Peter Gott,
Tinactin may aid problem
DEAR DR. GOTT - I can’t
get rid of a persistent case of
athlete’s foot. What can you sug-
gest?
DEAR READER - Tinactin
— an over-the-counter, odorless,
colorless substance — may help.
So may myostatin cream. If
these simple measures are inef-
fective, see a dermatologist,
because your problem is In the
major leagues.
DEAR DR. GOTT - Is fasting
harmful? ’ " \
DEAR READER - It’s a
question of degree. A day or two
of fasting here and there will not.
harm you.
Prolonged fasting, however,
can be dangerous. I’m talking
about three days or more. You
will slide into a medical state
called negative nitrogen balance
and will rapidly lose muscle pro-
tein, as well as fat. Your system
will become acid and you may
experience disturbing symp-
toms, including faintness, loss of
concentration and weakness.
You may become dehydrated.
Millions of the world’s poor in-
voluntarily fast each day. They
don’t like it, but they have little
control over food supply.
Short periods of voluntary
fasting may symbolize religious
convictions or — for some people
— may serve as a first step
towards needed weight reduc-
tion. But extended fasts are not
healthy.
DEAR DR. GOTT - I’ve
recently started to lift weights.
Is is advisable to start using
steroids to increase my bulk? I
am a 14-year-old boy, 5 feet 9 and
140 lbs.
DEAR READER — Do not use
steroids. At 14, you haven’t yet
experienced your growth spurt.
Further, your own hormones are
already producing dramatic
changes in your body; the addi-
tion of synthetic steroids may
not only affect your health, but
may seriously alter your growth
pattern.
Until you have reached your
full hormonal potential, in
another two to three years, I ad-
vise you to avoid power lifting,
and the use of really heavy
weights. If you try too much too
soon, you may damage develop-
ing muscles and tendons. Lift for
recreation and definition now,
and leave the bulk for later. Ar-
nold Schwarzenegger was
almost 16 before he was in-
troduced to bodybuilding. At
that age, he was 6 feet tall and
weighed only 150.
One final comment. Weightlif-
ting, when performed properly
Dear Meg .
Obsessive cleanliness sign
of compulsive behavior
DEAR MEG — My boyfriend’s
ex-wife has an obsession about
cleanliness. Their 3-year-old
daughter, Marie, visits us on
weekends. The poor child isn’t
even allowed to get her hands
dirty"! She may play with only
one toy at a time and has toput it
back in its assigned place before
' taking another toy.
I don't discourage her
behavior because I don’t want to
get her in trouble with her
mother. But it’s something to -
see. The child rarely smiles.
The woman had an impact on
Barry, too. Whenever he’s had a
few beers after work, he comes
home and rants and raves about
the house being a mess.
Sometimes after I’ve cleaned, he
cleans the place all over again.
Are super-neatness and
cleanliness hang-ups catching?
- DISTURBED, ELKHART,
IND.
DEAR DISTURBED - Not
really. But compulsive behavior
like Barry's ex’s is a' very
unhealthy way of dealing with
anxiety and stress. Since the
real causes of stress are not ad-
dressed, suchvhabits often get
more bizarre.
Obsessive people set poor ex-
amples for children, who may
unconsciously adopt their
parents’ methods of “coi
Even other adults, like
can be affected, since com-
pulsive people are often drawn
to each other and reinforce each
others’ actions.
DEAR MEG — Our problem is
our 17-year-old son, Sal, and the
family car. He takes it without
permission and stays out until
all hours. We have taken away
his privileges, grounded hipi and
docked his allowance, but he is
so car-crazy he’s willing to pay
the penalty for even one night
out on the town with his buddies.
Sal is a careful driver and has
never had an accident, but we
worry about reckless and drunk
drivers who mighFrun unto him;
We also worry about his lack of
response to discipline. What can
we do to keep him out of the
driver’s seat — SANDRA Y.,
LOS ANGELES, CALIF.
DEAR SANDRA - A car
won’t start without keys. Take
away his set of keys and carry
your keys with you at all times.
When you go to bed, put them
qnder your pillow. The related
discipline problem may solve
itself if Sal can’t get his hands on
the keys.
Write to Meg care of this
newspaper. She will personally
answer only letters that contain
self-addressed, stamped
envelopes. Questions of general
interest will be discussed in
future columns.

Rwy.IMatt.te
at an appropriate pace, is a safe
and healthy activity. You can
develop a nicely proportioned
body, gain strength and improve
your athletic ability.
Bodybuilding is a different
story. It requires commitment
and years of pain and hard work.
Professional bodybuilders and
power lifters may use steroids if
they become seriously involved
in what I call the Muscle Beach
Mystique. But they may
ultimately regret using the
drugs.
I advise you to be patient
about your muscle develop-
ment; devote a lot of thought to
the purpose of your weight train-
ing. Use weight, not drugs, to
achieve your goal. Keep your
physical condition in perspective
— that is, maintain a balance
with the other, equally exciting
assets you will develop as you
grow older.
Send your questions to Dr.
Gott at P.O. Box 91428,
Cleveland, OH 44101. Due to
volume of mail, individual ques-
tions cannot be answered. Ques-
tions of general interest will be
answered in future columns.

HOME COMPUTERS are being put to practical use more and more,
in the wake of the video game boom. New buyers turned to Apple and
IBM, for example, at the expense of game-oriented Commodore —
whose share of the market has fallen.
