and Mrs. R. L. Yearwood, Mercedes. While in the Valley they have
visited friends in Edinburg and gone to Monterrey, Mexico. They
plan to return to Abernathy, Texas, their home, this weekend.

The Mary Martha Guild of Im-
manuel Lutheran Church met for
its regular monthly meeting on
Aug. 3, I960, in the Parish Hall.
Mrs. George Erchinger opened
the meeting with the scripture
reading and prayer. She then re-
viewed the book, "Dear And Glor-
ious Physician" by Taylor Cald-i
welL
Mrs. E. A. Twenhafel presided
over the business session when
committees were named for ar-
ranging the fall rally of the Luth-
eran Women's Missionary League,
Valley Zone, to be held in Mer-
cedes on Sept. 25. A donation of
$10 was given to the church air
conditioning fund. Mrs. Christine
Imel presented the Guild with a
party coffee maker.
Hostesses who served refresh-
ments for the social hour were
Mrs. Albert Moser and Mrs. Ida
Schupp.
Guests present were Mrs. N. E.
Newman, Mercedes, and Mrs.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Weyer,
League City, were weekend guests
in the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. E. J. Hauff. They were
accompanied by the Misses Dor-
othy Magee and Kathleen Keller,
Houston.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Layton
and children, San Antonio, have
been visiting with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Andrew ImeL They
are going to Germany to make
their home.
Mrs. P. W. Perkins left Mer-
cedes Monday togoto San Antonio
where she will join relatives for
a vacation trip to Ruidosa, N. M.
R. L. Stem, Weslaco.

Mr. and Mrs. Jack McKinney
and son, Carl Gene, of Irving,
Texas, were recent gue&s of his
sister, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Leon-
ard and family, Mrs. J. H. Mc-
Kinney who had been visiting in
Irving for several weeks returned
home with them.
Mrs. J. Edwin Harvey and son,
Kendall, returned Wednesday
from a ten-day visit in Dallas
and Carter, Okla., and Oklahoma
City. They were accompanied by
their daughter and sister, Terry
Lee, who remained in Oklahoma
City for a visit with her great aunt
and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Harley
Sherman. EnrOute home they
stopped at Seguin, Texas, where
they saw Dr. and Mrs. R. S.
Bettis, former Mercedes residents.
i Mrs. N. A. Gibbs and children,
Terry, Janet and Vicki, Festus,
Mo., have been visiting with her
parents, Mr. -and Mrs. Elmer
Hosea. They were accompanied
to the Valley by Mrs. E. M. Er-
vin, who had been visiting in Ten-
nessee and Missouri for some time.
Guests in the home of Dr. and
Mrs. H. R. Conwell on Sunday,
were Dr. John Robin, Corpus
Christi, and I. Snow, Detroit.

tess for the Aug. 4 meeting of the
First Ladies Aid of Immanuel
Lutheran Church.
The group gave $5 to the air

Mrs. Charles L. Fulton and chil-

Robbie have returned to their
home in Raleigh N. C. after
spending ten days in the home of
Mrs. Fulton's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. A. E. Krause.
Mr. and Mrs. Baldemar Mar*
roquin and children Gloria Aida
and Carmen have returned from a
week's visit with friends in Corpus
and Austin, Texas.
AUXILIARY PICNIC
A picnic supper on the lawn of
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Holmes will
be the regular meeting of the
American Legion Auxiliary on
August 29. Mrs. Holmes will be
installed as president, along with
other officers. Reports will also
be heard from the department
convention.

of Mercedes, announce the en-
gagement of their daughter,
Maria Edilia, to Ramiro Rodri-
guez son of Mrs. Angelita S. Ro-
driguez of Elsa. Miss Edilia is a
graduate of Mercedes High
School. The wedding is planned
for August 14 at Our Lady of
Mercy Catholic Church.

LIFE IN THE SEMI-TROPICAL VALLEY is somewhat different from that near the North Pole, says
Larry Bamum, just home from 18 months service with the Arctic Test Board at Fairbanks, Alaska.
Mr. Bamum and his wife will be honored Thursday evening at a garden reception at the home of his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Bamum. The couple will make their home at 734 Iowa, Mercedes. He
plans to work with his father in operation of H and B Iron Works and also to attend Pan American
College.

Miss Joy Brothers was honored
Saturday, July 6, with a coffee
and shower at the home of Mrs.
Roger Terry. Hostesses were Mes-
dames Terry, Arnold Walker, R.
B. Atteberry, Q, C. Olson and
Billy Frank Barry. The hostesses
presented the honoree with a gift.
Members of the houseparty wore
white rose corsages and the hon-
oree wore a white rose corsage ac-
cented with silver.
Decorations were in the bride-
elect's chosen colors, white and
red. Indian carnation arrange-
ments and apple blossom olean-
der arrangements decorated the
house.
Approximately 40 guests called
between 9:30 and 11 a. m. and
were served from the refreshment
table decorated with an arrange-
ment of red carnations fronted
with two ruffled nylon hearts and
red roses and centered with two
white wedding bells.
Others in the houseparty were
Misses Sandra Puckett, Marlon
Olson, Brenda Brothers, and also
Mesdarrles Elmo Wade, Arthur
Drefke, Wendell Drefke, E. M.
Albright and Henry L. Brothers.
Special guest was Mrs. Jesse
Brothers, mother of the honoree.
Miss Brothers is the bride-elect
of Jack Pierce Denny. The wed-
ding date has been set for Sept.
4, at First Methodist Church,
Mercedes.
Valley Shell Club
Plans Friday Meet
Persons interested in learning
identification of shells collected
in the Valley area may bring
them to the August meeting of
the newly organized Valley club.
Mrs. Betty Allen, of Port Isabel,
has announced the group will meet
Friday at 7:30 p. m. at the Jetties
Cafe.
About fifty attended the July
meeting when members brought
shells they had collected and told
where they were found. These
were listed as the start of the
club's proposed checklist of shells
of the Valley area.
Everyone interested is invited to
the Friday meeting. Attendance
by families is a practice the club
intends to foster, said Mrs. Allen,
who is serving as temporary chair-
man.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bowden,
Winters, Texas, announce the
birth of a daughter, Darlene Mar-
cia, on Aug. 1. Weighing 7 lbs.,
2 oz. at birth, the child is the
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Gene Bowden of Mercedes.
Carlos Martinez, Mercedes, has
announced the engagement and
approaching marriage of his
granddaughter, Estella M. Men-
dez, to David Barrera, Jr., Cor-
pus Christi. Parents of the bride-
groom-elect are Mr. and Mrs.
David Barrera, Corpus Christi.
The wedding will be solemnized
in Our Lady of Mercy Church
in October.
Mrs. A1 Wiesenthal and daugh-
ter, Maxine, Houston, have been
recent guests in the home of her
mother, Mrs. H. P. McNeaL
They also spent a day at Padre
Island.
Mrs. Homer Miracle and daugh-
ter, Marcia, Waco, were recent
guests of relatives and friends here.
Mrs. Miracle is the former Na-
dine Lentz.
Mr.
and Mrs. Lloyd Heggen and
son, Allen, are back home from
a European trip.
Pvt. Enrique Castillo, Jr., has
completed two months basic train-
ing in the infantry at Fort Knox,
Kentucky, and is visiting his par-
ents this week. His next assign-
ment will be at Fort Dix, New
Jersey. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Enrique Castillo, Sr., Mer-
cedes.
