WHITJEFISH, Monlv Feb. 2L-
< UP.)-‘—The tales of the old and
lurid West, when cattlemen and
rustlers fought their battles on
Montana’s plains, were told at a
meeting here recently by police
chief C. W. Pcwell, pioneer and old-
time cow-puncher. - * , •
Powell recalled the hectic days of
1878, when the cattlemen hired
“invaders" to come into Montana
to clean out the rustlefis. The “in-
vaders’' were paid 25 a day and $50
for every dead rustler. “There were
quite a few dead ones,” Powell
cryptically admitted.
Powell s father, a bull team
freighter, helped drive herds of 38.-
000 from Texas to Miles City, Mont.
