FRONT COVER
Launched on 20 August 1977, a decade ago, the Voyager 2
spacecraft is depicted, two years hence, as looking back
upon Neptune and its moon Triton, seven hours after its
closest approach to the distant planet on 24 August
1989. Voyager 2, which has already encountered Jupiter,
Saturn, and Uranus, will make very close approaches to
both Neptune and Triton, then head toward the edge of
the solar system, which it may reach around 1990.
Critical to the success of Voyager 2's mission is the
onboard spacecraft recorder, designed and built by the
Lockheed Electronics Company. It is still performing
flawlessly after a ten-year, two-billion-mile journey. The
Voyager Project is managed by the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory for NASA.
