expand in freezing, a half inch
b adspace between the food and lid
rr pint containers, and 1 inch in
qrirt containers. Cover with juice.
Gabel to show the date and that
lb 2 berries are sugared, then freeze
a' zero degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
The bulletin, “Frozen Foods,” is
available in county Ertension agents’
office.
