PASADENA - The Robert E.
Lee boys track team may have
had the swift legs In their pond —
District 23-5A. But when the
Ganders, along with a con-
tingent from Ross S. Sterling,
jumped up one pond and com-
peted in the Region III 4A-5A
track and field meet at San
Jacinto College Friday, thtey met*
some very swift people.
All told, the Ganders entered
in five events but managed to ad-
vance to Saturday’s finals in just
one — the 400-meter relay.
. For the Rangers, 800-meter
man Allen Wachtel, didn’t sur-
prise anyone by qualifying for
the finals in that event. But
Ranger .strongman Bob
Fontenot lost on his hid to place

The Sterling girls track team
was to compete in. the finals of
the 800-meter relay, but lost on.a
Similar' bid in- the 400. Day two
ful of athletes had to' wait until
Saturday to compete.
Coach Gene Bosse" s Ganders
got more than their-share of.
fifth-place finishes Friday.
Sprinter Steve Celestine took a
fifth in the 100-meter dash. His
time was 11.06. Then Adrian Jr.
Marie, running in place of the.
ailing Chris Crooms, took a fifth
in the 300-meter intermediate
hurdles.
Crooms also dropped .out of the
110-meter high hurdles, but did
run on the Gander relay teams:
The sophomore said his lower
right leg was sore, as well as his
lower back, and could not tajce
the inevitable pounding that
, comes from the hurdles.
Bosse sent two sprinters in the
200-meter dash. Damian
Auguste finished the first heat
fifth in 22.33, and Celestine
managed a sixth in the second
heat. His time was 22.52.
In a tough 1,600-meter relay
field, the Ganders placed a
respectable fifth. State-ranked
Houston Sterling took top honors
in Lee’s heat in a time of.3:14.82.

Wilson belted a Frank DiPino,

the bottom of the eighth inning
Friday night to givejthe Phillies
.a 3-2 victory, their'fifth win in'
their last six games.
“I was really sick all Thurs-
day night and stayed in bed all
day Friday,” Wilson said. ‘‘But
if I’m able to walk, I want to be
in the lineup."
The Phillies trailed 2-1 going
into their half of the inning butt
pinch-hitter John Russell walked
and Wilson, a Channelview
native, unloaded for his third
home run of the year. He now
has 17iRBI, second in the Na-
tional League, and more than
half of his entire 1984 total of 31.
“You have to patient,” he
said. “DiPino spots the ball well.
I was lucky to get around on the
fastball because he has a good
one.” .. .

Lee’s time was 3:18.78.
But the Gander 400-meter
relay team ran to a second-place
41-91 and qualified for the finals.
That foursome was Auguste,
John Hildreth, Celestine -and
Joel Hubbard.
Yet to compete for Lee is Keith
Henry in the discus, Michelle
Richards in the triple, highland
Jong jump and Karen Davis in
the discus. They were to do their
thing Saturday.
“Thly ran well; they just
didn’t qualify,” said. Bosse.
“You have to be a real stud just
to be in some of those races.
Next year I ,)hink well do all
right".” ■- .
Though Wachtel didn’t run
what could be considered a great
time in the prelims, it’s con-
ceivable that he’s saving the
best for the 800 finals. Last year
he was third in the region-in the
800. His prelim time Friday Was
1:57.39. Tracy Brgwster, of
Fontenot competed with pro-
bably the class, of'Texas high
school weightmeh. La Marque’s
•state-ranked Vip. Carpenter took
the regional shot put crown with
a heave M 61-feet, 1%-inches.
That’s a tad offhis best of 63. Se-
cond was Ball’s Billy Sims with
the distance of 58-%‘A. Fontenot
placed fifth, when on his second
throw in the prelims managed a

who’s fourth place throw was 53-

Sterling’s Daryl Jones took a
fifth in her heat of the 100-meter,
dash with, a time of 12.60. She
didn’t qualify for the finals.
Neither did senior Bridgette
Caesar in the 200-meter dash.
Her time was 26.66. ' ,
Sterling’s “ girls' 800-meter
relay team, which is set for the
finals with their fourth place
time of 1;43.83, is James,
Ramona -Caesar, Demetria
Wright ahdBridgette Caesar.
Still scheduled, for actipn
Saturday for the Rangers was
discus thrower Jackie Welborn,,
along with Fontenot in the boys
sector of that event, Nigel Codr-
ington in the long and high jump
and-Stacy„Branch in the high
jump.
A few area teams, especially
the Crosby Cougars, had a fine
first day at the region meet. Roe-
mond Arceneaux had to do
double-duty at' one stage in the
meet, as he worked the high
jump pit as well as the track. His
efforts earned him;the regio:
cfown in Stne high .jump
"Cleared 6-7, as did Bridge City’s
Andrew Hollier, but Arceneaux
cleared it first and was awarded
the first place.
Arceneaux theri qualified for
the finals in the 110-meter high
hurdles with a third place finish
in 14.42. Crosby’s Richard
Dorsey took a strong second in
the 400nneter dash and was to
see championship action Satur-
day. His time was 49.17.
And two Cdugar relay teams
Rushing, Dorsey, Arceneaux ...
. and Jimmy St. Romain finished
third in their heat in 42.78. Then '
that same foursome placed third
in the 1,600'with a time of 3:17.38.
The Cougar girls were also
successful Friday. The 1,600-
meter relay team of Cheri Har-
ris, Yolanda Young, Michelle
Nutting and Loretta Dixon took a •
third in 4:10.00 and qualified for .
the finals. But their 800 relay
Jime of 1:48.82 was only good
enough for a fifth in their heat,
and no qualifying bid. Marlene
Dixon took a fifth in the 100-
meter dash. Her time was 12.86. -V '
Channelview found a spot in
the finals of the girls 400-meter
relay. The foursome of Cyndi
Williams, Trade Parker, Helena
Jones and Kristy Horne placed
fourth in their heat with a time of
51.6. But a fifth in the 80()didn’t
make the qualifying cut.
Liberty’s 1,600-meter rgaly,
behind Bland German’s strong v
anchor leg, placed third in the ' STEVE CELESTINE (right) of the Robert E. Lee
