Money Spent In Mercedes
IS EMPHASIZING PROGRESS IN TOWN HISTORY
The El Sombrero Restaurant, one of the most popular eating places in
the Mid-Valley, was founded in the 30*s by Luther McDonald under the name
of The Green Hat. Upon entering service, he sold the restaurant. Other
owners have included Arturo Arredondo and the late O. J. ‘‘Red** Gunn. It
was from the latter that Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Love purchased the business in
1953.
In 1958 they purchased the building.
A major modernization and remodeling program was carried out in
1959 which saw innovations in the exterior, public dining room and private
dining rooms. Chief additions were a connecting arcade from the main en-
trance to the party rooms and istallation of a charcoal broiler.
The El Sombrero is home for three regular service clubs, Rotary,
Lions and Kiwanis, and caters for such other meetings as Chamber of
Commerce and private groups.
Wayne and Margaret Love came to the Valley from Beeville in 1953
where he had operated a restaurant for 9 years. They attended the same
school there.
Mr. Love is a member of the Lions Club, the Quarterback Club, The
Methodist Board, is local Salvation Army chairman, American Cancer
Society committeeman and is a director in the Texas Restaurant Associa-
tion.
As for the future of this area, Mr. Love says that the future of the
Valley is set for an era of progress during the next 15 years—probably
more than any other in the southern part of the nation. Much credit for
recognition of the Valley as a tourist center goes to the good work of the
Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Texas Restaurant Association for the
next several years will join with area chambers to promote tourism.
