INSIDE OUT
by Larry Nevels
‘Here they come Jim: Looks like
the “I” formation with the wing
this way. Wait, that opposite end is
split out, better take him man for
man, Ray. Jim, you and I will play
inside-outside if they drop straight
back to pass. It’s a possible “fire”
to the left so I’ll take the inside
on a straight drop back and you
take the outside. If all the backs
come this way it’s a “fire” and I’ll
take the inside man, and Jim, you
“fire” and Terry will take the
outside man.
Look, the tail-back just went into
motion to the right; that means
there’s no “fire.” You take the man
in motion, Terry. Jim and I will
play inside-outside over here. Watch
number 85, Jim, he caught the
T.D. pass last quarter. Terry, watch
that tailback for the throw-back
pass. I’ve got the wing back. Jim
stay on number 85, watch him
close, he’s tricky.
There’s the snap. I’ve got MY
man. Oh no, it’s a quarterback
sneak. Oh well, watch for the pass
next time.”
And so it goes, the action in foot-
ball. It seems to be a confusing
waste of time and yet millions jam
the stadiums each year to watch
the game (well, most people watch
the game) and millions of dollars
are spent each year to equip teams
with uniforms and stadiums in
which to meet for battle.
When you win, everyone is happy
and the coach is the smartest man
in the world. When you lose, no
one is happy and the “dumb coach
should have known better than to
send in a pass play when we only
needed six yards for the first
down.”
When you have a winning season
the coach is asked to make count-
less speeches in which he says,
“It was the result of a great team
effort on the part of the entire
team and coaching staff.”
But when it’s a losing season he
might say something like, “It’s not
whether you win or lose that counts
but how you play the game. Foot-
ball is not only a great competitive
sport but it is a great way to make
men.”
So, when you don’t win many
games, that’s the year you build
character! Well, if this is true we
can say one thing for TLC, “We’ve
got lots of character!”

Bulldog cagers. In the two games
played, the ’Dogs went down in
defeat in both. Against Texas Wes-
leyan, the ‘Dogs lost 90-69, and
were out scored by the East Texas
Baptist team to the tune of 20
points, 77-57.
In Fort Worth against the Wes-
leyan Rams, the Dogs were really
hurting for rebounds. Wesleyan
was up in the air all night hauling
them down because of our lack of
height. We were up against a
champion defense the first half,
but this was changed to a tight
man-to-man defense the second half.
Fast breaking coupled with the
switch in defense led to our defeat
Dickie Orsak led the ’Dogs in the
point column with 16 and the over-
all team shooting average was high
with 47 per cent attempted shots
turned into points. Orsak also led
with the most rebounds, 7, but
compared with his performance
last week, this was quite a drop.
Two nights later on Monday in
Denton, our round bailers met a
tough East Texas Baptist team and
folded under. Team shooting was

Lead Intramurals
Intramural volleyball teams have
now seen their second week of
action. In Wednesday night’s play
the men’s teams of Hartman’s
Longjohns defeated the 69’s. The
Hustlers took a loss at the hands
of the Turkeys, and the Drupees
outmaneuvered the Spikers.
In' coed competition, the Motmots
drew a bye and the Sooner’s for-
feited to the Forget It’s. The Kid’s
swept past the Frugies and the
Bandits snuck by the Kutters in
close fought competition.
Men’s Bowling will be held on
Thursday evenings. A bus will leave
from the dorm complex at 5:45.
Bowling will last until approximate-
ly 7:45. A three game series will
be bowled each night. Five teams
are scheduled for competition.

and Hermansen both chipped in with
10 points apiece, but this was not
enough to overcome the Baptists.
Height again cost us some rebounds,
but at the end of the game, the
Denton boys. had only five more
than we.
This coming Saturday the ’Dogs
go to Georgetown to meet South-
western. Last time the two teams
tangled we came out on top, but
only by two points. We will be play-
ing against a good defensive,
hustling ball club and our lack
of “Big Guy” will be our biggest
problem. The three “big, big guys”
we had are out, and they all play-
ed key roles in our earlier victory
over Southwestern.
We have only two more games
left in this year’s schedule. Our
last home game is on February
23, here at Memorial Gym, against-^
St. Edward’s.
Spring Game Cancelled,
Workouts Extended
The spring football game, pre-
viously scheduled for this Saturday,
February 19, has been cancelled,
announced Head Football Coach
Fred Hightower.
Injuries to key personnel was
given as the major reason for can-
cellation of the annual clash. “We
can’t afford too . many more in-
juries,” explained Hightower, “and
with the injuries we now have it
would be practically impossible to
field two evenly matched teams.”
Hightower went on to announce
the extension of spring training for
“two or three more days next
week.” “Rain and cold has limited
training this past week and we
need to eliminate some mistakes
before we check in the equipment.”
Injuries seem to have plagued
the ’Dogs all year and have been
extremely heavy since spring train-
ing began last January 31. The
quarterback position has been left
with only one player able to see
live action. Pat Bailey, a transfer
from San Angelo, has been direct-
ing the offense alone while Arloiv
Kirchner and Wayne Shroeder sit
out scrimmage due to injuries.
Kirchner is nursing a knee injury
he received last season and Shroe-
der is still recovering from a neck
injury he received in action last,
year.
Coach Hightower also released
the 1966 football schedule in which
the ’Dogs will face three new
opponents, all of which are out of
state. Jacksonville, Alabama, Mid-
western College of Iowa, and North-
eastern Oklahoma will replace Sand
Houston State, McMurry, and Uni-
versity of Corpus Christi. The
Homecoming game has been an-
nounced for November 5, against
Midwestern College.
