Presid" nt Truman will greet
twelve outstanding Boy Scouts in
the White House at noon next Tues-
day, Feb. 6 and most Governors will
receive Scouts at state capitals to
mark Boy Scout Week when more
than 2,750,000 members will cele-
brate the organization’s 41st birth-
day.
Observed in every city and town
and most villages and hamlets by
more than 75,000 units, Boy Scout
Week, Feb. 6 to 12; is the largest
single birthday observance by
young Americans.
On Thursday, Feb. 8, the day
that the Boy Scouts of America was
incorporated at Washington, D. C.,
the entire membership will recom-
mit themselves to the Scout Oath or
Promise at 8:15 p.m., in the four
time zones.
Anniversary Theme
‘"Strengthen Liberty” is the an-
niversary theme. The organization
has completed two years of a pro-
gram known as “Strengthen the
Arm of Liberty” which already has
made it possible for four hundred
thousand additional boys to enter
Scouting’s ranks and for all mem-
bers to enjoy a richer experience.
There are now 831 Scout Council
camps totalling 288,545 acres valued
at more than eleven million dollars
in land and eighteen million dollars
in facilities and equipment.
The largest single encampment
ever held in the Western Hmisphere
was the National Jamboree last
summer when 47,163 Scouts and
leaders camped at historic Valley
Forge, Pa. President Truman open-
ed the Jamboree and General Eisen-
hower, a member of the Boy Scouts’
National Excutive Board, spoke at a.
great Fourth of July celebration.
During Boy Scout Week the Jam-
boree campers will hold reunions,
show their films, pictures and me-
mentos and relive their experiences.
The Jamboree, said Walter H.
Annenberg, one of America’s lead-
ing newspaper publishers, was
“a series of unforgettable images of
youth displaying its innate sense of
sportsmanship, comradelines s, inge-
nuity and steady responsibility.”
“There at Valley Forge,” he said,
“we saw the best hope of human free-
ze saw there the power and enth.u~
asm that can shape to its intend-
ed ends. our still imperfectly achiev-
ed democracy.”
