electric watch to Mr. George as
a gift from the bank, expressing
his thanks for the many years of
continued service.
Mr. George Joined the bank in
Mercedes as bookkeeper on August
I, 1935, coming here from the
American State Bank in Edinburg.
In August, 1935, he was made
assistant cashier and in April,
1945, he was made cashier; He
was made vice president and
cashier in January, 1952, surd
was elevated to the position of ex-
ecutive vice president in August,
1953, the position he now holds.

Sunday to attend two jurisdic-
tional conferences, in Fayette-
ville, Arkansas, as a delegate
from the McAllen sub- district
Methodist Youth Fellowship.
As citizenship chairman of the
South West Texas Youth Confer-
ence, she will attencf the Jurisdic-
tional meeting of the committee
on Christian social relations Aug.
1 to 4. As President of the sub-
district and conference officer,
she will attend the jurisdictional
workshop of Methodist Youth
Aug. 4 to Aug. 12. She will be
waking with ouths from Texas,
Oklahoma, h ins as, Arkansas,
Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska
and New Mexico.

Miss Virginia Metzger
Virginia Metzger
Completes Institute
Virginia Metzger, daughter of
Mr. andMrs. Hank Metzger, Mer-
cedes, hasrecently completed the
six weeks Astro Science Institute
which was held at the Pah Ameri-
can Observatory and Astro Science
Center, Edinburg. The Institute
was sponsored by the Natl coal Sci-
ence Foundation.
Miss Metzger was chosen for this,
after making application, on the
merits of her grade transcript and
the recommendations of her teach-
ers.
The morning classes covered as-
tronautics, space technology, as-
tronomy and astrophysics. The
afternoons were spent in the col-
lege library. Observation classes
were held almost nightly and the
students made over 50 satellite
sightings besides observing Jupiter,
Saturn, Mars and many deep sky
objects.
The students took a four day trip
to Monterrey, Saltillo and Infier-
nillo Peak, the sight of a new
high altitude observatory. Other
trips included an outing to Padre
Island and visits to Moore and
Harlingen Air Bases, the power
plant at Falcon Dam and the Za-
pata Radar Station.
The 32 students enrolled came
from 12 states including Texas,
Florida, Indiana, New Yak, Ne-
vada, Arizona, Ohio, West Vir-
ginia, Oklahoma, Minnesota and
New Mexico. They stayed at the
Echo Hotel in Edinburg, also scene
of the farewell banquet at the
close of the Institute.

Miss Virginia Holmes, house-
guest of her parents, Mr. andMrs.
W. W. Holmes, was honored on
Wednesday afternoon at a lunch-
eon-card party in the home of
Mrs. Milton Hild. Co-hostesses,
with Mrs. Hild, were Mrs. E. A.
Twenhafel and Mrs. Ned Swamer.
The buffet was centered with a
floral arrangement of single and
double hibiscus that ranged from
dark pink or the outer edges to
lighter pinks and finally to a focal
point in the center of white fran-
gipani. It was framed with green
foliage from the frangipani.
High score Bridge prize was won
by Mrs. Jack Drawe, secondhigh
by Mrs. Cecil Chandler of Heb-
bronville. Mrs. William Kennedy
won high in Canasta.
The guest list included Mesdames
R. P. Edgemon, Feig Wood, Ho-
ward Sparrow, John Bowe, Floyd
Langford, Kent Worley, Charles
Bums, Kennedy, Drawe, Chand-
ler, Holmes, and Miss Holmes,
the honoree.
For several years, Mrs. Hild and
Miss Holmes were members of
the Hebbronville High School Fac-
ulty as instructors of physical ed-
ucation and homemaking.
Elizabeth Lieck
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Heggen and
son, Allen, are expected back in
the Valley this week end following
a six-week tour of Europe, They
left from New York and their trip
included England France, Ger-
many, Switzerland Denmark,
Norway, and the Holy Land.
It was announced that the Eastern
Star'project is to have a rummage
sale on Saturday, Aug. 6. It Will
be held in front of the old Tanker-
sley building north of the tracks.
Little Miss Lieck
Honored With Party
Little Miss Elizabeth Lieck,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
Lieck, Mercedes was honored Sun-
day, July 31, with a birthd<ty
beach party at Padre Island.
A buffet luncheon was served in
the cabanas at the beach. The
birthday cake was decorated in
yellow with rose buds and three
candles and was centered with
a story book doll.
Those attending the celebration
included Mrs. Patsy Jones and
children, Camille, Belle, Forrest
and Barkly, Mr. and Mrs. P. N.
Bazar and daughter, Raynelle, Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Bray and children,
Chrisann and Tommy, Mrs. Ro-
bert Bray, the honored's sister
Edith, all from Mercedes.
Also Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Youn-
ger andson, George, Mr. and Mrs.
George Gainley, Jr., and daugh-
ter, Dawn, Mr. and Mrs. Hoot
Gibson, and Miss Dessie Eptings
all of Edcouch.
Mrs. Eugene J. Havey and sen,
Jimmy, San Antonio* are house-
guests of her mother, Mrs. Polly
Knight, Mercedes, Mrs. Havey
will return to San Antonio August
6. Mrs. Havey is the former Miss
Norma Jean Knight. While here
they will visit friends throughout
the Valley.

Honored With Party
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Bailey were
honored with a watermelon party
on the patio of the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Howard Sparrow, Mer-

future. The party was sponsored by
the young adult class of the First
Methodist Church, of which Mr.
Charles Greenwood is president

Mrs. S. F. Cemosek and chil-

in California. They spent the first
part of their trip with her daugh-

at Monterrey. Later they toured
Disneyland and visited her sister,

Elects New Officers
For Coming Season
The Rio Grande Valley Cotillion
Club elected new officers and
planned several events for its fall
and winter social season at a Tues-
day meeting in the home of Mrs.
George McCullough, Pharr.
New officers are: Ann Ellen Arm-
strong of Mission, president; Su-
zanne Prince of La Feria, vice-
president; and Judy Swann of Wes-
laco* secretary.
New members will be honored at
a get-acquainted tea at the Mc-
Allen Country Club, August 21.
