The Pan American Student
Forum of the Edcouch-Elsa
High School held its twelth
anniversary prom Feb, 7 at
the Texas National Guard
Armory in Edinburg.
The guests of honor were
parents, school board mem-
bers, administrators and
■ teachers who served as cha-
perones at “El Rancho P.A.
S.F.” '
Vine - covered adobe walls
led the way to the flowered
gates where hostesses
pinned brightly colored
favors on guests who regis-
tered in the guest book.
“Bienvenidos a la Fiesta
Mexicans’’ welcomed all who
entered the ballroom. Soft
lanterns glowed throughout
the evening, spotlighting gay
pinatas, serapes, guitars,
banners, hats, peons, chinas,
and charros.

La Villa 4-H Club
Places At Contest
The La Villa 4-H Club
won two places in the
“Share The Fun Festival*’
held at the Donna High School
Auditorium Saturday night,
They won second place
in the Junior Division in the
Mind Reader Contest. Those
who put on the stunt were
Gilberto Garza, Anne Rodri-
guez, Manuel Silva, Carmen
Peralez, Blenda Keys, Cip-
rlano Rodriguez, Rhonda
Nelms and Juan Garcia, Mrs,
Wllla Dean Kreuger and Mr,
Juan Cisneros, adult leaders
for the 4-H Club, directed
the stunt.
In the Senior Division, the
Villa 4-H Club placed third
on their entry, “The Country
Squares,’* Thisentry was di-
rected by Mrs. Dovie Keas,
also an adult leader for the
4-H Club.

Basketball Team
Names Sweetheart
Beverly~ Shull was named
by the Edcouch Elsa basket-
ball team as their sweetheart
for this year. She was pre-
sented between halftime at
the basketball game between
Donna and Edcouch - Elsaon
the home field Feb. 21.
The three captains, Rod
Moss, Bill Hollon and Bruce
Potter, escorted Beverly on
the field and presented her
with the sweetheart banner
and a bouquet of carnations,
shasta dasies and mums.
Miss Shull is a junior at
E-E High School, is sec-
retary and treasurer of the
National Honor Society and
the Pep Squad, She is on the
Girls basketball team and
wag chosen a class favorite
this year. She is the daughter
of Mr, and Mrs, Art Shull of
Monte Alto.

time in ten years.

Services Held For
La Villa Resident
Funeral services were
held on Feb. 15 at 10:00 a.m.
for Felizs Mireles, 83,
pioneer Valley resident, who
died on Feb. 14 at the Grand-
view Hosiptal in Edinburg,
following a brief illness.
He moved to La Villa with
his wife and son from
Brownsville 50 years ago.
He was a retired farmer.
Rosary services were held
Friday at 8 p.m. in the home
of his son, Inocencia
Mireles, with whom he
resided.
Funeral services were
held at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Elsa with
the Rev, Felix Zola, Q.M.L,
conducting the Mass.
Survivors other than his
son include two brothers,
Temotello Mireles, Santa
Rosa and Santiago Mireles
of Mercedes; ten grandchild-
ren and two great grand-
children.
Pallbearers were Dom-
ingo Villarreal, Inecencio
Mireles Jr., Jose Cisneros,
Jr,, Timotello Fiearceqa,
Martin Hinojosa and Santiago
Hernandez,
Interment was in Tampa-
quas Cemetery near Mer-
cedes.

Mrs, John Rae Bearden of
Mercedes presided at the
guest book which rested on a
table covered with a lace
cloth and centered with a
bud vase holding a coral
colored rosebud.
The refreshment tables
were covered with linen and
Mrs. Younger’s fable was
centered with milk glass
epergn containing coral car-
nations surrounded by white
daisies and greenery. The
white square cake was dec-
orated with coral roses and
green leaves of spun sugar
and was served by Mrs. Rob-
ert Younger, Mrs. Don
Younger served the punch.
On a small table between
the two serving tables was
a tiered wedding cake topped
with a white open Bible in-
scribed with the couple’s
name and wedding date in
jade green spun sugar. Sur-
rounding the bottom layer
was white and coral rose
buds of spun sugar.
The father’s table was
centered with red imperial
roses in a green crystal con-
tainer-. The chocolate cake
was decorated in beige
shades of spun sugar. Mrs.
Gene Rowland of Mercedes
served the cake and Mrs.
Don Anderson of Elsa ser-
ved the coffee.
Potted plants given to the
honored couple decorated the
reception room,
Mrs, F. E. Gibson of Ed-
couch was in charge of the
gift room. Others in the
house party included five
grandchildren, Bobby Youn-
ger of Odessa, Larry and
Sharon Younger of Bay City,
Elizabeth Lieck, Mercedes,
and Sheila Younger of
Odessa,
Other relatives present
were Mrs. Sally Bierman of

Mr. and Mrs. Younger
were married at Hillsboro,
Feb. 16, 1929 and moved to
Brownsville in 1947 then to
Edcouch in 1956, where Mr,
Younger is employed by the
Permian Corp. of La Blanca,
The Youngers are mem-
bers of the First Methodist
Church of Edcouch where
Mrs. Younger is a member
of the Circles of the WSCS.
Roy Strong of Elsa re-
turned to his home after
spending two weeks with his
mother, Mrs. Roy Strong,
Sr., in Alliance, Neb.

AT MONTE ALTO
The Edcouch Order of the
Eastern Star entertained the
Edcouch Masons with a Bar-
becue - steak Supper at the
Rio Farms Auditorium in
Monte Alto Feb, 21. The meal
was served buffet style.
The Washington Birthday
theme was carried out in the
decorations. The buffet table
was centered with a compass
and square surrounded by
cherry blossoms symboliz-
ing Washington as a sur-
veyor. Minature cherry
trees decorated the tables
where guests were seated.
The dessert was cherry and
apple pie.
The worthy matron wel-
comed the guests and Mrs.
Don Linds ley gave the in-
vocation.
Following the supper,
Frank Klopek introduced
Dale Watson, of La Sara,
who gave a magician pro-
gram;
Seventy people were pre-
sent with Mr. and Mrs. J. W.
Moomaw of Center, Mo,, and
Mr. and Mrs. Purl Clark of
Eureka, Calif, as special
guests.
Judging Team
Takes First Place
The Rio Farms 4-H Live-
stock Judging team took first
place at the Willacy County
Livestock Show held at Ly-
ford recently,
Boys on the team were
Kendall and Ronney Bowers,
both of Edcouch, George
Hesse of Monte Alto and
Jerry Imei.
Kenneth Barnes of Wes-
laco coached the team. He
is a former 4-H member of
Rio Farms. The team was
in competition with twenty
other teams and received a
trophy and a banner as their
prize.
Mrs. Graham Hosts
Elsie George Circle
Mrs. I. L. Graham of the
Elsa Presbyterian Church
entertained the Elsie
George Circle at her home
Feb. 19.
Mrs. Joe Keepers led the
Bible lesson on “Songs of
Sorrows" as found in Psalm
44, 74, 79, 80 and 90.
Mrs. Dean Gates, chair-
man, presided over the busi-
ness session. Mrs, Don
Lindsley gave the devotional
which was followed by
prayer.
Mrs. Gus Bunselmeyer
gave the monthly emphasis
on “World Missions." Mrs.
L. R, Moddle gave the re-
port from the general meet-
ing.
The prayer circle meets
every Thursday at 9:30 in
the manse with Mrs. Don
Lindsley as leader.
The hostess served coffee
and cookies to the eleven
members present.
The next circle meeting
will be with Mrs. Joe
Keepers March 18 at 2:00
p.m.

Economist Gives
Club Demonstration
Mrs. Ruth Nesmith of Har-
lingen, economist for Cen-
tral Power and Light was
guest speaker and gave a
demonstration for the Elsa
Civic and Study Club at the
home of Mrs, A, E, Branch
in Elsa,
Mrs. Steve Hood served as
co-hostess,
Mrs. Roy Strong, presi-
dent, presided and was as-
isted in the opening ex-
ercises by Mrs, Deann
Gates.
Mrs. Branch and Mrs. W.
A, Gzaort led the members
in repeating the “Women’s
Creed,"
Mrs. R, E, Snyder, Mrs.
L. R. Moddle and Mrs, Don
Gentry were elected on the
nominating committee to
select the slate of new of-
ficers to be elected at the
next meeting March 10 in the
home of Mrs. Nelle Dietrich.
Mrs. W, H. Hughes will
entertain the club on Feb. 25
when they will meet to make
cancer dressings.
Refreshments were ser-
ved after the meetings from
a lace covered table. The
center arrangment consisted
of red carnations inter-
persed with red hearts, darts
and cupids.

the coffee from a silver
service and Mrs, R, B.
Carter served the punch
from a crystal bowl. Break-
fast cup cakes, candied fruit
slices, pig in the blanket and
banana nut bread were also
served.
Twenty - five members

Tripp of Elsa attended the
South Texas Presbyterian
Convention at Bay City last
week. They also visited their
son and daughter - in - law,
Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Tripp
and sons of Tivoli.

became the bride of Thomas
Wayne Wilkins of McAllen in
a ceremony at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Giese of Elsa on Feb.
22 at 8:00 p.m. The bride-
groom is the son of Mrs.
Kenneth Wilkins and the late
Mr. Wilkins of McAllen,
The couple repreated their
vows before an improvised
altar of white alabaster
mums and white stock, flank-
ed at each side by potted
fern and cathedral candela-
bras which held seven lighted
tapers. White satin ribbons
formed an asile across the
sun porch and ended In large
bows at the living room
doors.
The Rev. Leo Tripp, pas-
tor of the First Presbyterian
Church of Elsa, officiated in
the double-ring ceremony.

The bride, given in mar-
riage by her father, wore a
sheath dress of white

by a pearlized crown.
She carried a bouquet of
feathered carnations cen-
tered with a white orchid.

The Central Elementary
School principal, Harry
Haeffner, is in charge of the
Interscholastic League Con-
test to be held in La Feria
Feb. 29 for the Elementary
and Junior High Division in
volleyball and the Junior
High tennis division.
There will be six other
schools in competition in-
cluding La Feria, Donna,
Roma, La Joya, Los Fres-
nos and Lyford.
Mrs. R, H. Guinn of Ed-
couch left for Refugio Friday
to meet her son and
daughter - in - law, Mr.
and Mrs. Claude Guinn and
children of Houston. Their
grandchildren, Johnny and
Jody, will accompany Mrs.
Guinn back to Edcouch
where they will visit their
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
R. H. Guinn.
A/3C Fred Ullrich, son of
Mr, and Mrs. Pat Ullrich of
Elsa, is home on an 18 day
leave from Sheppard Air
Force Base at Wichita Falls.
Fred is an air craft mechanic
and will join the Eleventh
Air Refueling Squadron when
they go to their new base at
Dover, Del., following his
leave.
Mr. and Mrs. Art Tutman
of Flint, Mich., who were
formerly connected with the
Delta Sales Yard, visited
Mr. and Mrs, M. C, Cowan
last week. They are vac-
ationing in the Valley.
Those attending the Valley
District FFA banquet held in
the Echo Hotel Feb. 23 in-
cluded the Cover Girl nom-
inee for the Edcouch Elsa
chapter, Carolyn Sue Tur-
berville and the Blue Jean
Queen candidate, Barbara
Malone. Others present were
King Moss, Jamie Foerster,
James Carlson, Jerry
Keepers and the sponsor,
J ohn Stewart.

She wore a street length
dress of baby blue peau de
soie. Her shoes were dyed
to match. A head band of
matching material held a
short veil. She carried a cas-
cading bouquet of white pom
poms.
The best man was Mike
McConkey of Dallas.
For her daughter's wed-
ding, Mrs. Giese chose a
sheath dress of apple
blossom pink Irish linen. The
bridegroom’s mother wore a
dress of silver-white knit.
Her accessories were of
white velvet. Both mothers
wore chrysanthemum cor-
sages.
Geri Giese, sister of the
bride, presided at the bride’s
book which was located on
the sun porch. The table
holding the book, was
covered with a white linen
cloth. Centered on the table
was a bridal doll and a
crystal candelabra with one
white lighted taper.
The house party members
all wore white chrysan-
themum corsages. Miss
Carolyn Foerster was in
charge of the gift room. Miss
Gill Giese, sister of the
bride, distributed the satin
net rice bags from enameled
baskets intersperced with
lillies - of - the - valley.
The refreshment table was
covered in white and held a
silver and crystal epergn
which held an arrangement
of white stock and white
alabaster mums. Candel-
abras with lighted tapers
flanked the center arrange-
ment.
The three tiered wedding
cake was trimmed in white
and pale blue roses of sugar
spun, and was topped with a
minature bridal couple under
an archway. White tulle was
at the base of the cake.
Mrs. L. R. Moddle, aunt
of the bride, served the cake.
Miss Mary Anne Shull served
the punch. Coffee was served
by Mrs. A. Y. Baker, Jr,
to 80 relatives and close
friends of the couple.

included Mr. and Mrs. C. E.
Bryan of Mercedes, grand-
parents of the bride, Mr.
and Mrs. H. G. George of
Mercedes, and Mrs. Frank
Narro of McAllen.

where the couple will make
their home, Mrs. Wilkins

graduated from McAllen
High School. Both attended
Pan American College at Ed-
inburg. The bridegroom will
enter law school at Baylor
University at Waco on Feb.

in Edinburg; and a luncheon
in the home of Mrs. Karl
C, Boy sen of Edinburg.
