of Jesus Galvan of Mercedes
in the Faith American Lu-
theran church of Weslaco

bridegroom's mother wore
a navy blue dress with pink
accessories. The two grand-
mothers, Mrs. Luceta Cantu
of Mercedes and Mrs. Baz-
ilia Gonzalez, wore white
corsages.
The wedding reception fol-
lowed in the Parish Hall with
the wedding party and the
couples parents receiving
the guests. Miss Beatrice
Cantu presided at the guest
book and registered the
guests. The bride's table
was covered in white and held
the three tiered wedding cake
decorated with yellow sugar
supin roses, topped with a
bride and groom and white
wedding bells. Mrs, Raul Or-
tega of Brownsville served
the cake and Miss Anita Can-
tu poured the punch. Mrs.
Adolph Flores of Pharr
poured coffee from a silver
service.
Mrs, Galvan chose a brown
knitted sheath dress with
beige accessoreies for her
wedding trip to Wichita, Kan-
sas. She wore a white rose
corsage taken from her bri-
dal bouquet to complete the
ensemble.
The bride is a graduate
of Edinburg high school and
the bride groom is a gradu-
ate of Mercedes high school.
They are both employed at
the United Fruit and Food
Corporation at La Blanca.
They will make their home
in Mercedes.

at Harold's Country Kitch-
en the evening of Sept. 9
for dinner and installation
of officers. The Officers for
1964-65 are La Petiti Chap-
eau, Lorene Tullis; La Demi

ation gifts were exchanged

Epsilon Phi Chapter of
Delta Kappa Gamma held
its first meeting on Sept.
12, 9;00 A,M. at Harold's
Country Kitchen in Donna.
Serving as hostesses for the
breakfast were Mrs. Eileen
Matthews Mrs. Lela Turner,
Mrs. Lorraine Allen, and
Miss Jimmie Vickers.
A report on membership
was given by Mrs. Barbara
Montgomery and Miss Hazel
Frerking presented infor-
mation concerning scholar-
ships. The topic of the pro-
gram was “How can we in-
sure that young people build
worthwhile values and atti-
tudes to prepare as mem-
bers of an adjustable
society”. Mrs. Gertie Nap-
per, program chairman in-
troduced Mrs. Mary Young,
Donna High school coun-
selor, conducted a sym-
posium consisting of six
Donna High School students,
who, expressing their own
view on the subject, gave
information to indicate that
young people are , adapting
themselves for the leader-
ship of tomorrow.
Mrs. Hazel Lyons, presi-
dent, presided.
Attending the meeting
from Mercedes were
Goldsby Goza, Mildred Hal-
com, Polly Haynes, Mary
Lawhon, Willie Miller, Mary
Frances Stokes, Loretta
Temple, Hazel Lyons, Ray
Trousdale, Mary Wallace,
Alma Whatley, Lucille Bar-
ton and Elsie Bailey.
The members of Beta Sig-
ma Phi and their husbands
started the club year with
a hamburger cookout at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. L.
C. Powers, recently, Erwin
Twenhafei and Ned Swarner
were chefs for the evening.
The menu consisted of ham-
burgers with all the trim-
mings, baked beans, iced
tea and cake.
The Powers’ patio was
set up with picnic tables and
cards tables to seat the
following members and hus-
bands: Mr. and Mrs. Vic
Morava, Mr. and Mrs.
Emmett Albright, Mr. and
Mrs. Bill Green, Mr. and
Mrs. A. H. Downing, Jr.,
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kloep-
ping, Mr. and Mrs. Ted

Mr. and Mrs. Steve Galla-
way have returned after
visiting Mrs, Gallaway’s
sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Joel
Clark of Dallas and Mr.
and Mrs. H. A. Hott of Eu-
less. After leaving there they
visited their son, Walter
Gallaway in Austin, who is
attending Texas University
then returned through Kings-
ville and visited Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Johnson before
The Rev. Irvin S. Briese,
pastor of the Elsa Lutheran
church, officiated at the
double ring ceremony. The
couple repeated their vows
before an altar illuminated
by four brass wrought iron
candleabras, each holding
seven cathedral lighted
tapers. The central arrange-
ment featured cathedral bas-
kets of white gladioli and
pom pom. The family pews
were designated by white
satin bows centered with
white wedding bells. Mrs.
Jarvis Thormahlen of Wes-
laco played the traditional
wedding music.
The bride, given in mar-
riage by her father, wore a
wedding gown of white taffeta
and Chantilly lace. The
bodice lace over taffeta was
fashioned along princess
lines with a scalloped Sa-
brina neckline and long lace
sleeves tapering to the wrist.
The bouffant skirt of taffe-
ta was complimented with the
matching lace at knee length
and formed a chapel train
in the back. The lace in
front was topped with a

Hears Camp Report;
Plans To Attend Meet
The Dorcas Aid Society
held their meeting Thursday.
Mrs. Donley Westfall pre-
sided during the meeting
which was opened by singing
the hymn “Take My Life
and Let It Be.'* Mrs. H. E,
Vogel presented the topic
“Total Committment to
Christ.” Ernest Garcia gave
a report on the Lutheran
Service Volunteer School
which he attended at the
Walther League Camp at La
Grange, Texas.
It was announced that the
Lutheran Woman’s Missi-
onary League and the Luth-
eran Laymens League will
have a combined rally Sept.
27 in Harlingen at St. Paul's!
Lutheran Church and that
a subscription to “This Day”
magazine was given to the
Good Samaritan Home. The
nominating committee was
appointed.

MR, AND MRS. BARR KERN EWING are shown following
their recent exchange of wedding vows in Oklahoma City.
She is the former Miss Mary Louise McElyea, daughter
of Mrs. A. E. Henderson of Oklahoma City and the late,
James P. McElyea of Mercedes. He is the son of Mr.|
and Mrs. Barr Ewing of Mercedes and the grandson of I
Mrs. William Ewing and Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Kern, all
of Mercedes. The newlywed couple are making their home
at 1630 North Oregon, Apt. 1, El Paso.
Michael Ewing, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Barr Ewing left
last Friday to spend the
weekend with Mr. and Mrs.
Kern Ewing in El Paso. Af-
ter visiting there he will
leave for Lubbock to attend
Texas Tech as a freshman
this year,
Mr. and Mrs. Crockett
Murray and their daughter,
Donna, spent the weekend and
Labor Day at Killeen, Texas.
They visited their son, Sgt.
and Mrs. Joe Murray and
family on Sunday. They were
guests at a special family
dinned at the Club House and
met some of the Sgt. and
Mrs. Murray’s friends.

tained 'her bridge club last
Thursday afternoon with a
luncheon. Members attend-
ing were Mrs. M. A. Mum-

Charles Sherrill and Mrs.
Newell Waters of Weslaco
and Mrs. Floyd Langford of
Mercedes. Guests present
were Mrs. Hill Cocke and

Mrs. Gordon Keithley of Mc-
Allen, Mrs. Bill Van Ber-
gen, Weslaco, Mrs. George

the lavender theme was
carried throughout the
house. High prize was won
by Mrs. Langford and Mrs,
Malone won second high;
Mrs. Kyte, guest prize; and

Mr. and Mrs. V.J. Mor-
ava and son, Jack, enter-
tained several Rice Univer-
sity students at a barbecue,
Friday night.
Guests, Clarence Wilker-

be third year students at
Rice. Larry Tankersley of
Mercedes will be a fresh-
