To Needlecraft Club
The Needlecraft Club met in the
home of Mrs. Fred L. Griffith on
Aug. 20.
After a pleasant hour spent m
hand work and visiting, the club
was called to order by Mrs. Ed
Yates, vice-president. It was voted
by the members present that a
donation be made by the club to
the Emergency Polio Fund Drive
now on.
Refreshments were served by the
hostess, Mrs. Griffith, assisted by
her daughter Mrs. Frank Hadden,

Officers’ Wives Club in Casablanca.

Mrs. Hoppe Visits
With Churchmen
While In Houston
During her recent visit in Hous-
ton, Mrs. M. W. Hoppe and her son
and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Wally Hoppe, had as a dinner guest
a distinguished visitor from Fin-
land. Dr. Aimo Nikolainen, Dr. of
Theology at the University of Hel-
sinki, Finland, which is the largest
University in Finland. Dr. Nikolai-
nen knew friends of Mrs. Hoppe’s
in Finland, and as they both spoke
Finnish they were able to converse
in that language. Dr. Nikolainen
told her of present day conditions
in Finland.
Dr. Nikolainen was one of three
men who are in America to attend
the World Council of Churches in
Evanston, 111., from Aug. 15 to 31,
They were guests of 16 Lutheran
churches of Houston and gave lec-
tures at the Grace Lutheran
Church on conditions of the Lu-
theran Church this side and behind
the Iron Curtain.
The other two men were Dr.
Ernest Kinder, Prof, of Systematic
Theology at the University of Mun-
ster, Westphalia, Germany, and Dr.
Volkmar Herntrich, Prof, of Theo-
logical Seminary at Hamburg, Ger-
many. Dr. Herntrich is a direct
descendant of Martin Luther.
The new members were enter-
tained at brunch on Aug. 13 by
Mary Lou Woolkalis at her Anf^f
Villa.
The patio of the beautiful French
villa in the Anfa district, over-
looking the Atlantic, was set with
individual tables decorated with
red, white and blue centerpieces
and cedar springs. Large beach
umbrellas furnished shade from
the sun and lent color to the set-
ting.
Assisting Mrs. Woolkalis were
Marion Scanlon, Margie Cloaninger,
Martha Simpson, Rosalind Neu-
stein, Creeda Wade, Margaret
Christensen, Virginia White, and
Ann Cordell.
During the gathering, the new
members were welcomed into the
club, and the nominees for office
were presented to the group.

Honors Founder
With Program
At the regular meeting of the
Mercedes Chapter No- 629 O. E. S.
Worthy Matron Margaret Schrank
and Associate Patron Randall At-
teberry presided in the East.
Regular business was transacted.
The program honored Robert Mor-
ris, founder of the order, and was
under the direction of Mrs. Clive
Roe. It featured an interesting
talk given by Clive Roe about the
life of this man.
Also honored were charter mem
bers. The only one present was Mrs.
Mary Stotler, who is the pianist
for the chapter and is an active
member. She was presented a cor-
sage and Mrs. Marian Bryant read
a tribute to her. ,
Guests were present from
Brownsville and La Feria-
Hostesses for refreshments were
Mrs. Hazel Waterman, Mrs. Birdie
McAmis, and Mrs. Norma Smith.
The chapter will have a covered
dish supper at the Charles Sala-
dino home Friday, Aug. 27, honor
ing Robert Morris. All Masons and
Eastern Star families are invited
to come. Each family should bring
its own table service and a covered
dish.

Employees of the First National
Bank held a dinner-dance at the
El Sombrero Saturday night-
The group voluntarily decided to
contribute a small weekly amount
to an employee fund. When the
fund builds up sufficiently, a party
is planned.

To Harold Rogers
In Home Ceremony
Mrs. Audelle Armstrong and Har-
old Rogers were married Monday
afternoon at one o’clock at the
bride’s home, 1110 S. Ohio, with the
Rev. Geo. Wheeler, pastor of the
First Christian Church, Mercedes,
officiating.
The bride wore a beige dress
with accessories of ginger and
tangerine.
The couple’s attendants were the
groom’s son, H. B. Rogers, and
Miss Rosemary Karle.
Following the ceremony, the
couple left for a wedding trip to
New Mexico and Colorado.
Mrs. W- W. Holmes returned
last Friday from the 19th Annual
School of Missions and Christian
Service, Methodist Southwest Tex-
as Conference at Mount Wesley in
Kerrville. Mrs. Holmes is district
secretary of Christian-Social Rela-
tions from the McAllen district.
Zonta Salutes
Two Women
At Rio Farms
MONTE ALTO'— Two members
of the farm and homemaking de-
partment of Rio Farms were guest
speakers to present the program
for members of the Hidalgo Zonta
Club Tuesday night of last week
at Rio Fiirms auditorium:. Ar-
ranged by a third member of the
department, Miss Minnie Mae
Grubbs, who is a member of the
Zonta Club, the program followed
a supper and business program.
L. A. Webb, head of the host
department, presented the com
mentary for a series of colored
slides screened by his assistant, R.
W. Cooper. The slides Illustrated
the scope of the department’s work
with the 103 tenants on Rio Farms
and the general program of experi-
mental work in agricultural prac-
tices conducted by the staff.
Each tenant is allowed to stay
on the farm to which he is assigned
for five years, Webb explained.
This year, 37 tenants will “grad-
uate" and each is purchasing his
own farm. Their replacements
have been chosen from 175 appli-
cants screened by the board of di-
rectors.
Three new members of the Hi-
dalgo Zonta Club were announced
by the president, Miss Ruth Glover
of Edinburg. Two, Mrs. Irene Bar-
ton and Msr. Hazel Hall, both of
McAllen, were introduced. The
third is Mrs George McCullough
of Pharr who will be the first
member to fill the club’s classifi-
cation as homemaker since it was
organized seven years ago.
In another feature of the busi-
ness session, members heard the
official call to the District fall con-
ference, to be held at Albuquer-
que, Oct. 15-17.
Delegates to the conference will
be elected at the September meet,
ing, to be held in Edinburg.

City where they will spend the
week visiting their daughter and
sister, respectively, returning to
Mercedes this weekend. Mrs. Crox-
dale is a teacher in the North
Elementary School here.

Mrs. G. A. Fikes returned home
Sunday from Corpus Christi where
she had been receiving medical
attention. She had also spent some
time with her daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Gene Keyes, while there.

to Mercedes and purchased the
house at 642 S. Ohio. They moved
to Mercedes from Georgia by way
of Kingsville where they spent the
summer. Their daughter, Miss Bet-
ty McKeand, is a senior at A.&I.,
and their son, David, will be a
sophomore there this fall- Mr. Mc-
Keand is the principal of the West
Ward School and Mrs. McKeand
will teach at South Elementary
School.
Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Frazier and
sons of Sacramento, Calif., are
planning to make their home in
Mercedes. Mr. Frazier is the
nephew of Mr. and Mrs. P. J.
Dunn.

last weekend at Edna and Ganado.

nesday to drive to New York where
they will visit with their daughter
and family, Mr. and Mrs. George
Snyder and children, Long Island,
N.Y. They except to be gone for
two months.

drained
1 cup fresh strawberries,
cleaned and sliced (or
1 pkg. frozen strawberries,
well drained)
1 orange, sectioned
% cup heavy cream, whipped
1M cups finely crushed
Sunshine Clover Leaves
lA teaspoon cinnamon
% cup melted butter or
margarine
1% teaspoons plain gelatin
% cup cold water
4 eggs, separated
% cup sugar
1 tablespoon grated
orange rind
Make crust for pie by crushing the Clover Leaves between two layers
of waxed paper with rolling pin. Combine crumbs, cinnamon and melted
butter: toss with fork until well blended. Pack into lightly greased
9-inch pie pan. Chill. Meanwhile, add gelatin to water and set aside.
Put yolks in top of double boiler; stir in % cup sugar, grated orange
rind and orange juice. Cook, stirring over boiling water for 5 minutes,
or until thickened. Stir in gelatin until melted. Remove from heat. Beat
egg whites and salt until peaks are formed when beater is raised.
Slowly add rest of sugar while continuing to beat until stiff. Gently
fold egg whites into hot mixture; let cool until mixture begins to mound
slightly. Then fold in well-drained fruits and pour into chilled crumb
crust. Chill until firm (about 2 hours). To serve, spread top with
whipped cream and garnish with halved strawberries and 2 tablespoons
of crushed wafers, sprinkled around the edge. Makes 6 generous serving*.

there during the summer. They
visited Mr. Thies’ parents, Mr. and

bud, Tex. Mr. Thies also attended
the State Lutheran Teachers Con-
vention in Austin.

The Y.W.A. of he First Baptist
church met recently at the home of

who will undergo surgery in the

Mrs. J. R. Wade, Sr., and grand-
son, Danny Wade, have gone to
Idaho Falls, Idaho, with Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Freasier and family of
Lubbock. Mr. and Mrs. Freasier
plan to make their home in Idaho.
Mrs. Freasier is Mrs. Wade’s
daughter. Mrs. Wade and Danney
plan to fly home Aug. 28.

have returned from a visit in north
Texas and Oklahoma. They visited
Mrs. Phelps’ sister, Mrs. John
Recknagle and family of Marlow,
Okla., and her brother, Lloyd Sam-

The home of Mr. and Mrs. W.
R. Hoover, for many years resi-
dents of Mercedes, was destroyed
recently by fire. The Hoovers now
live in Brownsville.

nicing at the beach Sunday hon-
oring Mr. Haliburton on his birth-
day.
Mrs. Bill Cravener is visiting
her three sisters in San Angelo.
She attended the Wesleyan Service
Guild’s 8th annual weekend in
Kerrville before going on to San
Angelo.
Miss Saraellen Herndon has re-
turned to Houston after spending
a week’s vacation in the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Herndon.
