FAIR AMUSEMENTS
Singing, dancing and music
will be the format for the new
show to open shortly at the
Amphitheatre.
At BFE, Inc., a snack bar
specializes in Belgian-type
waffles or gaufres. The aerial
ride there carries up to 30 pas-
sengers in each of four gondola
cabins to a height of 120 feet for
a 3 to 4 minute birds^eye-view
of the Fair over the Internation-
al Area.
Carrousel Park, the original
Feldman’s Coney Island Car-
rousel is the latest addition to
the F a i r. Completely refur-
bished, this largest and most
famous Carrousel is the Amuse-
ment Area’s family fun spot.
President William Howard Taft,
Diamond Jim Brady and thou-
sands of the young at heart
have ridden the famed ride.
Oriental dishes are served at
Chun King Inn, where glass en-
closed tea houses set in a Chi-
nese garden adjoin several small
lakes. The feature is a 7-course
meal for less than a dollar.
There is John Ringiing North’s
one-ring Continental Circus,
performed under a vinyl plastic
"big top” with a seating capac-
ity of 5.000. A museum tracing
a history of the circus adjoins
(he performance area.
The Dancing Waters display,
with its multi-colored lighting
accompanied by music, presents
limitless formations, from a fire-
works display to classical ballet
scenes.
The Florida Pavilion, removed
from the Federal and States
Area to take advantage of the
water, is a complex of buildings
showing the state’s history and
its current and potential attrac-
tions for living, vacationing, in-
dustrial development and cul-
tural pursuits. Featured are a
100-foot citrus tower, a porpoise
show, two model Florida homes
and a large exhibit hall.
With “Aloha” as its theme,
the Hawaiian Exhibit, which al-
so is set in the Lake-Amusement
Area, extends 300 feet along
Meadow Lake and depict6 Ha-
waii as the Paradise of the Pa-
cific. There is a 40-foot water-
fall, as well as artificial lagoons
and a 600-seat amphitheatre
where Polynesian shows are
staged. Hawaiian specialties are
featured at the Restaurant of
the Five Volcanoes and the La-
va Pit Bar. The pageantry feast
of the Luau is highlighted on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thurs-
days and Sundays.
On the Jaycopter Ride, a cap-
tive helicopter simulates conven-
tional flight, carrying 16 pas-
sengers to a height of 100 feet
by means of a 77-foot boom
mounted on a 25-foot metal tow-
er.
For the nautical-minded, Mar-
oda Enterprises Lake Cruise
provides a 20-minute journey on
Meadow Lake as it passes the
Hawaii and Florida exhibits, the
Santa Maria and more than two
miles of landscaped park area.
The specially designed craft,
each carrying 20 passengers, has
a captain and hostess.
Designed to incorporate the
best features of a scenic ride,
the American Machine and
I Foundry Company’s Monorail
system consists of two parallel,
4,000-foot, closed loops around
(he perimeter of the Amusement
Area. There are six trains of
two air-conditioned cars, with a
capacity of 80 passengers for
each train.
A 700-s eat air-conditioned
building especially constructed
for a puppet theatre is the set-
ting for the new version of “Les
Poupees de Paris,” in which Sid
and Marty Krofft present song
and dance in miniature.
Anchored in Meadow Lake is
the Santa Maria, an authentic
ieplica of Christopher Colum-
bus’ flagship, reached by a 200-
foot enclosed pier. Life aboard
the ship is depicted in a 3-di-
mensional diorama, constructed
by the Scenic Department of the
Barcelona Opera House.
A series of buildings, each
presenting a different phase of
Texas life, make up the Texas
Pavilions, personally sponsored
by Angus G. Wynne, Jr. and
Compass Fair, Inc. A frontier
Palace recaptures the atmos-
phere of the Old West of the
1800’s, and lavish entertainment
is provided in the $4 million,
2,560-seat Texas Music Hall
with the presentation of “To
Broadway With Love,” a spec-
tacular based on 100 years of
American musical comedy.
At Walters International Wax
Museum, motion picture and
television stars are immortalized
in wax. There are also more
than 30 life-sized tableaux
based on famous paintings, his-
torical and contemporary fig-
ures, mythology and religious
events.
VERIFYING A FISH STORY arc Bob Hild and Davldi
Herold wfco accompanied by Wayne Love and Coach M. E.l
Hild caught 75 trout plus many too small to keep. The
fish were still biting when the boys—the last to turn in—
quit fishing. In the bottom picture, Bob and his father,
Coach Hild, are shown with a catch of 46 flounder made
in one evening last week. The Mercedes youngster holds
the “prize catch,*’ a 4 lb. 2 oz. flounder he gigged on
the Arroya.

RIDE-O-RAMA
The Sixth Annual Tip O’
Texas Youth Horse Show
went off very well. With 205
entries the show rolled very
smoothly and fast. We were
home by midnight — which
is good for a show of this
type and size. Of the 150
total points Ride-O-Rama,
Mercedes, won 74, Rio
Roundup, (RR), Edinburg,
won 66, and Big K of Kings-
ville won 10 points. RR Ken-
ny Reger won a silver buck-
le for best all round boy.
There were 11 girls in
the queen contest. Sylvia Pa-
lacios in a turquoise cos-
tume won a third place rib-
bon in this contest and Jo
Ann Jones in a gold cos-
tume won a fifth place rib-
bon. Contestants were judged
on beauty, costume, horse
and riding ability at a walk,
trot, and canter.
Jimmy Reger and Mr. Red
won the senior stake race
in 16.01 in a field of 21.
Lois Herzog and Cimarron
came in second in 16,49.
Jimmy and Mr. Red were
racing for the first time
since Mr, Red injuried his
leg a month ago. In May
they ran this same race in
14.8 seconds. The Jimmy
Reger team also won the
senior pole bending race in
22.44 in a field of 20. Lois
Herzog came in fourth in
23.72. If Mr. Red had not
stumbled at the last pole,
we would probably have had
a new record because Mr.
Red ran this same course
in 21.38 just before he in-
juried his leg. The Jimmy
Reger team came in third
in the senior barrel rac
in 20.34. followed by Lee
Wells and Rocket in 20.38.
In the junior races Steve
Dollery and Tammy won two
races. They won the pole
bending race in a fast 23.30
in a field of 15. Randy Har-
bison came in fifth in 26.
93. The Dollery team won
the barrel race in 20.37
in a field of 19. Ricky Har-
bison came in third in20.82,
and RR Kenny Reger came in
fourth in 21.13. Ricky placed
second in the junior stakes
in 17.04.
RR Kenny Reger won the
children's showmanship in
a field of 19. Kenneth Jones
won a fifth place ribbon.
Twenty eight boys and
girls competed in the wes-
tern working horse con-
test. Usually the horses are
shown at walk, trot, lope,
figure eight, stop and back
up. When pivots on back legs
to right and left were added
at the start of the contest,
there were many disap
pointed people. Each con-
testant is already under
strain when he performs
alone in front of that many
people and he relies upon
his memory for his pattern
of performance. One local
girl who usually places high
in this class failed to hear
her number called out for a
repeat performance and lost
out completely. Pivots are
usually considered a part
