Sterling Stars plan *
to join band in show
THE BAYTOWN SUN
Thursday, Septembers, 1905
S-DD
By CHARISSE CRUNK
The Ross S. Sterling Stars,
headed by director Therese Nor-
ton, are off and running in
preparation for the 1985 football'
season.
This year, Norton hopes to
feature each corp at least once
during the season. The corps
groups consist ef drums,
trumpets, flags and rifles, and
two dance lines — companies A
and B. According to Norton, the
divisions in corps make rehear-
sal easier.
Norton said plans for a com-
bined show with the band are in
the making. She said this will be
the first Star-Band combined
show in many years. It is plann-
ed for the last two games of the
season.
The show should be “very
visually pleasing,” Norton said.
“It will be fun to do as well as to
watch,” she added.
Norton also said that she is
looking forward to working with
the new RSS band director, Den-
nis Eichler.
Flags and rifles will be
featured in several shows. One
drum and flag feature planned is
“Children of Sanchez.” This
1
piece was taken to contest last
year and received a perfect
score. The group placed second
In the state.
Also this season, the Stars will
feature a colorful skirt routine to
“Rhythm of the Night.” They
will also perform a difficult jazz
routine to “Theme from St.
Elsewhere.”
The Stars will feature a drill
using ladders Sometime this
season, Norton said.
Directing the Stars is “a fun
Job and very rewarding,” Nor-
ton said. Arid it is also “a lot of
hard work,” she said, adding
that staying ahead of the kids is
a challenge.
Star officers are responsible
for getting the group into shape.
Norton stresses that strong of-
ficers are a neccessity to help
get a group of such a large
number ready for per-
formances. “Officers can make
my Job easy or difficult,” she
said. “This year’s officers are
making it easy.”
Assisting Norton this year as
assistant director is Debbie
Lochridge. Also, Jim Currin, a
former local Spanish teacher,
often helps Norton by
choreographing various shows.
Other choreographers assist oc-
casionally in developing the
routines of the precision
members of the Stars.
Other songs the Stars plan to
perform Include “Birdland,”
“Easy Lover” and “From a
Chorus Line.”
The 1985 RSS Stars consist of
approximately 250 members,
with about 150 perfr ing.
Freshmen members are the
reserves group, and they prac-
tice in the corp group they are to
become a member of the follow-
ing year. Girls try out for the
Stars as eighth graders. They
try out for the corp they wish to
become a member of, Norton
said.
Every February, the Stars
compete in tiiree categories —
high kick, prop and jazz — with
other drill teams across the
state. In the past, the Stars have
been awarded special merits
which are only given to groups
showing excellence in
choreography and performance.
According to Norton, the Stars
are one of the few groups in the
state that consistently receive
this award.
