formerly of Mercedes, and Mr, James Quade of Joplin,
Missouri were married in St. John's Lutheran Church of
Chester, Illinois on August 12.
Frances Jo Bryan! Is Wed
To Carl Louis Schuchardt
Frances Jo Bryant, Mer-
cedes, became the bride of
Carl Louis Schuchardt of St.
Louis, Missouri Aug. 4 in
the chapel of the First Pres-
byterian Church at Marys-
ville, Calif. The Rev. Reid
Rutherford officiated at the
double ring ceremony. Back-
ground music from the ad-
joining main sanctuary was
furnished by the church or-
ganist during the entire wed-
ding ceremony.
Parents of the couple are
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. O. Bry-
ant, Mercedes and Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Schuchardt of
9937 Hilltop Dr. St. Louis,
Mo.
The bride chose a
Teachers Attend
Workshop
Mrs. Bill Condon, a
teacher at Travis Ele-
mentary, accompanied by
Mrs. Ruth Yarbrough, a
teacher in the Weslaco
school system, attended a
workshop in teaching at Cor-
pus Christi Aug. 17 and 18.
The workshop, sponsored
by the Economy Company of
Oklahoma City, featured the
teaching of phonic keys to
reading for children in
grades 1 to 4. Approximate-
ly 300 teachers from Corpus
Christi and vicinity attended
the meet.
New Officers
Elected
The Knights of Columbus,
at a recent meeting, elected
new officers for the year
1961-1962. Elected to office
were the following members:
grand knight, Oscar Torrez;
chaplain, Rev. E. Kennedy,
O. M. I.; deputy grand knight,
Santiago Fernandez; finan-
cial secretary, Ramiro Al-
dape; chancellor, Jose Mar-
tinez; warden, Rogelio Eli-
zondo; recorder, Heriberto
Solis; treasurer, Rigoberto
Salinas; avocate, Dolson
Jackson; lecturer, Liborio
Hinojosa; inside guard, Eloy
Garcia; outside guard, Juan
Solis.
Trustees elected were Ra-
fael Verduzco, Anthony
Krueger and Gene O'Shea.
Tom L. Wingert of McAllen
was chosen as district
deputy.
A banquet for the installa-
tion of the above officers will
be held during the latter part
of Sept.

leaves and accented with a
short veil. Her bridal bou-

pearl cluster earrings.
Mrs. Scott C. Hinkle, Jr.
Uba City, Calif., sister of the
bride served as matron of
honor. She wore a pale gold
and white silk sheath dress
and brief self jacket and
matching pale gold band-hat
with a veil. Her corsage was
of white carnations.
Lt. Scott C. Hinkle, Jr.
served as best man.
Following the ceremony
a wedding dinner was given
by the matron of honor and
best mant at the officers
club at Bealle Air Force
Base.
The couple took a wedding
trip to Sacramento, Calif.
The bride is a graduate of
Mercedes High School and
attended Trinity University
in San Antonio and Pan
American College in Edin-
burg. She was employed as
office manager of the Mer-
cedes Community Moter
Hotel Campaign Head-
quarters. The groom is a
graduate of Affton High
School in St. Louis and a
graduate of Florida Southern
College in Lakeland, Florida
and affiliated with Pi Kappa
Alpha Fraternity and Pi
Gamma Mu Honor Frater-
nity. He has been with Wesco
Foods Company as produce
buyer for three years.

SCENE OF TEA
The home of Dr. and Mrs.
M. R. Lawler was the scene
of a tea given in honor of
Janell Baxter, who has been
named Grand Representative
for Texas by the Grand As-
sembly of Texas of the Order
of Rainbow Girls. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
William C. Baxter of Wesla-
co and is past worthy advisor
of the Mercedes Chapter.
In the receiving line were
Miss Rosemary Lawler,
Mrs. W. C. Baxter, mother
advisor of the assembly;
Mrs. Ralph Jones, chairman
of the advisory board; Miss
Pat Bradshaw, worthy ad-
visor of the Mercedes as-
sembly; Mrs. Mae Belle
White, grand visitor; and
the honoree.
Miss Judy Beth Heald and
Miss Dorothy Bohmfalk pre-
sided at the guest register
where the official document
declaring Miss Baxter Texas
representative was on dis-
play.
Party punch and mints
were served with the cake
which was decorated with
the emblem of the rainbow.
The Misses Ernestine Mar-
chant, Elaine Peterson,
Charlotte Barnes and Eileen
Marchant, all past worthy
advisors, served from a
table laid with a cloth of
Italian cutwork.
A crystal candelabra and
vase filled with carnations
and roses and yellow tapers
centered the table.
During the afternoon
members of the assembly
offered various piano selec-
tions as background music.
Other Rainbow Girls of the
Mercedes Assembly also
served in the houseparty.
Floral arrangements of
roses were placed through-
out the home.
Approximately 100 guests
from Valley towns called
during the appointed hours.
Rev. and Mrs. Conrad
Kitchell have been in Fort
Worth visiting Rev.
Kitchell's mother, Mrs. Lou
Kitchell. His mother was
burned when she opened a
steam pipe valve at the Good-
will Industries where she is
supervisor.
Mr. and Mrs. W. B. (Bill)
Stuart, Abilene, Texas are
the parents of a son born
Aug. 17. The infant was
named David Blackwell and
weighed 7 lb. 11 oz. Mater-
nal grandmother is Mrs. H.
D. Stuart, Mercedes.

Feted At Party
Elma, Livy and Hilda Diaz,
daughters of Mr. and Mrs.
Armando Diaz, were feted
with a party in the Mary
Jane Calvillo home Monday,
Aug.J 21 at 9 p.m. Hostesses
for the occassion were Oflia
Galvan, Livia Garcia and
Mary Jane Calvillo.
The three honorees will
soon be moving with their
family to Albuquerque, New
Mexico.
Elma and Livy Diaz have
teachership-scholarships to
teach and study at Highland
College in Las Vegas, New
Mexico. They will be study-
ing for graduate work. Both
girls will teach in the Al-
buquerque school system.
The two sisters are gradu-
ates of the University of
Texas.
