Anniversary
East Hidalgo Zontians
marked the tertth anni-
versary of the chartering of
the club Thursday evening
with a dinner meeting at
Harold’s Country Kitchen,
Donna. Among the guests
was Mrs. MyrlZlmmerman,
McAllen, Zonta Club of West
Hidalgo, who was president
of her club at the time the
East Hidalgo Zonta Clubwas
chartered. Mrs. Zimmer-
man retires this fall as Gov-
ernor of District X/a post
she has held the past two
years.
Mrs. E,A. DeJong, Merce-
des, a past president, was
also present, as were char-
ter members, Mesdames
Jim Louise Menton and
Grace Johnston, Mercedes;
Sarah Weaver, Donna; Em-
ma Coats, Weslaco. Mrs.
DeJong is also a charter
member. Charter members
not present were Mrs. Jerry
Dentler and Dr. Ruth Mc-
Charen, both of Weslaco. Dr.
McCharen is also a past
president.
Perfect attendance awards
for the past year were pre-
sented to Mrs. Menton, Mrs.
Letha MacVean, and Miss
Amelia Adame. Mrs. Menton
received a placque in special
recognition of ten years of
perfect attendance, the only
member to receive the
honor.
Rev. and Mrs. David Paul,
Mercedes, showed slides of
their recent trip to England
and Scotland. The Pauls, with
their three young sons, spent
several weeks there in the
late summer. Both pointed
out special points of interest
as the slides were shown.
In addition to members
and the district governor,
guests were present from the
Zonta Club of West Hidalgo
and the Zonta Club of Har-
lingen. Mrs. Chita Shearer,
Weslaco, a former member,
was among the guests.

The American Legion
Auxiliary will meet Monday
in the home of Mrs. W. W.
Holmes. A report on the
Department Convention,
which was held in San An-
tonio, will be given by Mrs.
Holmes who was the elected
delegate to the convention.
Mrs. W, F, Polfus, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. W, W,
Holmes, arrived Monday,
Sept. 14 for a short visit,
Mrs. Polfus will leave Fri-
day to join her husband in
Orange, Texas, before re-
turning to their home in
Philadelphia, Pa.
Travis PTA To Meet
Tonight At 7:30
There will be a meeting of
the PTA at the Travis Ele-
mentary School, Thursday,
Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
The theme for the year is
“Together We Help a Child.”
The theme for the first meet-
ing is “Improving Our Work-
ing Partnership." The pro-
gram will be presented by
Genaro Rodriguez who will
tell of the Migrant School for
Mercedes.
There will be visitation in
the school rooms after the
program which will provide
an opportunity for the par-
ents and teachers to become
better acquainted. Coffee
will be served._'

Wedding Vows
Exchanged Here
Miss Mary Susan Reeves
became the bride of Xavier
Lionel Guerra Sept. 11 at
8:15 p.m. in a double ring
ceremony at Our Lady of
Mercy Catholic Church,
Mercedes, with Rev. Gerald
Fogarty, O.M.I., officiating.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. W.F, Reeves,
Mercedes, and the bride-
groom, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ignacio Guerra of Mer-
cedes.
The bride was given in
marriage by her father. She
wore a dress of white organ-
*dy with white lace trim and
a three-quarter length
sleeved jacket. She carried
a white prayer book.
The bride’s brother, Har-
old Ray Reeves, served as
best man and her sister,
Ruth Ann Reeves, was maid
of honor.
Following the wedding a
reception was held in the
home of the bride. After a
wedding trip to San Antonio
the couple will return to
Mercedes where they will
reside.
Out of town guests at the
wedding were: Mrs. J.L.
Gallardo and Margaret Can-
trell of Harlingen; Mrs. Opal
Watson, San Antonio, an aunt
of the bride; and Mr. and
Mrs. L.E. Reeves and family
from Monte Alto, a brother.

Baptist Women Hold
Season Of Prayer
Program At Church
The Woman’s Missionary
Society met Tuesday morn-
ing at nine in the First
Baptist Church for the sea-
son of prayer program. Nine
members attended this
meeting.
Mrs, Connie Reagan was
in charge of the program
which was opened by singing
“Open My Eyes”. The topic
of the program included the
Latin American Scholarship
Program. The Valley Bap-
tist Academy and the Mexi-
can Baptist Bible Institute,
A prayer was offered for
each branch of this Baptist
Missionary work, Mrs. W.H.
Drawe is in charge of the
prayer calendar and gave a
special prayer for all mis-
sionaires having birthdays
this week.
The meeting was closed by
the reading of a poem titled
“Awareness” presented by
Mrs. Joyce Nolen.
Mrs. Deyo Hosts
Saturday Bridge Club
The Saturday Afternoon
Bridge Club met at the home
of Mrs. J. C. Deyo last
week.
The following members
were present: Mrs. Leon
Clarke, Mrs. Lamar Park,
Mrs. Dennie Denman, Mrs.
Paul Shotwell, Mrs. O. J.
Schaeffer and Mrs. H. L.
Erie. Mrs. Fred Bernard
of Weslaco was a guest.
Mrs. E. W, Archer mother
of the hostess, joined the
ladies for refreshments. The
high prize was won by Mrs.
Schaeffer and the cut prize
was won by Mrs. Park.

Miss Martinez Weds Mr. Flores
In Our Lady Of Mercy Church
At seven thirty Sunday
morning, Sept. 13, in Our
Lady of Mercy Catholic
Church, Mercedes, Miss
Aurora Martinez, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs, Lucio R.
Almanza, Mercedes, became
the bride of Esmeregildo
Flores, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gil G. Flores, Mercedes.
The Rev. Gerald Fogarty,
O.M.I. officiated at the wed-
ding ceremony.
Vows were exchanged be-
fore an altar decorated with
two arrangements of white
gladioli and two baskets of
white galdioli were used
at the entrance of the church
rail. White satin bows mark-
ed the family pews.
Miss Aurora Reyna sang
the Ave Maria and Panis
Angelius.
The bride, given in mar-
riage by her brother, Isiaro
Martinez, wore a formal
gown of white silk organza
over taffeta. The gown had
a bell shaped skirt, fitted
bodice and long sleeves. The
entire front of the dress had
scattered irredescent se-
quins and seed pearls, with a
detachable chapel train that
snapped at the shoulder. Her
bouffant veil of silk illusion
held her crown of orange
blossoms and had a lace
edge. She carried a cascad-
ing bouquet of white roses
with white ribbon stream-
ers.
Miss Dahlia Lozano ser-
ved as maid of honor. She
wore a dusty pink straight
dress with an overskirt that
featured a bow at the front.
Her headdress was a small
crown made of the same
material as the dress and
trimmed with pink sequins
and tulle. She wore dyed-to-
match shoes and carried a
dusty pink mum bouquet.
"Bridesmaids were Miss
Lupita Luna, Miss Emma
Acosta, Miss Elvia Reyna
and Miss Mary Mata. Their
dresses were of the same
design as the maid of honor
except the color was tur-
quoise and they carried tur-
quoise mums in their bou-
quets.
Reynaldo Flores, broth-
er of the groom, served as
best man. The ushers were
Xavier Guerra from Mer-
cedes and Gilbert Cantu, Ed-
inburg.
The reception was held
at the Community Building.
The bride’s table was de-
corated with a white lace
table cloth centered with a
big wedding bell. Mrs. Ma-
cario Marques served the
cake, while Miss Rosa Al-
manza poured the chocolate.
Members of the houseparty
were Mr. and Mrs. Arturo
B, Martinez, primeros pa-
drinos; Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie
Gonzales, de conjines; Mr.
and Mrs. Ben Soto, de lazo,
Miss Lupita Lozano, de libro
y rosario, Miss Mary Lou
Gonzales, de bouquet and
Miss Fina Yanez, de arras.
The bride attended Mer-
cedes High School and for-
merly worked at Queen City
Pharmacy. The groom at-
tended Mercedes High
School. He is in the U. S.
Army, stationed at Ft.
Bragg, N. C, He was for-
merly employed by General
Telephone Co., Weslaco.
For traveling the bride
chose a three piece suit in
brown with matching acces-
sories. She wore a white
corsage. The couple will re-
side in North Carolina where
the groom is serving in the
U, S. Army at Ft. Bragg.
Duplicate Bridge
Club Holds Meet
The Duplicate Bridge Club
met Friday in the home of
Mrs. S. H. Collier.
Attending the meeting
were Mrs. J. D. Vollmer,
Mrs. Harold Stuart, Mrs.
Adrian Brower of Mercedes,
Ms. Charles Graham, Mrs.
C. F. Keister, Mrs. E. L.
Snyder, Mrs. Claude Denson,
Mrs. John Mitchell and Mrs.
Irma Robinson of La Feria.
Attending as guests were
Mrs. Gilson Knapp and Mrs.
