Tested Rules
For Planting,
Storing Bulbs
To plant new bulbs, follow three
easy steps:
First, use a spade, trowel or
bulb planter to dig a hole a few
inches deeper than you intend to
plant your bulb. Throw the ex-
eavated soil into an old dish pan
or onto a board.
Second, add the soil condition-
ing mineral vermiculite to the
earth you’ve removed, Horticul-
tural grade vermiculite, available
in garden stores as Terra-Lite, is
porous and absorbent, aerating
the soil while providing a reser-
voir for moisture. A proper mix
is two parts soil to one part ver-
miculite. Now refill the hole to
, the desired planting depth with
the mixture.
Third, plant the bulbs at the
depth best suited to each variety.
After planting, fill the hole with
the remainder of the soil-vermic-
ulite blend,
The following chart tells the
number of inches of soil that
should cover various Spring
blooming bulbs, as well as the
number of inches apart each bulb
should be planted:
Bulb Covering Space
Crocus 3" 3”
Grape Hyacinth 3" 3"
Scilla 4" 3"
Tulip 6" 6”
Hyacinth Q" 6"
Narcissus 6" 6"
In the North, the ground cover-
ing the bulbs may require mulch-
ing to protect against alternate
freezing and thawing cycles, The
excellent insulating qualities of a
two to three inch layer of Terra-
Lite vermiculite make it a widely
used mulch.
Bulbs that have to be dug and
stored include Dahlias, Cannas,
Caladiums, and Tuberous Be-
gonias, Most bulbs should be dug
after the first killing frost, al-
though Dahlias can be left in the
ground several days after the
tops have died,
Horticultural vermiculite is also
an effective medium for bulb stor-
age—it maintains moisture bal-
ance so bulbs won’t dry or rot.
Simply pour a layer of vermicu-
lite in the bottom of a cardboard
carton, place down the bulbs, and
pour in more vermiculite to form
another layer,
Before storage, Dahlia roots
should be removed from the
ground — after the stalks have
been cut within two or three
inches—and dried upside down
for a week, Caladium bulbs should
be cleaned and then dried for two
weeks in a cool place. Store at
50 to GO degrees.
Cut the blackened tops of Canna
bulbs back a few inches to a foot.
Allow the tubers to 'dry for sev-
eral hours before storing in a cool,
dry place, After Tuberous Begon-
- ias are dug out, lay in a sunny,
airy place. As the soil dries, it
can be shaken off the plant, When
the foliage has parted and the
tubers are clean, store at 40 to
50 degrees,
If any bulbs are injured during
removal, sprinkle the cut surface
with sulphur. Cheek the bulbs
once or twice during the Winter,
If too dry, sprinkle the vermicu-
lite with water, If too damp,
driefly air out in a dry place,
PERMANENT SOIL
CONDITIONER
One part vermiculite mixed
with two parts soil will give
sufficient substance to sandy
soils to enable them to hold
water, while clay and hard-
packed soils thus mixed are
loosened and aerated. Only a
one-season effort, vermiculite,
once in the soil, has the ad-
vantage of being a perma-
nent conditioner.
