VALLEY FARMS '
CAN BE IMPROVED
WITH TREATMENT
Good Rio Grande Valley
farmland never needs to
“wear out". On the contrary,
it should improve with
proper treatment. A good
conservation cropping sys-
tem is one of the ways of
improving or maintaining the
soil. A conservation crop-
ping system is defined as a
rotation of locally adapted
green manure or cover crops
that give the soil the pro-
tection and improvement it
needs, with those cash crops
that best serve the farm-
er’s immediate needs. Most.
Soil Conservation District
cooperators are using this
method of soil improvement.
One hazard the soil may
need protection from is er-
osion by either wind or wat-
er; another hazard is the
extreme heating and drying
of the soil by the hot sum-
mer sun. By including strip
crops, cover crops, crop
residues and other related
conservation practices in the
rotation, protection may be
provided during the critical
period of the year. The soil j
condition must also be main- i

tamed by the replacement of
organic matter from green
manure crops or crops th&t
leave large amounts of crop
residue on the soil
Another reason for rotat-
ing crops is that the dif-
ferent crops are selective
in the use of soil nutrients
and the deep-rooted crops
utilize the soil to greater
depth and place organic mat-
ter deep in the soil. This is
important in improving the
water absorption and reten-
tion qualities of the soil.
The inclusion of deep-root-
ed crops in the cropping
system is also valuable in
the cropping system; also,
it is valuable in the control
of salinity in the soil since
deep-roots open the soil and
improve internal drainage.
A cropping system is part
of every basic conservation
plan for cropland that is de-
veloped by f armers cooper a-
ing with their local Soil
Conservation Districts with
the assistance of the Soil
Conservation Service tech-
nicians. *
