7-11 falls victim to robberies
The Seven-Eleven convenience store on Hughes Road was subject to two night-
time robberies in a two-day span, said a Seven-Eleven manager.
Quinton Fairchild, assistant manager at the Seven-Eleven, said two black men
pulled a gun on a cashier at 3 a.m. on July 23 and demanded money. However,
the cashier was unable to open the safe so the robbers made off with 300 cartons
of cigarettes in place of cash.
The next morning, July 24 at 2 a.m., a Caucasian male ran inside the store
and stole two cases of beer. Fairchild said the man did not use a weapon.
Fairchild said the cashier was able to get the license plate number on both
suspects’ vehicles, and city police are currently investigating.
Judge Jon Lindsay proposes
Commissioners fight for NASA
Commissioners Court, in
a strongly worded resolu-
tion proposed by Judge Jon
Lindsay, has urged Con-
gressional representatives to
fight the recently proposed
transfer of a portion of the
Space Station project from
Clear Lake to Huntsville,
Ala.
“We are going to form a
strong coalition of local of-
ficials and citizens to work
with our representatives in
Washington to fight any
move away from the John-
son Space Center,” Lindsay
said. “We have too much to
offer NASA for them to
even consider a move of
this nature. It would be a
terrible blow to our eco-
nomic development mo-
mentum if we sit back and
let this move take place.”
Judge Lindsay said the
resolution and a letter
would be hand delivered to
the Harris County congress
sional delegation. “We need
to get the strong message
from Harris County across
quickly. A major portion of
our economic development
efforts have centered on the
space industry. In fact, the
Johnson Space Center is
perfectly positioned to be an
attraction to major space
corportations like Grum-
man, Westinghouse and
McDonnell Douglas. Any
move of even a part of the
space station project would
send the wrong signal to the
space industry.”
Lindsay also noted that
Harris County has major
capital improvements
planned for the space center
area that should make it
even more attractive to the
space industry. “We are in-
vesting nearly $17 million in
flood control improvements
along Clear Creek and from
Clear Lake to Galveston
Bay. We have an active
road and thoroughfare con-
struction plan in place.

members are working with
the State to improve NASA

The Elissa
has stolen
her heart
Continued from page 3A
Peters said. But before ever
sailing out, Peters and all
crew members had to un-
dergo intensive training.
The first sail was in 1982.
Walter Rybka, restoration
director, used the Eagle
Seamanship Manual to
teach the crew to sail. Each
year, the crew spends three
months in sail training prior
to sailing. On these week-
ends, the volunteers work
during the hours when they
are not training and Peters
said many of them sleep and
eat on the ship.
Despite the hard hours
spent working on the Elissa,
this is not Peters’ full-time
job. She works at Brown
and Root and must schedule
her time spent on the Elissa
around her paying job. But
her heart is with the Elissa.
“I’d be ready to go tomor-
row if I could get off
work,” she said.
When asked what her
family thinks about her
volunteer work she said,
“they love it.”
“I’ve raised my
daughters that you only live
once and if they want
something then they should
be a part of it,” Peters said.
“Go ahead and try it,
even if you’re not sure your
going to like it. Try it, you
only go around once.”
Although the Elissa is ful-
ly restored, Peters will still
go every Saturday to work
on maintenance. “Next
Saturday I’ll be back work-
ing again—painting, sand-
ing, scraping, whatever is
needed.
“Once you’ve been bitten
by the Elissa, you can’t get
away. You don’t want to
get away,” she said.
