Local Ag Teachers Participating
In Statewide Education Workshop
Lauro Saldana, Jr., and
James F. Dollery vocational
agriculture teachers in the
Mercedes High School, are
participating in the Statewide
In-Service Education Work-
shop for Teacher of Voca-
tional Agriculture, August 4-
7, according to George Hurt,
State Director of Vocational
Agriculture. The four-day
meeting is being held in
Houston as a part of the pro-
gram in vocational agricul-
ture to further improve the
professional competency of
the state’s teachers.
Vocational agriculture
teachers had the first
general session on Tuesday
morning, with an address by
Dr. Earl L. Butz, Dean of
Agriculture at Purdue Uni-
versity. Dr. Butz has served
in a number of educational
and governmental capacities
and has visited 27 foreign
countries. He spoke on the
subject, “Our Daily Bread.’’
The Thursday morning
general session will have
a presentation by M. A.
Browning, Assistant Com-
missioner for Vocational
Education, Texas Education
Agency. Browning will dis-
cuss the 1963 VocationalEd-
ucation Acts and their im-
plications for vocational
agriculture.
Vocational agriculture
teachers, school adminis-
trators, legislators, news
media personnel and others
wilfer* receive awards and
recognitions at the annual
Awards breakfast on Wed-
nesday morning. The Awards
breakfast is a regular activi-
ty of the Vocational Agricul-
ture Teachers Association.
The State Vocational Agri-
culture Education Staff will
direct workshops, and the
workshops will be staffed by
vocational agriculture
teachers and other special-
ists who especially are well
qualified in their respective
areas. The full day of work-
shops is an important phase
of the training session.
According to Joe L.
Tatum, President of the Vo-
cational Agriculture Teach-
ers Association of Texas,
the organization will conduct
several meetings at times
not in conflict with the work-
shop program. Officers and
board members will be
elected and a program of
work for 1964-65 will be
adopted by the organization.
The ten area supervisors
will work with their teach-
ers in plannning special pro-
grams of interest to their
teachers in their area of
the state. These programs
will be presented in Area
meetings on Tuesday after-
noon and Friday morning.
Plans for district inservice
education programs will be
finalized by teachers dur-
ing these meetings.
Former Resident
Dies in San Angelo
Former long time Mer-
cedes resident, George
Baumgart, died Monday in
San Angelo, where he has
lived with his family since
the Baumgarts moved from
the Valley in the early
1940’s.
Mr. Baumgart, who was
a member of the Baptist
church x while residing in
Mercedes, is survived by his
wife, Dulcie, his daughters,
Mrs. Jack Richert of San
Angelo and Mrs. Perry Hor-
ton of Ranger, and his grand-
children.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Voll-
mer returned recently from
a vacation tour of the Paci-
fic Northwest, Vancouver Is-
land, and Las Vegas, Nev.

Missile Fire Course
Army Pvt. Manuel Balde-
ras, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lucio Balderas, Route 1,
Mercedes, completed a
Nike-Hercules missile fire
control course at Fort Bliss,
Tex., July 31.
During the course Balde-
ras received instruction in
the operation and mainten-
ance of missile tracking
equipment and data compu-
ters.
The 21-year-old soldier
entered the Army in March,
1964, and received basic
training at Fort Polk, La.
He was graduated from
Weslaco High School in 1962.
Betty Kay Pruitt is visit-
ing her grandmother in
Brownwood this week while
her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Billy Pruitt, attend a work-
shop in Austin.
Miss Linda Charlene
Haralson, a teacher in the
Laredo schools, is spending
several days with her grand-
mother, Mrs. C. C. Haral-
son. _
