The principal Ussue changes
(lesions) are found in the ceca
(blind gut) and liver. The extent
of these changes Is subject to
Individual variation. The cecal
lesions are the first to appear,
occurring In one or both of these
pouches, and may be the only
ones found In young (8 to 12
weeks old) poults. The lesions
consist of ulcers In the walls of
the blind gut, or the entire
pouch (cecum) may be enlarged
and filled with a cheesy core.
There Is no practical and ef-
fective treatment for blackhead.
We want to particularly empha-
size that statement because
many poultrymen In their de-
sire for a “blackhead cure” ap-
pear to have misinterpreted a
recent report from Washington
State College on the merits of
phenothlazlne for the control of
blackhekd. We have had numer-
ous letters and Inquiries about
the ‘“phenothlazlne cure,” and
have evep had customers sug-
gest that we Include this drug
in our turkey mashes.
Let’s clear up any misunder-
standing as to the merits of
phenothlazlne in the treatment
of blackhead. Phenothlazlne is
a vermifuge drug i. e. one that
removes certain types of worms
from certain species of animals.
In the Research Report from
Washington State, It was Indi-
cated that phenothlazlne would
remove from 95 percent to 100
percent of the cecal worms from
chickens, but. had no effect on
the round worms or taps worms.
It made' no claims whatever that
phenothlazlne was a cure for
blackhead.
