;■ pear Editor:
On Saturday, January 10, my five
children and 1 had the pleasure of
spending time at your newly reno-
vated park.
;- Upon our arrival, we were greet-
ed by two sweet little boys who told
u,s their names were Shawn, age 5,
and;Aaron, who is in the third grade.
Shawn said his stepdad was play-
ing golf, so I knew he was nearby
and that the boys were not aban-
doned. The boys even shared our
food and drink at their request.
When I started to pack our picnic
things up and told my kids that we
were going to the fishing pier, the
boys asked me if they could ride
along.
I told them that I couldn’t take
them and that they probably needed
to stay where they were in case
Shawn’s stepdad were to come back
fqr them.
We went to the pier and then
drove back thru the park. I saw
Shawn and Aaron had walked to the
lake and had made “new friends”,
with a man and a little boy who were
using a cast net to catch bait.
1 left the park and said a prayer
tor Shawn and Aaron and hoped that
one of the men 1 saw at the end of
the golf course was Shawn’s step-
dad.
It was a beautiful day, the boys
vyere definitely having fun, but I
questioned whether or not they were
entirely safe. Had I been a danger-
ous person, Shawn and Aaron would
have been in serious danger.
1 have been a licensed foster par-
ent for almost 14 years and part of
'me wanted to call the police, but on
the other hand, it was a beautiful day
and they did say that the stepdad
was nearby.
Nearby...but not nearly close
enough to insure the boys’ safety.
Maybe he was watching between his
game, but is this close enough
supervision?
At anytime during my two-hour
stay at the park, had I been that
“dangerous person” that you only
read about, I could have been a long
way down the road with these two
sweet boys.
Cuero, you have a beautiful park,
one to make lots of good memories
With your children, but please don’t
assume that while you’re doing
something else that your children
are safe within the park area. Let’s
not forget Wendy Adams. You can
never supervise your kids too much
when they’re out in a public place.
A concerned visitor,

Dear Editor:
We now know there hasn’t been
any money for quite some time to
work on the Little League Fields.
But why isn’t there any money, we
were told that the Parks Project was
50% completed on September 1,
1997. We had met our goal, said the
Mayor.
So, where is the $500,000 in
matching funds to build the Little
League fields and the swimming
pool?
Well folks, we were lied to. The
only matching funds we have
received totals $189,204.65. As of
January 6, 1998, you, the taxpayers,
have donated $157,971.96.
Cash donations to the city were
$53,503.00, and Parks and Wildlife
has sent us three checks totaling
$189,204.65. So when you total it
all together, it comes ^ut to
$400,679.61.
Out of all this money already
spent we still didn’t have anything
left over to build the Little League
fields.
There has been failure of dlsclo-.
sure to the full Council; a spend,
spend, spend mentality.
The swimming pool has been left
in the Parks Project, not to build it
but to use it as a bank to borrow
from. When we found out there was
no money to build the sports com-
plex we realized what they were up
to. They are going to drop the pool
from the project and knowing that
the Parks and Wildlife will let us pay
back what we used from the pool
money.
This is why a recall is needed.
Our charter says we could have had
a recall election, but a new state law
just came into effect (House Bill
331) which states no election can be
held 30 days before or after a prima-
ry election.
That is why the recall petition
hasn’t been turned in. We will not
waste this petition. It will be handed
in on the following day after filing
deadline for Mayor. It is important
that this is placed on his file, and if
he runs and wins, a recall election
will be called six months and a day
later.
Remember that a charter petition
is completely different from a peti-
tion done at random. In other words,
it doesn’t have to be ratified, just
submitted.
The Mayor said that 43 signa-
tures on the swimming pool petition
were not valid. Well, that still leaves
957 valid signatures. The Mayor
said a lot of children signed this
petition. We said that was true, the
children should have a say in this
issue. But the Mayor doesn’t seem
to think you, the young people,
don’t count.
The Mayor says he spear headed
several programs, never we, the
Council. You see, with the Mayor
it’s never we did, it’s I did'.
He’s doing everything according
to the numbers. He said if the num-
bers would hj*ve l>een right, he
would have run for Congressman a
year ago. So you see, he doesn’t care
about representing you, the people,
he’s only doing enough to glorify
himself.
I don’t know who the Mayor is
going to be after May. We hope he
or she will be a person who brings
all the people to the table through
their leadership.
The Mayor said that the reason
we don’t have a city manager is
because of two members of the
Council. Well, that’s true. Let me
explain.
The person we decided on had
been interviewed twice. He made
two other trips to Cuero, once with
his lady friend. No, he wanted to
come to Cuero. The night we voted
on who we would go with, we had
decided to come out unanimously
behind that person and hold a town
meeting to show full support.
That was the decision. But when
we voted, the Mayor and the Mayor
Pro-Tern voted to abstain, so the
vote was 5 for hiring and 2 against.
When Mr. Blazek saw the vote in the
paper the next day, he came to
Cuero wanting to know why this
vote come out this way.
I spoke to Mr. Blazek in Fort
Worth at a conference in October
1997. We talked about some of the
problems in Cuero, so I asked him to
resubmit an application before the
December 31 deadline. I told him if
he felt I was the problem, I would
submit my resignation the day he
was hired. He looked at me and then
smiled and said, “No, David, you
don’t have to do that I might stay
where 1 am for a while."
The reason why the Mayor and
Mayor Pro-Tern voted the way they
did is that the Mayor was upset the
one he wanted got voted down.
The'Mayor and those he repre-
sents want to go back to the days of
business as usual, where they spend
at will with no one watchdogging.
We would like to thank Cuero
Federal for stepping in and donating
so we could start our first baseball
field.
Billy and 1 will continue to work
on new ways to cut cost of city gov-
ernment and strive to ensure that
taxpayer dollars are being spent
wisely and efficiently.
David L. Ruiz.

Hello, dear friends, this is Gene Cook with words of com-
fort and promise.
Jesus said in St. John 14; 1-3, “Let not your heart be troubled;
ye believe in God, believt also in me. In my father’s house
are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place
for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that
where I am, there ye may be also." V.6. Jesus saith unto him,
I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh to the
Father but by me.
