Attention!
English majors and minors are
invited to attend a dinner honor-
ing the members of the English
faculty, Wednesday, November 18.
The dinner, which is being spon-
sored by the English honor frat-
ernity, Sigma Tau Delta, will be-
gin at 5:30 p.m. in the Little Din-
ing Hall. Those planning to attend
should contact Nora Winkler,
president by campus mail before
Saturday, November 14.
Recital Scheduled
The second Departmental Recit-
al for piano and voice students
will be held Tuesday night, No-
vember 17, at 7:00 p.m. in Wup-
perman Little Theater.
Freshman Grades
Freshmen may pick up their
nine weeks grades from their
Faculty Counselors in their re-
spective offices between Wednes-
day, November 18 and Friday,
November 20.
These grades will be especially
important for freshman women so
that they may calculate their
grade point averages. A 3.0 grade
point average will entitle them to
upperclasswoman status.
Pecan Festival Banquet
As part of the First Guadalupe
County Pecan Festival held by
the Guadalupe County Pecan
Growers, a banquet will be held
tonight at 7:30 in Riebe Dining
Hall. Lt. Gov. Preston Smith will
give an address at the banquet
Sigmas Plan "Sing"
The Sigma Sing is scheduled
for December 4 in Wupperman
Little Theater. It is an all-school
activity sponsored by the Sigma
Tau Sorority, offering opportun-
ity to all cn campus to sing in
groups on a competitive basis.
Singers in groups of two or
more may represent an organiza-
tion, dorm, or any group recogniz-
ed by the TLC administration.
Groups may enter in three cate-
gories: classical, popular, and
folk. A first, second, and third
place prize v/ill be presented in
each category.
The criteria of judging will be
based on presentation and cos-
tumes. The judges will not in-
clude members of the TLC faculty,
as they are expected to enter the
competition.

SIGMAS
The Sigmas served breakfast-in-bed to the girls last Sunday.
Nancy Heiden was in charge of the project.
Plans are being made for the Sigma Sing on Friday, Dec. 4.
All organizations and classes are urged to enter their talent
in this first all-campus sing. In charge of the project are Dusty
Barnes, Sharon Timmerman, Nancy Heiden and Nora Winkler.
GAMMAS
The Gamma Thanksgiving food drive is now underway. Any-
one wishing to contribute food may leave it in the appropriate
boxes in the dorms. Linda Jones is coordinating this project.
Gammas should begin paying their fee for the Sorority
Snowball which will be sponsored by the Intersorority Council
on Dec. 5. Please pay Carolyn Larson.
OMEGAS
The Omegas are participating in intramural basketball at
tlto present time.
Plans are being made for a venison barbecue and dance
on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Bulverde, Texas.

Bischoff Receives
Additional Grant
A $2,000 grant has recently been
awarded to Texas Lutheran Col-
lege by the National Science
Foimdation in Washington, D.C.
for continuation of a project by
Dr. Harry W. Bischoff, associate
professor of biology.
Initiated during this past sum-
mer at the University of Texas
in a program of Research Parti-
cipation for College Teachers, the
project concerns the isolation and
classification of algae found in soil
samples collected from various
southern and eastern states from
Texas to Vermont. New specie for
possible use in basic research are
expected to be found.
Dr. Bischoff is also currently
doing research on spring water
samples from New Braunfels and
San Marcos areas. He previously
had a book, Soil Algae from En-
chanted Rock, published by the
University of Texas.

Five TLC debate teams will
compete against other college
teams in the Southwest Texas
State College speech tournament
December 4 and 5.
Participation in literary events:
prose reading, poetry reading and
literary discussion, is open to in-
terested student. Any TLC stu-
dents who desire to compete in
these areas are asked to contact
Miss Janet James, speech in-
structor.
Teams which will participate in
the four rounds of debate are:
Fred Jandt and Don Kraemer;
Joe Dahl and Pat Boenig; Sharon
Hew Madrigal
Singers Selected
Walter Farrier, director of the
TLC Concert Choir, has announced
the Madrigal Singers for 1964-65.
Singing soprano in the group ore
Dusty Barnes, Jane Reinhart and
Dana Wiltse. Altos are Mary
Dullnig, Faith Kulow, and Joyce
Streic.
Male members are Joe Dahl,
Ralph Falkenberg and Paul Mor-
gan, tenors, and Dan Baumgart-
ner, Earl Hagn and Abbie Linsen-
bardt, basses.
The Madrigals, organized last
year by Farrier, are a special
group that sings “fun” songs
around a dinner table in the style
of old English troubadors. They
perform alone and as a part of
Concert Choir performances.
Weiss Elected
Miss Helen Weiss, teacher edu-
cation instructor at Texas Luther-
an College, has been elected to
serve on the Planning Committee
for the Austin meeting of the
Texas Conference of Teacher Edu-
j cation.
In 1963 Miss Weiss received the
Erect Award for being named
j oustanding alumna of the Univer-
j sity of Texas College of Education.
Miss Weiss was named at the
17th annual conference in Hous-
| ton Nov. 1-2. Others attending i

Gabrielle Luthardt and Stephanie
Lochte; and Frito Bergstrom and
Audni Miller.
TLC teams brought home two
wins from the Texas Christian
University debate tournament last
weekend. Winning debates were
Pat Boeniz and DeLois Garrett
and Gabrielle Luthardt and Dorothy
Bayer. Also competing in the six
round of debate was the team of
Sharon Carveth and Frito Berg-
strom.
The tournament was highly
competitive, matching the talents
of debaters from forty-five
schools in eleven states. The pre-
liminary rounds were six debates
held on Friday afternoon and
Saturday morning, followed by the
final eliminations.
TLC met three teams from
Texas colleges: Baylor University,
Hardin-Simmons University, and
North Texas State University. Out-
of-state teams which they debated
v/ere Dartmouth College, New
Hampshire; Kansas State College,
Kansas State Teachers College,
.and College of Emporia, all of
Kansas; East Central State Col-
lege, Southwestern State College,
Panhandle A&M College, Bethany
Nazarene College, Southeastern
State College, Central State Col-
lege, and Oklahoma City Univer-
sity, all of Oklahoma; and the
University of Illinois in Chicago.
Among other cut-of-state teams
were groups representing the
United States Air Force Academy,
West Point, and schools from Ar-
kansas, Louisiana, Georgia, New
Mexico, and Missouri.
