In a double ring cermony
Miss Maude Marion Olson,
daughter of Mr, and Mrs.
Orrion C. Olson, and Guy
Morris McClendon, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Guy W. Me
Clendon, were united in
marriage at the First Pres-
byterian Church of Mercedes
by Rev. Paul D. Wright of
La Feria on Aug. 24.
The maid of honor was
Miss. Sharron Jean Kelly
and the best man was John
Z. Norris. Ushers were
Truman. T. Olson, brother
of the bride, and Dale L.
McClendon, brother of the
bridegroom,
The bride, given in marri-
age by her father, wore a
street length gown of silk
organza over satin. Delicate
embroidered lace formed a
rounded neckline extending
down the bodice and short
sleeves. Her veil of illusion
was held by a crown of seed
pearls and tiny waxed orange
blossoms. She carried a cas-
cade bouguet of white car-
nations, centered with a
single white orchid.
Mrs. Olson, mother of the
bride, wore a soft cream
silk shantung sheath fashion-
ed with a.three quarter length
sleeve jacket. Her match-
ing accessories were
accented by her corsage of
pink roses.
Mrs. McClendon, mother
of the bridegroom, wore a
sheath of blue silk linen
with white accessories. Her
corsage was of white car-
nations.
Miss Kelley’s gown of blue
silk organza over taffeta was
accented by an empire shirr-
ed cummerbund. She carried
a cascade bouquet of pink
roses and carnations.
A reception was held im-
mediately following the wed-
ding in the home of the
bride's parents. Her table
was laid in pink and skirt-
ed with white net draped
and held by pink rose nose-
gays.
Assisting in the house
party were Mr. and Mrs.
James McQueen and daugh-
ter; Susan, of Donna. Mrs.
William CLHarp, Mrs. Jesse
Brothers, Mrs. Johnny Wil-
liams, Mrs. Joe A. Rickert
and Miss Susan Stout of San
Antonio. Miss Eileen Mar-
chant presided at the bride’s
book.
The couple are graduates
of Mercedes High School.
The bride attended Pan Ame-
rican College summer ses-
sions where she will con-
tinue her studies. The bride-
groom also attended Pan
American College and is now
employed in Weslaco where
the couple will make their
home.
PROGRESSIVE
DINNER HELD
BY CHURCH GROUP
The Young Couples Class
of the First Methodist
Church held a Epicurean
Dinner Saturday, night.
Cocktails were served
Holland style in the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Spar-
row. Spiced tomato juice was
served by waitresses wear-
ing costumes that depicted
the country. The house was
decorated with tulips and
wooden shoes. The onion
soup course was served
French style with waitresses
wearing French maid cos-
tumes at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. George Irby. For
the salad course, served
at the home of Mr. and Mrs
Milton Hild, the guests had
an Italian wop salad with
garlic bread. They ate out-
doors on red-checked table-
cloths decorated with fiesta
candles in wine bottles. A
Chinese meat course came
next at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Sam Johnston. This
time the guest has pepper
steak on rice which was
also served in the yard
decorated with Chinese Lan-
terns. Last in line was the
American favorite, Apple
Pie served at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adam*
Guests proceeded in small
groups from 6:30 to 8:00.
About 60 guests attended.
Proceeds went to the Bo-
livian Chapel Fund.

visited over the week-end
in the home of his mother
Mrs. P. H. Leatherwood, and
sister, Mrs. Bill Day and

K of C To Hold
Formal Dance Here
The Mercedes Knights of
Columbus will hold their
first annual pre-Labor Day
formal dance Sunday night
at the Mercedes Civic Cen-
ter.
Honored guest will be the
supreme director, Mrs. N.
A. Quintanilla of San An-
tonio; Judge and Mrs. Rey-
naldo Garza of Brownsville,
and Hon. and Mrs. Menton
Murray of Harlingen. Other
guests will include Hon. and
Mrs. Kika de la Garza and
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Win-
gert of McAllen.
The Knights of Columbus
have invited some 700 coup-
les to the formal dance.
Furnishing music for the
occasion will be the Leo
Salazar orchestra of Har-
lingen.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert John-
ston entertained for their
foster son, Jens Filtenborg
of Denmark, with a dinner
at Arturo’s followed by a
swimming party at their
home Sunday evening. Guests
included Melody Brooks of
La Feria, Lars Ahlstrand
of Sweden, and the Dr. Bo-
hmfalk family of Weslaco
with whom he is staying.
Miss Brooks spent eight
months as an exchange stu-
dent in Norway in 1961. She
entertained the group with
Norwegian songs.
Mrs. Woody Tulles is go-
ing to leave Saturday for
a visit with her mother,
Mrs. W. D. Brown of Min-
eral, Texas, for the Labor
Day Holiday and then on to
Houston to visit her daugh-
ter, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
Patterson and family.

Paula Duran, Raul Sauceda
Wed In Sunday Ceremony
Miss Paula Duran,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Santiago B. Duran, became
the bride of Raul Sauceda,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Tho-
mas Sauceda of Mercedes
on Aug. 25 at 8 a.m.
The double ring ceremony
at Our Lady Of Mercy Ca-
tholic Church was performed
by Rev. Gerald Fogarty,QMI.
The maid of honor was
Miss Lupita Duran, sister
of the bride. Joe Sauceda,
brother of the bridegroom,
was best man. Bridesmaids
were Miss Rosalinda Cis-
neros, and Miss Dalia Lo-
zano. Ushers were Romeo
Hinojosa of Brownsville, Joe
Sanchez of Mercedes, Clau-
dio Hinojosa Jr. of Mer-
cedes, and Hector Gorena
of Mercedes. Other witness-
es were: first witnesses:
Mr. and Mrs. Eliseo
Sauceda, Sr., aunt and uncle
of the bridegroom/ cushion
bearers: Mr. and Mrs. Gil-
bert Sauceda of Harlingen,
aunt and uncle of the bride-
groom; coinbearers: Mr. and
Mrs. Manuel Nunez of
Brownsville, cousins of the
bridegroom; prayer book and
rosary: Mr. and Mrs. Salome
Romeros of Mercedes, cou-
sins of the bride; lazo bear-
ers: Mr. and Mrs. Genaro
Rodriguez of Mercedes and
Bridal Bouquet: Miss Oralia
Gomez.
The bride given in marri-
age by her father, wore a
floor-length gown of white,
pure satin with a full skirt,
ending in a short, chapel-
length train. .A wide band
of embroidered lace flowed
down the front and back of
the skirt. A white satin rose
was at the back of the waist.
The bodice was also of satin
and lace with a scalloped
neckline and long satin
sleeves that came to a point
over the wrists.
The bride’s headdress was
a small crown of pearl and
crystal beads and a finger-
tip veil of illusion, creating
a bouffant effect with the
unusual bottom veil ending in
a long, cathedral length train.
The bridal bouquet was
made up of white miniature
carnations.
The bride’s mother was
dressed in a beige-colored,
embossed cotton and silk
dress with matching
accessories. She wore a cor-
sage of white carnations. The
bridegroom’s mother wore a
black crepe dress with
matching accessories. She
also wore a corsage of white
carnations.
The maid of honor was
attired in a white satin dress
with a bell-shaped skirt and
fitted bodice with a detach-
able capelet. Her headdress
was a gold-colored satin
pillbox hat with matching
nylon tulle. She wore gold-
colored matching accessor-
ies.
The bridesmaids wore
gold-colored satin dresses
with detachable capelets
identical to the maid of honor.
Their headdresses and
accessories were also iden-
tical to the maid of honor.
The flower girl wore a dress
matching the bridesmaids.
The church was adorned
with arrangements of white
gladiolas, large king astors,
and white carnations. The
side altars held the same
arrangements. Two white
cathedral baskets holding the
same flowers were placed
at each side of the kneeling
rail. White pew markers
made of satin bows centered
with nosegays of carnations,
marked the family pews. A
white aisle cloth from the
back of the church led to
the altar and on each side a
white silk rope was laced
in and out among the pews.
A reception followed the
ceremony at the church par-
ish hall. The bride’s table
was decorated with a floral
centerpiece of white gladi-
olas, white asters and car-
nations. The five tier cake
with rose petals held the
traditional bride and bride-
groom on top.
The t^ble holding the
bride’s guest book held the
bridesmaids’ corsages.
Miss Connie Duran, sister
of the bride, presided.
Others assisting at the re-
ception were Mrs. Alfredo
Lira, Mrs. Jesusa Lopez,
Mrs. David Franco, Mrs.
Maria Gracia, Mrs. Thomas
Sauceda and Mrs. Carmen
Rodriguez.
The bride is a graduate
of Mercedes High School and
has been employed for the
past five years with Valley
Farm Bureau. The bride-
groom is also a graduate of
Mercedes High School. He
received his B.A. degree
in 1961 and his M.A. degree
in 1962 from Highlands Uni-
versity, Las Vegas.
The newlyweds will make
their home in Corcoran, Ca-
lif. where he will be teach-
ing and coaching next year.

Mrs. Markham Hosts
Luncheon Club
The Tuesday Luncheon
Club met in the home of
Mrs. Sara Markham on Fri-
day. Lunch was served and
then guests played bridge.
High score prize went to
Mrs. Shelley Collier and Se-
cond score went to Mrs. Gil-
son Knapp.
Mrs. Markham presented
Mrs. Joe Winston with a
gift as Mrs. Winston is
moving to Uvalde shortly.
Guests present were Mrs.
A. J. Brower, Mrs. Floyd
Langford, Mrs. Clyde Hol-
land, Mrs. J. D. Vollmer,
Mrs. Joe Winston, Mrs. She-
lley Collier, Sr., Mrs. Gil-
son Knapp, and Mrs. Mike
Clifford.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert K.
Johnston arrived Tuesday
from Nashville, Tenn. to
spend the week with their
parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ro-
bert H. Johnston.

Meets Thursday
The American Legion Aux-
iliary met in the home of Mrs.
H.L. Schmalzried for their
August meeting. •

work was read by the pre-
sident, Mrs. Bertha Brown
A past president’s pin was
presented to Mrs. Brown.
The newly elected officers
were installed and are as
follows: President; Mrs

hour with light refreshments
was enjoyed following the
meeting. Mrs. Paul Schrank

ESA CHOOSES
HAWAIIAN THEME
FOR RUSH PARTY
An Hawaiian Luau on Sat-
urday marked the first event
of the fall rush season for
members of Epsilon Psi So-
rority and their guests.
The party was held at
the El Sombrero Restaurant
where an Hawaiian theme
was carried out in the de-
corations and with the cos-
tumes of the members and
their guests.
Dancing, chips, and dips
were enjoyed by all until
12 when breakfast was ser-
ved.
Guests were Mrs. Ina No-
len, Mr. and Mrs. Royce
Norman, and Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Bartholamew of Austin.
The members present
were Mr. and Mrs. Morris
Hogue, Mr. and Mrs. Grady

Three parties were given
this week in honor of Mr.
and Mrs. George Peacock
who are moving to McAl-
len.

Mrs.Curtis Regan entertain-
ed Mr. and Mrs. Peacock at
the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Regan with an ice cream
party and presented the Pea-

Homemakers Class and the
Ruth Class of the First
Baptist Church were Hos-
tesses for a coffee given in
honor of Mrs. Peacock. La-
dies of the First Baptist
Church attended.
Also Sunday night Mr. and
Mrs. Tracy Metcalfe were
hosts in their home for
a going-away party for the
Peacock children, Adonna
and Larry.

Mrs. Haynes
Returns Home
Mrs. Walden Haynes has
just returened from an ex-
tended trip. First she went
to Columbus Mo. to visit
with her mother Mrs. I. C.
Adams and next she went
to San Diego to visit with
her brother, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Adams and family. Her
last stop was in Hawaii
where she visited her daugh-
ter, Lt. and Mrs. Carl E,
Seeger, formerly of Merce-
des, and children Beckie and
Vickie.
While Mrs. Haynes was
there her daughter gave birth
to a son, James Edwin, born
July 31, and weighing 6 lbs.

Baptist Church of Mercedes,
has returned from a Bible
Conference in North Caro-
lina. Rev. Jim Witt of Har-
lingen filled the pulpit in
